If I could give this hospital no stars I would. I asked the nurse for my prn meds and she refused to give it to me. Then when I asked for grievance paperwork, she refused to give me that or the patient advocate number. I left the hospital feeling worse leaving than I did coming in. PSJ inpatient is so disrespectful and unprofessional and is so far from being a safe place where a struggling individual can go for help. Worst psych care I have ever experienced in my entire life. Also when I asked a male staff member to leave me alone in order for me to cope and calm down, he would not stop screaming at me. I have been in a jail cell on a mental health hold in SD and I would say that even jail cell was way better than this hospital. read more

I went here back in 2021-2022 and it was the worst. The lunch lady was horrible, told my friend she had enough food while everyone got 2 servings. They wouldn't call you your preferred name without parent permission. I was locked on unit for the last week I was there when I had no contact information from any other patient. I was told it was good time to practice coping skills. I found out through my foster dad why I was really on unit. The blood draw sucks they didn't do it right I bruised so badly. My doctor was just nasty as well and so was the therapist. I would NOT recommend going here. I only got worse. read more

Very disappointed with their lack of services. We were hopeful to get some help for an adult relative. They held him for 6 days. He was discharged with no plan, no changes to medications, no follow up care and one fat bill. What was the point? Extremely frustrating. read more

I actually give this place a ZERO star rating but can't post my review without choosing at least one star! I can't even call it a hospital. My preteen son was in mental health crisis. He was sent to Prairie-St. John's, 4 hours from home, because there were no other mental health beds for kids. Our experience was HORRIBLE!!! There was NO communication from his doctor, Dr. Hess. He didn't return our calls or emails. Our son's therapist was involved but often seemed surprised by the doctor's choices. Or son said he didn't want to hurt HIMSELF but he wanted to hurt someone. Dr. Hess said our son was fine and sent him home. Less than 24 hours later he started our house on fire. Our son was more dysregulated while at PSJ than he has EVER been which leads me to believe something horrible was happening. The nurse called me one night and asked me to talk to my son. He was hysterical and I couldn't understand anything he said except "Get me out of here!!!" and "Help me!!!" I could tell that the phone was stationary and my son was pacing or running around. He was put in straight jackets and drugged into oblivion... He was drugged with ativan into a zombie like state... And during all of this, Dr. Hess discharged him! I was HAPPY to get him out of there!!! DO NOT SEND ANYONE TO THIS TORTURE!!! They will come out worse than they went in!!! read more

I have been to worse places then this. They give you more freedom here to go downstairs to get food or go to rec time. They also have a tv and classes. The food is decent for cafeteria food. I would go here a again if I had to do so but obviously the situation is never ideal. read more

