A gigantic version of that swingset-clubhouse combo you bought at Costco only to rot in your backyard because spiders and rain made it so unpleasant for kids that they refuse to use it. It's that creepy clubhouse times 30! It's pretty much a regular playground with most kids swarming the swings and other play features with a few venturing into the old wood play structure. They go in once and don't go back in again. My son was cursed at by older boys (who appeared beyond the age guidelines and I was surprised to see them still interested in a playground), and banged his head when inside the dark dank structure there was suddenly an unmarked (unlit) drastic change in ceiling height. Needless to say this experience was a turn off. It was fun to see friends and we enjoyed the togetherness of the play date but unless I'm in the area and desperate for a kid distraction, I won't be back.

If you want your small children to nap, then have them walk up the steps to the slides a dozen times. There is a nice variety of playground equipment for all ages including swings, a 3 person seesaw, spinning/ climbing thing, etc. All the equipment has a castle theme which is super cute. I love that the entire playground is fenced in with fences high enough that young kids definitely cannot get over. The fencing around the steps/ platforms for the slides is also super safe to prevent falls. I feel totally comfortable letting my kids walk up and slide down by themselves while I wait at the bottom. Bathrooms nearby are better than most playgrounds. The only downside is that there isn't a lot of shade. Some benches are shaded but none of the playground equipment is shaded so you feel like you're baking on a hot day. There are covered benches at the entrance of the playground for parents. But your kids will have so much fun that they'll barely notice how hot they are.

Welkinweir is an Old English word that translates to "where sky meets water." The property is 197 acres with a 55-acre arboretum. The house is a c.1940 Fridtjof Tobiessen Colonial Revival creation, that encompasses prior historic c.1830 and c.1750 structures. The estate has been open to the public since 2000, and has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 2001. Everett George Rodebaugh (b1902), a 1922 UPenn alum, founded a court-reporting service in Philadelphia that boosted him to national prominence. The Rodebaughs had no children and traveled the world, but unlike the heavy Euro influence adopted by the DuPont estates in nearby Brandywine Valley, Welkinweir has remained true to its plein air, Weyethesque look. I was recently at Stoneleigh, where I expected William Powell to walk out of the house with a smoking jacket and a G&T. Welkinweir felt more like Spencer Tracy's hunting spot, if he ever had one. Welkinweir is located on Prizer road, a picturesque street of swank multi-mil horse farms, with a winery (Stone Barn Cellars) at the Pottstown Pike end. You head up the drive and around a hairpin turn, you are upon the house, so much so, you might hit it! Drive past the house, and parking will appear. A patio leads you to an info center on the exterior wall, with an abundance of brochures. Use the trail map to walk yourself around the hiking options on the property. Yes, this is a hike, so dress in sneaks or boots and comfortable clothing. There are various trail options, but we did the simple loop around the huge pond, and then explored the grounds by the house, and Pinetum in front of the house. We did about 3mi on the pedometer. We'd have loved to stay longer, but with dogs and a baby in the cold, 3miles was a comfortable stopping point. You could easily make this an all-day hiking destination. They have a large picnic shelter, with a nearby firepit area for warmer weather. There are also port-a-potties near the picnic area. House tours are normally available only to groups when set up in advance, but if you call to request it, they can sometimes accommodate smaller parties. According to what I've read, the house contains a rare pipe organ, letters and private documents of the Rodebaughs, and the DL on when they got robbed of a $250k silver set by one of their own house guests! As indicated, dogs are allowed on the trails and in the arboretum. They do need to be leashed and cleaned up after, of course. I am so happy to have found Welkinweir! I am fortunate to have so many cultural resources at my fingertips, locally, but I wish Welkinweir were closer because it has such a great vibe, and has been so lovingly tended and well thought-out, with the amenities of a state park, in addition to the museum garden thing going on. There is a lot of large equipment, but not a whole lot of variety or imagination in the different interactive functions. Reeves Park's playground (Phoenixville), Smith Memorial Playground (Fairmount Park), Freedom Playground (Haverford), and Aston Twp's new playground all have really imaginitive stuff, and just as large of an expanse (if not larger). I also have to give props to the Reeves Park and Freedom playgrounds for being fenced in (Smith is, but it's so big, the fence is not as containing as it could be). Kids Dream is not fenced, unfortunately, because it is a layer of safety I always appreciate, for young kids who run, and also just to keep out wandering dogs (the ones on a long leash whose caretakers aren't paying attention) or to dissuade sketchy people from hanging around (sorry but they're everywhere). There is a nearby walking trail, and it's also adjacent to township offices (shared parking lot). I do have to comment that there was a bit of litter generally around, which is never okay for a kids' playground. Also, this playground is pretty crowded. Parents seemed adequately considerate, but honestly, all the abovementioned playgrounds had a better vibe to me. Maybe because this place was built up by my recommendation and the reviews, but it wasn't as great as my expectations (and comparative experiences).

We did most of the trails in under an hour and found this beautiful overlook. There was another bench below. Checked the map and back in the truck and on to the main entrance on county Park road which is about opposite of st. Peter road. You'll pass the remains of the Knauer barn on the left and soon arrive at the the park entrance also on the left. Plenty of parking, playground and office. Found the trail. This one was a little muddy. Found the other bench in about 15 minutes. Looking forward to returning and exploring more of this very historic area. Get the map. It is very helpful.

We camped at French Creek State Park for Easter weekend (3 nights, 4 days), and overall it was a…read morereally solid trip with one pretty noticeable downside. We stayed in Loop C, where our group has camped for the past few years. The sites themselves are decent some a little tighter than others, but generally well maintained. Each spot has a partial paved pad for the camper, a gravel area with a fire ring, and a picnic table. It's wooded, quiet, and has that classic PA campground feel. There's plenty to do here... hiking trails, a lake for canoeing, disc golf, a playground, and a large pool (closed during our stay but opens Memorial Day weekend). The campground was actually pretty full for Easter weekend, which says a lot about how popular it is. Park rangers are definitely present and take rules seriously (especially bikes without helmets or lights), which is great for safety. But... the bathhouse situation needs attention. For a loop with around 40 sites including tents, campers, yurts, and cabins-- there were only 2 showers and 2 restrooms. On top of that, cleanliness and upkeep just weren't where they should be for a state park. That was honestly the biggest letdown of the trip. We also had some rough weather, but that's camping... you roll with it. Overall, it's a beautiful park with a lot to offer, and we'll likely be back. Just hoping the bathhouse situation gets some upgrades, because that's the one thing holding it back from being a really great campground.
