Free opportunity to watch prairie dogs for as long as you want - so fun!! There are tons of prairie dog holes around the park besides the main designated area. You can drive all over the park and see prairie dogs. I went at 9am and 5pm and they were always out everywhere. You can buy lettuce and carrots to feed them; they will likely run into a hole when you throw out food, but it's fun to see them snack on it. Throw food, drive into another area, then come back and watch them. It's right off I27 and easy to access. A must when visiting Lubbock! read more

What a fun place. Could have spent all day there. The baby prairie dogs were walking around and playing feet from you. It was so neat. These guys were everywhere. There was a shaded viewing site along with a little history about the town and who started it. Also information about prairie dog family life. This is a must see when in Lubbock. read more

It was 12°F on December 23, 2022, when we pulled up to the entrance into Prairie Dog Town. This free little sanctuary of sorts is located in the northeast area of Lubbock, TX - a perfect stop to help my daughters relax and have a few laughs before heading to LBB airport for their flight without me. (The flight still hasn't happened, but that's another story for a different Yelp page.) The place is open from dawn to dusk year round. There was a bit of postponed sewer reconstruction that caused road closures in some areas when we went. We immediately started gushing over the cute little fuzzy creatures... and laughed when they ran next to each other with their chubby bodies jiggling everywhere. Temporarily, we forgot how cold it was. It's located inside MacKenzie Park which has a ton of recreational opportunities: Baseball Fields, Canyon Run Dog Park, Crossroads in Time Sculpture Garden (dedication Oct 2004), Disc Golf Course, Equestrian Trail, Joyland Amusement Park, Meadowbrook Golf Course, Moonlight Musicals Amphitheatre, Mustangs-Sculpture by Steve Teeters, Santa Land, and softball fields. This area is also home to MacKenzie Park Lake. There are multiple benches, picnic areas, a playground, reserved picnic pavilions, restrooms, and a season snack concession area too. Back in the day, "Prairie Dog Pete" was the city's goodwill ambassador and mascot. Maybe a giant statue of Pete or those silly face cut-outs with a family of prairie dogs would make this place even more memorable. read more

So cute!!!! This is such a fun little stop for the whole family! Make sure to take some veggies out with you to feed them!

Prairie Dog Town is a cute spot where you can kill half an hour or so if you happen to be in the neighborhood. PDT is situated inside a large, multi-use park.  There's no shade here, so parking your car and sitting in it to watch the prairie dogs play isn't a viable option. Tip: PDT is very close to the Wind Power Museum, so you can easily hit both destinations on the same trip. Bottom line: This place is cute, but for my money it's a one and done kind of destination. read more

Free entry, lots of parking, walk up and look at prairie dogs. You're not supposed to feed them, but who's counting? They seem to like carrots quite a bit from what we observed. I'd guess there were in the hundreds of them, pretty much everywhere you look. I personally would've called it Prarie Dog City, but that doesn't change how cute and active these little dogs were. Fun and free activity!!! Feed these cute, furry and fat prarie dogs. It was so much fun to watch these guys enjoy the snacks that everyone was bringing. Apparently they mostly enjoy Cheetos Puffs, so be prepared to bring them snacks and watch them come out and enjoy. It was a nice drive and a pretty park. The activity is free and you can spend as much or as little time as you please. Remember the barrier is there for a reason. Also next time I might pack those chunky guys some healthy treats and do some research on what they actually eat or maybe not- they seemed to enjoy the Cheetos and leave the lettuce someone brought LOL read more

3.5 stars Prairie Dog Town was one of those places it was advertised to stop at in Lubbock. It was free, plenty of parking, and next to a golf course. Now, I'm used to seeing prairie dogs at home ("those rodents") and the Navajos in my state claim that they do taste good... anyways, these furry little guys were actually pretty entertaining to watch with their squeaks and the chunky ones stuffing their faces with bread that passerby's threw at them. We spent about 10-15 minutes here roaming the park, taking photos, and reading Mr. Clapp's history about how the park came to be. 2021 #33 read more

Created in the 1930's from the imagination, conservation and initiative of one local couple, the Clapp's. They placed 2 prairie dogs in an enclosure in an effort to protect them. It is amazing the place is still running nearly 100 years later. Unfortunately the problem they were trying to solve is no longer a problem as the surrounding areas are swarming with prairie dogs. Ironically, the least populated field seemed to be their designated area. That said, it's a quick drive off the freeway and a fun Americana roadside experience. read more

I'm not sure why this place would be given low reviews- it is free! Especially if you don't live in an area where prairie dogs roam should make a visit. It is probably more fun if you bring them food so that you can interact with them. I saw broccoli thrown on the ground but didn't see any of the chonks eating it but I did see one little beast holding an entire slice of bread! Go over to the left side where there is a fence separating Prairie Dog Town from the golf range. One dog (actually from the squirrel family) ran up to the fence and took a carrot from my hand! We came on a Sunday in August in the late afternoon and there were lots of prairie dogs to admire at that time of the day. read more

