I specifically called to inquire about these two options, between rent and reserve, when on their site. Assured that if I only reserved and did not complete by signing the contract and showing ID, it would revert in a certain amount of time. This was not the case. I sold several of the items I was concerned about storing and called to let them know (the very next day) I would no longer need the reservation. No issues with the guy I spoke to on the phone; they would cancel the reservation, and I'd get my hold refunded within 3-5 business days. I waited a little over a week, but there was no refund. Called back multiple times before finally getting a return call. This time, the guy on the phone apologizes and states that the manager refuses to refund the reservation. I confirmed I did not sign the contract I was emailed, nor did I go in and physically sign one or provide ID. He agreed, but advised that management would not allow the refund. I left a request to speak with said manager, but I never received a return call. After multiple phone calls over a three-week period requesting to speak directly with management concerning the issue, I felt so bad for the poor guy answering the phones, who was obviously caught in the middle, that I finally just filed a claim with my bank. It's an obvious money grab situation. I've already advised seven different people at our complex who inquired about self-storage in the area, specifically not to use Martin's after this encounter.

Unfortunately, gate problems have prevented me from accessing my inventory approximately 2-3 times a month, especially on Sundays. When your livelihood depends on accessing your inventory to ship orders, this is a major problem. My breaking point came over a second 10x10 unit. I saw an available unit directly across from mine and asked the office manager if I could rent that specific unit. She checked her paperwork, removed the available tag, made sure there was a new lock inside, and told me she would handle the paperwork because she was leaving early that day. She also told me she would process it under the internet promotion with the first month free and reduced pricing afterward. I specifically asked if I should rent it online myself. She told me there was no guarantee I would get that particular unit if I did and that she would handle it. I relied on that. My monthly payment increased, so I believed the additional unit had been added at the promotional rate. For approximately three months, the same manager saw me using the unit during walkthroughs and never once told me there was a problem or missing paperwork. Then on July 27, I arrived to pull customer orders and discovered I was locked out. I even offered to immediately move everything into my original unit while the situation was sorted out. Instead, I was denied access to my business inventory until I paid over $200 for the 10x10--even though my 10x15 costs about the same. Yes, I was upset during my first phone call. I had just been locked out of inventory my business depends on. What I did not appreciate was being made to feel like a liar or an idiot and being sarcastically asked, "You thought it was free?" No, I did not. My rent had increased without notice, and I believed I was paying the promotional rate I had been told about. Why would I intentionally put my business at risk by knowingly using a unit without paying and risk being locked out of inventory I need to fulfill orders? I would never have used that unit without believing I had management's authorization. After paying to regain access, I was then told I could potentially be back charged for the previous months. There are other issues as well. The "climate-controlled" building has at times felt hotter inside than outside. Account access is limited to a phone rather than having a normal desktop portal. Most frustratingly, I could not find a clear way through the company's website to contact corporate and file a formal complaint. I had to Google an email address and hope it reached someone. I am posting this here because the company appears to respond to Yelp reviews. I would like someone from corporate, independent of this location, to contact me and review what happened. Please review my account history, the timeline, and any available surveillance footage. I am not asking for special treatment--I am asking for someone to fairly investigate how I ended up locked out of a unit that I had every reason to believe management had properly rented to me.

For instance, the Sprunt building started as a flour mill and a hominy mill. The structure was renovated in 1919 and became the central trading office for cotton bales, eventually growing into one of the world's largest and busiest cotton-exporting companies. The bales left the Cape Fear River port's docks to be shipped directly to England, Europe, and other parts of the United States, and remained fully operational until 1950. After the shipping port declined, the complex was abandoned and deteriorated to the point that it was scheduled for complete demolition. Fortunately, local developers stepped in to save the buildings, preserving the original architecture, heart pine beams, and exposed brickwork. The marketplace officially opened in 1976. It was the very first successful "adaptive reuse" historic preservation project in the state. Today, the Cotton Exchange is a wonderful, bustling mixture of locally owned restaurants and specialty shops. While exploring the multi-level halls, I really enjoyed viewing the built-in hallway exhibits filled with vintage photographs, educational storyboards, and antique tools tracing the complex's port history. I have since learned of a few treasures I missed while visiting, so I am already planning a return trip to find the rest and explicitly check out the Wilmington Walk of Fame installation out in the courtyards! It is a fantastic destination for exploring downtown, offering a large parking lot where merchants will validate your parking ticket with a purchase.

And I was surprise with the lack of local goods (eg olive oil place is all imported but no info on the labels). Probably could have enjoyed a light meal here but not my kind of place - too tourist trappy.
