However, the actual cause of the problem was never clearly identified because most of the visit was spent trying to upsell us on additional services or a new unit. I was repeatedly told that the unit was old, poorly maintained, and that the best option was to replace it. The first repair estimate was around **$6,000** for a compressor replacement. Later, I was offered another option for about **$900** to replace the start capacitor and relay, along with a coil cleaning. We declined both repairs and simply paid **$224** for the service call. Afterward, I drove to Home Depot, bought a replacement start capacitor for about **$20**, and installed it myself in roughly **15 minutes**. The AC unit started working again. Will the unit fail again soon? Probably--it is old. But for now, it works. Could an experienced technician have identified and repaired this particular issue quickly instead of focusing on selling a replacement? In my opinion, yes. Decide for yourself whether you want to call Aire for **repairs**. Based on my experience, the emphasis seemed to be on selling a new system rather than diagnosing and repairing the existing one.

They also completely refused to itemize the invoice for the elderly couple. Shop around. I know Melton's had a good name in Clinton, but they were bought out by somebody else and not owned by the original owner anymore. Their blatant overcharge and lack of transparency is very concerning, especially in dealing with an elderly couple. My suspicion is that they refuse to itemize invoices to hide their upcharges, including the maintenance agreement that is included in the "one price". And, just as shady, they never gave them a written estimate of work. I saw another review on here about them doing that and the company replied that they'd fix that, but apparently never did. When I called and politely asked the owner to explain the excessive cost, he became belligerent and threatened me with a lawyer and was too embarrassed to tell me how much the new unit cost. But they weren't too embarrassed to tell my elderly friends that their new Goodman/Amana unit is just as good as the Trane that they were replacing. And watch out for their $150 Comfort yearly inspections, which somehow managed to miss the problems in their old unit last year while it was still under warranty. Bottom line: my friends trusted this company and got ripped off so bad the owner refused to explain the charges. Additionally, despite what Melton's website says, Trane told me that Melton's is not an authorized Trane dealer. Do your homework on this company before using them. One of the things you can count on is that they don't try to upsale when you have a repair issue. If the problem can be corrected with a $20 part plus the service call, then that's exactly what is offered, and the repair sticks. We decided to replace the unit along with the duct work, and they are finishing up this morning. Dusty and Anthony have done a superior job. They have been prompt, professional, courteous and polite. They were patient and willing to answer any questions that I had - and I asked quite a few, lol. This is what you get with every person that works there.