I recommend bringing some fruit or veggies and they'll eat right from your hand. So cute! Just wish it was cleaned up a little more because garbage cans were overflowing and there was litter around. So random, so cute. This is a small enclosed area in Mackenzie Park that wild prairie dogs live in peace. You're not allowed to go over the wall and touch them, but it's kind of like a zoo where you can sit behind the wall and watch them live their daily lives. They are so stinkin cute and chubby! If you make crinkling noises, they slowly come towards you like theirs going to be fed ;) This place is pretty cute especially if you have youngsters w your group. read more

Who doesn't love prairie dogs?? You can feed the Prairie dogs and they get close enough to touch but I would not advise it. Don't bring dogs or anything they find to be a threat because they will all go down in their tunnels until they feel safe again. read more

Yay! Seriously - yay! Thanks, Lubbock, for having the vision for such a place so many years ago. And, thanks, Lubbock, for keeping it safe and clean to visit! Others had commented that the park feels sketchy. I guess I can see that. But when I was there, there were random people there, honestly just looking at prairie dogs. There was one car in the parking lot, with a dude just sitting in it. Maybe creepy, if I'd been all alone. But I prefer to think he was just watching the dogs from the comfort of his car. Of note: maybe look up the weather conditions and time of day most favorable to viewing. I saw two during my quick dusk visit. Also, yeah, I'd totally bring food. There were scraps of potato chips and bread everywhere close by, and either the dogs don't want to get that close, or they're sick of chips and bread. read more

Not the only place in Lubbock you can find prairie dogs but apparently the first town to be protected and thus the most well-known and promoted. The area is at the edge of a large park - nearest sports fields. There is a low wall people are supposed to stay on one side of and a large mainly dirt area with a large prairie dog population - some of whom also are on a dirt island on the human side of the wall in the middle of the parking area. If you've never seen prairie dogs, this is probably a good place to come. Later in the day is probably better. The park itself is also very nice - with fish in the lake and bike trails. read more

What's there to complain about? A large field full of prairie dogs is probably the cutest thing there is to see in Lubbock! When we went to Prairie Dog Town a storm was blowing in and I think most of the prairie dogs were already underground, but I was still able to see enough to say 'AWWW' over and over. I love animals and this was one of my favorite visits to see an animal ever! We brought baby carrots to feed them and they would run as fast as they could to get them! We even had some come from the asphalt and sneak up behind us asking for carrots. Another prairie dog actually jumped on the ledge I was sitting on and walked towards me. A few even took the carrots from my hand! There were many little prairie dog babies this time of year as well! The create amazing tunnel systems, are so cute, wag their tails, run for snacks, momma breaks off parts of carrots for her babies etc. I also saw the many look out prairie dogs keeping everyone safe. It is a good lesson that we are better and safer when we work together. 10/10 in my book read more

This is one of those places that anyone who lives in Lubbock should see. Not so much because it is a big attraction or anything like that, but because this is somewhat unique to Lubbock. Prairie Dog Town is essentially an open field where prairie dogs live. Unless you really like prairie dogs, you really only ever need to go once. I went late morning and saw around 15 prairie dogs. They are not shy about coming close to you, so you do get a really good look at them. If you're a Texas Tech student who's moving on or a Lubbockite that's never been, be sure to pay a visit. read more

After reading the reviews on trip advisor I was very excited to visit PD town. We were all very dissapointed. Such a simple yet wonderful experience for my boys. My 3 year old loved watching the prairie dogs and my 11 month old was all giggles too. Great place for small children and anyone really and it's wonderful that Lubbock keeps such a place to protect these little creatures. read more

Mackenzie Park can be sketchy to be honest. Every time we visit, we're either alone or we wish we were...which is a shame because the park has possibilities AND contains one of the best animal destinations ever: Prairie Dog Town! I know these critters are unwelcome in most prairie backyards, but this sanctuary is a true PD metropolis and you can get pretty close to happy PD antics. One time we arrived when they were just waking up and stretching their little arms. This month they looked fat and were chowing down on a late-morning breakfast. They don't stay within their sanctuary either. I love this place. Be aware of your surroundings when you go. read more

I stopped here on the way to airport on a recent trip to Lubbock. Prairie Dog Town delivers what it promises: a decent sized patch land inhabited by prairie dogs, as well as a couple of trees and an occasional bird who flies in over the approximately one-foot wall that surrounds the P.D. habitation zone. The admission cost is right (free) and there are a couple of informational plaques that bestow prairie dog knowledge on people who know how to read. Several visitors brought bread for the prairie dogs to eat, which certainly enhanced the visit. Overall, it's worthy of a 5 minute stop (maybe 10 if you're passionate). read more
