If you have driven down the east coast you have seen South of the Boarder. Powell's advertises the same way. Miles before you get there the signs and billboards tell you to stop for produce. We saw them while southbound and decided to stop while northbound. There is nothing fresh or locally grown about Powell's. I posted some pictures of the store bought stickers on their produce. AND it's marked up higher than you favorite local grocery store. 5.99 for a dozen ears of dried out corn on the cob? That's outrageous. I didn't know who the worker bees were, no greeting, some people out back chatting it up. Took my pics and left. read more

My family has been stopping at this spot every year for a least five years to stock up on fruit/veggies for our week vacation. I was always under the impression that the produce was farm fresh/home grown (maybe my ignorance). Stopped today and saw workers unloading plastic containers from groceries stores putting in cute little produce boxes like it was something more than imported fruit. I'm serious...grapes, cherries, and all forms of berries. If you are expecting farm raised produce save your time. We will not be back. read more

Well I've stopped here for well over 25 years and it finally occurred to me "why do I stop here?" Why is because I'm always excited for my vacation and produce hunting is part of the journey. Somehow I feel like it's a trap though as you pull up and see bountiful baskets of fresh fruit and vegetables........only to discover that you "can't pick from the baskets". So it seems to me all the best picked are presented in the baskets that are more than I need for vacation consumption. If you want onesies twosies, you have to walk in the farthest back of the market and there were sparse pickings far less attractive. I found that there are much lovelier-markets just a stretch further down the road. So buyer be patient and pass on by Powell's. In fact Harris Teeter had more attractive produce on the right before Croatan Hwy. read more

I bought a basket of peaches yesterday as my wife and I were coming home to MD from NC. When we arrived home, almost all of the very large bucket were spoiled. I called and asked for a refund on my credit card and the person I spoke to said that I could only get a refund if I came back to NC (more than a 4 hour drive). It is a shame. The people serving were wearing religious clothing. I would like to think that religious people were considerate of the things they were selling. But Powell's seems to be more interested in making a profit than by providing quality goods (the farmers should know whether their peaches are beyond ripe). Boycott this fruit stand. The people who run it don't care what they sell. read more

Wonderful selection of produce, canned goods , baked goods and anything you might need for the beach. Helpful staff offered to help carry items to my car and will help you pick out fruit for your trip. read more

This local farmers market is the best place to shop on the way to the beach. There is a large selection of beach toys, umbrellas and easy to snack on foods. The best part about this farmers market is that EVERYTHING is local in the summer. ( expect for the tropical section) This place offers a family vibe with a hint of professionalism in there customer service. read more

I'm not really sure about Powell's. On one hand, they do have some fresh local produce, but they seem to have just as much produce shipped in. I get skeptical of farmer's markets that sell Dole pineapples and mangos from Guatemala. I could be wrong, but they don't go out of the way to educate customers or label things as local. I usually buy some local muscadine grapes each year when they are in season. They definitely have a large selection, whether or not it's local. I bought peaches from there this year, but they were horrible. I bought them two weeks' later from another farm market and they were amazing. The prices are not as cheap as the stands further down the highway. I bought local peanuts from Powell's and later found the same brand of local peanuts at the grocery store for about a third of the price. I guess the key here is just to shop with caution. read more

I have to concur with previous reviewers, this place is a sham, it is as much a farmers market as your local grocery store. A farmers market entails that you are receiving your goods directly from the farms within the local community. Not the same items that I can find at many of the grocery stores we stopped at during our stay for the week. The weird thing is that you get kind of excited when you get near this place. You really want to stop here with all the colorful roadside signs you see. It draws you in. Then when you are here you think to yourself why. I will give it points that it is setup like a farmers market with items neatly put in baskets, but when you can see the boxes that those transplanted items came in directly in view it's not that authentic. Prices were a little steep for items that could be found at your local grocer. In my opinion, it is a safe bet to just skip over this particular "farmers market" and head up the road to one of the others. read more

We stopped here on our way to vacation. Everything was overpriced and our bread was moldy and flavorless. We noticed other breads were being put out frozen- so "not freshly made". They come in a bag and then wrap in plastic so that you can't see until later when you are trying to cook dinner. We come from places in Virginia and farmers markets who go by there work honestly. It's also not a free taste of fudge it's more like a free taste of flies- they leave spoons with a smear of mediocre and basic fudge. If you dare to taste be my guest but you need to battle flies for it. Snow cones took awhile and if you ask for two flavors they just blend them together carelessly rather than putting them side by side. This place is tourist trap trash you would do better at a different local small business or a Walmart produce section. read more

