"Sweetheart" grove of Jeffrey trees (probably the 8th wonder of the world!)
    Sydney R.

We pulled up here just as they reopened and were greeted by the amazing camp host, David. We scored an amazing spot (#17) and even got a personalized tour of the campsite by David and his trusty four legged sidekick, Takota. We had initially hoped to stay at the Big Pine Creek campground, and we are so glad that we ended up here instead. Quiet, clean bathrooms, and beautiful views. If David is there when you stay, ask him to show you the "sweetheart grove"!

My boyfriend and I stayed at Sage Flat Campground the week before it closed for the season in October. The leaves were all a stunning yellow. The creek/river runs right behind the sites but it wasn't too loud. It's only about a mile to the trailhead for Big Pine Lakes which was perfect for us. There is potable water during the camping season, firewood for sale, bear lock boxes, and clean pit toilets. Glacier Lodge is also right up the rode and they have a small market (not sure their hours though; they weren't open when we were there during the week this time). All the other campers were quiet and respectful. I've got to say that the camp host David M. was so awesome. He makes sure every site had water to put out their fires (because inevitably there is some knucklehead that doesn't). He introduced himself and his dog Caleb to us and made sure we had everything we needed. He even had a fun little trivia game for a prize! We were SO impressed; we've never had such a thoughtful camp host before. We would definitely recommend it

If you forgot anything, there is a market by Glacier Lodge a mile up the road selling the essentials (and apparently, BBQ on Saturdays).

I come here every year, usually in June or mid-August to hike the Big Pine Lakes trail. This year,…read morethe only reservation I could get was for April. We stayed over the weekend and it was absolutely freezing!!! Driving up, you could already see the mountains covered in snow and I knew right away we were in trouble! It got down to 21 degrees! I had double gloves, double layers, double everything and I still couldn't feel my fingers!!! Lol. I was so glad I brought my snow cleats because they helped a lot since the trails were covered in snow! For safety reasons, we decided to only hike up to Lake 2. The usual beautiful turquoise blue lakes were nowhere to be found and instead replaced with a half frozen lake. It was still a cool sight to see and I'm grateful I got to experience it at least once in my life because I swear, I will never stay here again in April! No way! Hahhaha. I definitely would not recommend camping here that time of year unless you have an RV or are really prepared for winter conditions. We were a big group which made the experience a lot more fun. I love this campground and there's a reason it's so hard to book. It's truly beautiful up there. If you're lucky enough to snag a reservation, definitely check it out.

I was not acclimated and it made my hike unexpectedly grueling. It's an absolutely beautiful hike, and I wish I was less focused on simply breathing! The entirety of the campground is surprisingly fancy as campgrounds go. Lots of manicured public spaces. But the store always seemed closed which probably had something to do with the government shutdown happening at the time. Directional signage within the campground (to specific site numbers and to the trailhead) is pretty awful and I wasted a decent amount of time trying to find my site. I got up pretty early to hit the trail (just as the sun rose), and had to use AllTrails to point me to the trailhead. In early Oct, it can get pretty cold up there so setting up camp at 4:30pm wasn't ideal. Try to get there earlier bc it cools down really fast. My specific site (26) was really private and very nice. It looked just like the pictures on Recreation dot gov. It sits beside a bubbling little stream, yet mosquitoes were never an issue. It was also the most level and tidiest tent pad I've ever had the pleasure of sleeping on. There was a major drop-off between the car pull-in and the campsite, so I had to be extra vigilant about not breaking my neck during the frequent back and forth loading and unloading.

Clean: Each site had a picnic bench, bear box, and fire pit. Our site was clean and ready to use. The outhouses were cleaned regularly which was awesome and much appreciated. The road to get around the campground is tighter but definitely doable. Quiet: The sites are fairly close to each other without much privacy but that is to be expected given the landscape. With that said, people were extremely respectful so you really didn't feel like you were in a campground. Location: this is the major win of this site. It was close to Lone Pine if you want to explore the town, close to the Alabama Hills and movie road, and at higher elevation and on the road to Mt Whitney. Gorgeous views of the mountains. Shade was hit or miss - some sites had trees others didn't so be prepared with a shade structure if needed. Overall awesome experience- would camp here again!

There are 43 campsites (28 sites reservable), my friend and I was able to walk-on and have our pick at available campsites for roughly between $20-$30/night, tent camping. There are some campsites with adequate shade (not all) and located along the Lone Pine Creek -YES! running fresh, cool water! I totally forgot to make note of what sites are best, but my friend and I pitched our tent at #37 -which gave us a BEAUTIFUL view of Mt Whitney. Two cars are able to park per campsite and some sites have water faucets. Decent restrooms -smells a bit, but always stocked with the super thin toilet paper. Camp host is a super nice guy -friendly. Helped another friend of mine park/position her camper. I stayed here in the beginning of August 2020 and was already warm weather at 8AM, hot around lunch time till sunset. Pretty decent sized bear cannister/box for your use at each campsite for no additional cost.

The views were so gorgeous that we did make a few stops. We parked in front of the Visitor Center and went on the Discovery Trail. It took us an hour to complete. We started on the right side of the loop, and I was just gasping for air. We saw the beautiful Bristlecone trees on the trail. As we continued on to the left side of the loop, we had to walk on the big red rocks. That part was not enjoyable at all as we had to be careful not to trip. However, the views were so wonderful. It's a clear trail, so there is no getting lost.

It's already a little slushy near the Schulman Visitor center, but beyond that, it's deeper, messier, and just not possible without an offroading vehicle. And even that might be a little dicey. So you might make it as far as the visitor center until it snows again, but it is now closed for the winter. A few other things to note: the elevation will make you THIRSTY. Bring more water than you normally would. And a hat/sunscreen, because the sun is more intense up here! Lastly, it takes a little *more* than an hour to get as far as the visitor center but is absolutely worth the drive!

No notice was provided prior to arriving and it was clear that this was a big job planned well in advance...helicopter used for lifts and a dozen trucks and 2 cranes. Power was out from 7 am to 8 pm. Had we had notice we would have brought a generator but with full hookups we don't do that. At check in nothing was said. The day the power was turned off, We realized all the camp water was supplied by pumps and was not tied to the back up generator, so we're were out of water and again with full hookups we expected water. No water means no dishes, no toilets, no washing hands, etc. Had they said on arrival water and electric was planned to be out, please fill your holding tanks the day before, this all could have been avoided. Upon communicating with the owners it was said "it was posed on the outside door"...so I looked at it, and it only said power would be out. Nothing about the water and there are a lot of things on the windows and doors. I would have expedited that to be shared upon check in and the runs down of the park setup and rules. Great camp and has been for 45 years or more. Poor planning and communication from the owners and staff.

However, given that it was Labor Day weekend and we managed to snag a spot on a walk-in basis, we were pretty pleased. You can only stay one night without a reservation. We paid around $45 for that night ($35 for the night and an extra $10 for an additional car, if I remember correctly). This campground is decent, but it's not that deep-in-the-woods, nature-immersed kind of vibe, if that's what you're after. The campsites are tightly packed together, lots of RVs lined up in a row - it can get a bit crowded and noisy. It's more like an RV park than a wilderness retreat. There are reasonably clean bathrooms, and you can grab a $2 token for a 7-minute shower. There's a fish cleaning station, and while the little river nearby had a bit of trash, it is cool to fall asleep to the sound of the stream. Big shoutout to Pam, who I believe is one of the campground managers. She's a real sweetheart, super helpful, and even went above and beyond outside of regular business hours.
