A lot of different cooking/ baking items which is why I went to the store. But they also have a variety of other items.

I was walking along Linn Street towards RSVP when imagine my surprise, I see this store. Being an avid cook and kitchen gadget junkie, of course I had to go inside. I wasn't expecting much because most smaller kitchen supply stores don't impress me. I have high standards and prefer well-made high quality products. Well, you can imagine how surprised I was to find this unicorn of a store. I felt like I just walked through a door into wonderland. I thought I owned every kitchen gadget that was worth owning, but I was wrong. I found the cutest baker's dusting wand by OXO and a cool round trivet made of strung-together felted wool balls. They had some of my favorite brands like GIR, Staub, Microplane, Nordic Ware and Opinel. They also had a cool selection of aprons, mugs, spices, oils and vinegars. I was in heaven as I walked through the store. There was so much to look at. They have a well-curated selection of items that I would want to carry if I had my own kitchen supply store. I would much rather support a great locally owned store than a big chain like Williams Sonoma (that doesn't even really carry what I want). Iowa City is so lucky to have a store as wonderful as this. Every time I visit this city I have a few favorite stores that I must visit and I'm so happy to add this one to my list. read more

I didn't know I needed a kitchen store downtown, but I totally did. I also didn't know what a spurtle was, but now I do. (Read on to learn more.) Prairie Kitchen Store opened during the pandemic, wah wahhhh. So a lot of the things I love about this local biz, I haven't even gotten to experience yet. PKS boasts a professional kitchen (that will someday host classes) and sells craft beer, wine and coffee to enjoy while you peruse. Genius. I envision many future trips, enjoying a pint and buying way too many of their eclectic items. Kitchen gadgets and appliances. Locally created boards and said 'spurtle.' As I mentioned earlier, what the heck is a spurtle?!? Here I was, online shopping their virtual market and I came across this beautiful wood thing. A quick Google search later: a spurtle is a wooden Scottish kitchen tool, dating from the fifteenth century. It can scramble eggs, stir soups and flip stuff. What a versatile tool. I have never seen one before. But alas, PKS sells them! And they don't sell just an spurtle. Only beautiful handcrafted ones from Urbana, Iowa. Choose maple, cherry or walnut. I need a spurtle in my life-- especially if I can #supportlocal in the process. If you needed an idea on what to get me, look no further. It took a lot of restraint to not purchase one that online shopping spree... Anyways, there are also fabulous knives, a cast iron skillet and more! Plus local goods-- like honey, coffee, bbq sauce, hot sauce, maple syrup, oils and my latest purchase, Joanna's Tonic Syrup Tasting Duo. PKS offers quality items with an emphasis on local. This is a great new addition to the Northside of Iowa City! It's a kitchen store that has a well-curated collection of high quality kitchen essentials and gadgets, combined with a professional kitchen for cooking classes and a bar with beer on tap to help make your shopping experience better. The kitchen goods they sell are all the sort that you buy once and they might well last a lifetime, so don't be put off by the slightly higher priced brands. There is an emphasis on USA made products, sustainable materials, and Iowa pride. I got some (nonstick) loaf pans, a muffin pan, and some tiny cutlery. I used restraint and didn't buy any of the yummy-looking selection of bitters from their compact but well-stocked bar-tending section, but now I'm rather wishing I had. I can't wait to see what cooking classes they offer when COVID calms down! As the holiday gifting season approaches, this is a fantastic place to come to pick up gifts for anyone who cooks in your family! read more