Okay, I keep seeing all of the negative reviews and I don't get it. And NO, I don't work here, know anyone that does, and am not related. I just thought I would mention that lest I get someone sending me a private message (as I have gotten before) accusing me of advertising for them. During sales training, my daughter was taught that when people have a good experience, they will usually tell a few people about it. But, if they have a bad experience, they will tell everyone that will listen. Thank God for Yelp! We get to hear the good, the bad, and the ugly. :) I have only been to Powell's twice and the staff was extremely helpful and friendly both times. I gave them four stars because I have to agree with many of the reviewers that their prices are a bit higher than most other produce stands. I have not gotten any produce that wasn't excellent. You can literally smell the produce when you walk up. I know that many say that they sell produce that isn't local. Most farmer's markets do. Powell's posts on a board what is local. You only need to ask where the other produce was shipped from and they will tell you. But, let me tell you ... this is NOT grocery store produce. It is fresh. I purchased tomatoes both times. Fragrant tomatoes. Juicy tomatoes. Tasty tomatoes. The kind that you can eat like an apple or use to make a tomato sandwich. The tomatoes came from Florida. I asked. They sell freshly made fudge, pies, loaves of bread, etc. They even sell gluten-free baked goods. The gluten-free was a bit more than I was willing to spend, but, I know that specialty items like that often require different prepping to avoid cross contamination; hence, the cost. Both times I purchased so much that they helped me carry it to my car. I can understand not wanting to pay a lot for something you can get substantially cheaper elsewhere; but, I'm not so sure the quality is the same. It is worth it to me to pay extra to get a superior quality food. I say at least stop, get a free sample of fudge, check it out, and if it's not for you ... well, just don't buy anything. We wanted to buy peaches here but they only sell them by the bag, don't allow you to look through the bag for quality, and charge you $19.99 for it. No thank you. What if I didn't want $20 worth of peaches? Nope, can't buy them that way. Then, there's a huge sign that says "dog walk" by the restrooms, and we walked our dog over there and then I was skirting the outside of the market with her, well away from the tables, while my husband walked up to the produce tables, and an employee came up to meet and said "I'm sorry, your dog can't be inside or outside the market" ...what? You have a giant sign that invites dog owners, then tell them they can't be OUTSIDE the market? Should I teleport my dog to your bathroom area? I just did not feel welcomed here and I did not feel like the business is set up to best serve the customer if you can't even select your own produce or quantity of produce. No thank you. read more

Farmer's market? Sure...if you count produce purchased from a produce purveyor. I mean, it's true...the produce came from farms. Corporate farms. Dole, Driscoll, and other commercial farms. Mix that up with a ridiculous markup and you get Powell's. Now...there are some local-ish products (read producTS, not producE) available at premium prices. Take note from your customers and learn, we aren't here to destroy you. We are here to tell everyone our experience, and if our experience was pleasant we would have given you 4-5 stars. This place is a crock. They claim items are local, yet we saw an employee opening plastic containers of Driscoll's strawberries and putting them into green cardboard, more farm stand-like containers. We dropped our basket and left. Stick to small farm stands with truly local produce. This place is just an overpriced grocery store. read more

We have stopped at Powell's for years on our way to the Outer Banks, often with mixed results. Attempted to stop this year to find no staff wearing masks and many signs that say it is "your choice to wear a mask." Also, if you CHOOSE to wear a mask, you must remove your sunglasses. What happened to choice? Sigh. So I made my choice and will try a different farm stand down the road, hopefully with some semblance of COVID precautions. read more

All kinds of sign along rt-168 that this is the place to stop on the way to OBX. Wow Over priced for local produce. Hit this place for the end of season sale, even with the discount it was still overpriced. Talk about a tourist trap this is IT !!!!!! Poor choices, slow service. Some stuff produce not locally grown but imported. Fudge, Beach umbrellas, water boards, ect. Things you will find here, not your typical farm market affair. I stopped by here the other day with my grandbaby. It was 100degrees. The market employees we're so helpful and polite in aiding me with my produce to my car. They even gave me a complimentary can of their peanut brittle because it was slightly melted. I just popped it in the fridge and it was delicious. I bought nectarines that were priced to market prices and were delicious, and the best cantaloupe I have had in a long time. Yes, you can get prices cheaper 20 miles down the road, but I didn't have time to drive another several miles. This was just what I was looking for. read more

Don't do it! This was the one road-side fruit stand that we could turn into on our way home from OBX--and it has to be one of the worst out there. The produce I saw was overpriced--more than I pay in the grocery store or farmers' markets closer to D.C. We stopped for the peaches and the watermelon, which seemed to be what they were advertising the most. The peaches could either be purchased in a bucket (complete with a shovel for playing in the sand), or by the pound from a pile in the back barn. ALL of the buckets had rotten/bruised fruit. I spent way too much time trying to find a bucket that I would be able to use all the fruit, but I just wasn't successful. You're not allowed to pick and choose peaches from multiple buckets, so I ended up just buying 2 peaches from the pile in the barn. They ended up being fairly bland and mealy. The watermelon isn't sweet at all. The other berries we bought didn't taste good either, and half of them had gone bad by the time we even got home another 3 1/2 hours later. So much for having fruit in my lunch on Monday! Also, NOT dog friendly--won't even allow the dogs out of the car in the parking lot. All around, I would recommend driving past this fruit stand and going elsewhere. There are plenty of other stands to choose from. read more

This is the worse review I have ever given. The fruit was old and tired. Blueberries were mushy. The kettle corn was stale as were the roasted peanuts. I threw the popcorn and peanuts away after tasting one bite of each. My apple was just ok. I will never stop by this roadside market again, especially since there are a few nearby with much better ratings. I should have checked yelp before we stopped. Total waste of money. read more

My family enjoyed stopping at Powell's Roadside Market! The fruit looked, smelled, and tasted amazing! The fudge was delicious and the selection of goods was large. We found it difficult to only select a few items. The only downside, I would say, is all of the bees surrounding the fruit. But there were free samples of the fudge to try, and the staff was friendly. If you're passing by, give this place a quick stop! read more

I love buying from highway fruit stands, but we were disappointed in everything we bought, and the price we paid. All the fruit we bought (strawberries, blackberries, peaches and watermelon) were bland, tart and not sweet. The blackberries just simply tasted strange, as if they were fed bad water or grew in poor soil. The peaches were bland and mealy. With the exception of the watermelon, produce was priced about the same or more than grocery stores. Like Michelle, I also noticed a lot of imported produce. I understand the need to sell a wide variety of stuff to appeal to as many customers as possible in order to stay in business. I also understand that NC can't grow everything. But if I'm buying from a farmer's market, I'd like to support the local economy and eat what's best locally. I eat a lot of fruit and vegetables. Fruit typically disappears around me, but we couldn't finish any of the fruit from Powell's. We threw a lot of it away. If I didn't have a 5 hr drive back home ahead of me on a Sunday night, I would've turned around and asked for a refund. read more

Powell's has a great variety of veggies and many diff kinds of fruit. Being located right on 168 makes it easy to stop in and get what you need to and get on your way. The collards are local and fresh.. great prices and the staff is always so nice. Def recommended and will be back! read more

You'd think with all the signage they have 20 miles down the street as if you're on 95 heading to South of the Border that this place would be THE BOMB! WRONG!! There's nothing "local" or "fresh picked" in my mind when you pick up a tomato and it has a sticker on it. The prices are outrageous and the people aren't that friendly. They can keep all the hype. I enjoyed visiting Powell's Market! I bought some peaches, tomatoes and fudge and it was all amazing! The only part I didn't fully enjoy was the music. I stopped on my way to the beach and the way home. On my first visit there was pop music playing and the atmosphere was really fun and I enjoyed singing along with the radio. The second time I visited it was slow music that wasn't that cheerful. It just changed the whole vibe of the place the two times I visited. But overall the girls at the counter were nice both times and I will stop by again when I can. read more

I should've read the reviews before stopping, but they market so well that it would've been hard to resist stopping. I love buying local produce and expect to pay a premium, but the prices here are exuberant. You can't really "pick" your own produce, you have to buy the bucket. No way in earth am I spending $15 on a bucket of fruit I can't inspect and swap out. Also, corn has worms. Thats just corn. But not being able to pull the husk back and check? That's crazy. On a positive note, the tasting stand is awesome and definitely a great way to sell the overpriced produce. The people who work here, minus the cashiers, are all nice and if you have questions they are more than happy to help. The cashiers were not very pleasent, but in 100+degree weather I can't say I would be nice either. Next trip I will enjoy the cute signs and skip this stop. read more