I was sent here for a week not that bad as other people. Some of the techs did not do there jobs for example someone was having a break down in the gym two people and two other people yelling and each other the staff was just watching wasent trying to calm them down. My 3 other peers was calming the people down that were crying and panicking. The food is absolutely horrible. The mashed potatoes smelled like cigarettes and tasted like cigarettes. No reason for them to be smelling like that or either tasting like cigarettes, I've barley even talked with the therapist or psychiatrist. The nurses told me that their supposed to meet with me everyday at least once I only talked with them 3 times during my stay. I have sleeping problems and I had to take a describe sleep medication for 4 days and they stopped giving it to me because I tried to OD on it in the past and they refused to give it to me and the medication I was taking for sleep helped me a lot , ending up they gave me a on the shelf one barley helped. The one thing that I personally hated and many other of my peers was the strip search. I know it's for "safety" and stuff but that's just doing to much. I felt like I wasn't even a human, this whole place I didn't even feel human because how it was like. And some of my peers were forced to be in this weird sack thing for no reason because they supposedly tried to harm them selfs. I also personally think the building is nice but in my room there was a peer always yelling at night time and some of the things was a little bit triggering and I just think they should've added sound proof walls but I know that could be a problem for staff to hear things happening in the room. I was sent here after being threatened by a brand new APRN who had no relevant experience in mental health issues and didn't bother to ask about safety plans or actual suicidal intent. She forcibly took away my ACTIVELY TASKING service animal, and threatened me with police action - which as a survivor of abuse resulted in me shutting down and dissociating. While there I was given a PRN anti-anxiety medication with known and SEVERE possible interactions with my anti-depressants that could have caused significant medical issues. I was not given a suicide risk assessment until almost 48 hours later, despite the fact that it is required more frequently - the discharge paperwork was signed and dated before my only SRA was completed. I was strip-searched and threatened with violence for sighing. I was denied my own clothing back, and during the course of my stay, no fewer than three nurses and two male patients made inappropriate sexual comments about the clothing I was given. These nurses also ignored the information on my triggers and utilized specific phrasing that had been marked at intake as things to not say to me. Because my service animal was not present with me, I had a full autistic meltdown due to violations of my personal space, was frequently touched in areas that have nerve damage and are very painful for me to be touched at, and engaged in self-harmful stimming because I was not alerted to what I was doing so I could stop. I ended up with multiple additional scars on my arms from scratching at my skin (something which I do without noticing when I am overstimulated or stressed). No nurse or provider noticed or did anything to stop it, or provide first aid after the fact. The group sessions were a load of hot garbage. They primarily focused on things which patients had no way of implementing, such as significant dietary changes or exercising out of doors. Additionally, a lot of the information was significantly out of date or incorrect, such as claiming that depression can be caused by caffeine (there is no known link between the two), or that all carbohydrates make depression worse ( refined carbohydrates, such as white bread and soda, have been linked to depression in post-menopausal women, but unrefined carbs are not, and there's no known link between unrefined carbs and depression when eaten in a balanced diet). Ironically, a majority of meals offered were high in processed sugars and refined carbs - deep-fried shrimp and preserved peaches, fried chicken tenders, sugary cereals, etc. As a person who needs to eat a fairly strictly balanced diet due to physical health issues, it made my overall health worse as well. There were exposed cords in several areas, and the staff handling medication dispensation didn't pay attention to allergies. I have an anaphylactic reaction to ibuprofen, and was offered... Ibuprofen for pain caused by a severely sprained ankle. If I had been actively suicidal I not only could have killed myself in this hospital, but would have been actively aided by the staff, since they openly admitted to not having any epipens or albuterol inhalants on site when I pointed out that they offered a medication that could kill me. Despite purportedly being a "voluntary" admission, I was denied the ability to check myself out, which is considered a felony charge for false imprisonment. I was threatened repeatedly with violence by the "therapist" present during a twenty minute meeting, and he lacked any relevant knowledge on autism, trauma, and comorbid issues which affected previous treatments I have received. He attempted to switch my anti-depressant to Lexapro, ignoring the information provided in my medical charts which clearly state that Lexapro was not an effective medication for my depression and that it had severe side-effects on me. I was discharged after 48 hours, with no changes to my medication, no useful resources, three open wounds, and new additional trauma to add to my pile from being sexually harassed, threatened repeatedly with violence, being forcibly taken from my medical equipment, and being strip-searched. Unfortunately I cannot directly sue Prairie St. John's for this because they have a disclaimer present on intake paperwork which I was coerced into signing, again under threat of violence. This is the last place anyone who needs any form of help should be sent to. They are a disgrace to the mental health field, and they have no appropriate oversight or checks in place to prevent medical malpractice or abuse of patients. read more

The "we give a free assessment" is a joke. Told my son he was to see a specialist on ADHD for med and a counselor for his addiction. They couldn't make the appts, we had to figure out which was best. The counselor they gave us was not a CD counselor and the med clinic would not do anything for over 2 weeks til he comes back. The assessment counselor actually told him he could continue his drug use until seeing the specialist because he would get it on the street anyway. What a joke and total lack of leaving the patient hanging. We finally had him convinced to seek treatment and have had nothing but roadblocks read more

I was an in patient here almost two years ago after I set my house on fire during a manic episode. As soon as I got there I was strip searched which I would've been fine with if I wasn't judged so harshly (mainly about my scars). Once I was taken to my wing there was no room available and they had to move a bunch of mattresses to make room for me which happened at least every other day. By the second night I was there they had taken me completely off of all my entire medication regimen and put me on a whole new one without weening me off at all. The staffs ability to handle incidents with the residents was non existent. There was a guy that had an obvious concussion from hitting his head on a chair and the techs did nothing about it. During group one of the residents was actively self-harming and the staff just let it happen. After 2 weeks they asked me and my mom if we thought I felt any better or improved at all and we both clearly stated that I was no different yet I got discharged the same day with no outpatient care plan. While I was there they moved me to the "quiet wing" even though I have Tourette's and one of the staff tried to convince me I was faking (I'm clinically diagnosed and it was in my chart) I was almost overdosed on the medication they gave me and had seizures when I got home. There was one night where all of the rooms were at capacity so they moved me to the CHILDS FLOOR and had me sleep NEXT TO A CHILD!!! All in all I suggest they hire better staffing, and have a more thorough training process that focuses on the care and comfort of the patients read more

This place is horrible no one knows anything and they drug you up with what they think might work. I walked in there with one med for my anxiety, one for my migraines and one for my insomnia came out in a week on now on 6 meds. They also won't do 1 on 1 therapy and has you call an outside provider. They have groups but they don't do anything because there's always one person that makes it all about them so the rest suffer on trying to hear what the person is trying to teach. They don't have clocks in there at all so you never know what time it is unless you go to nurses station. When I went in they called the cops I asked them to specifically buzz my unit and I would come down(keep in mind I was going willingly) they some how managed to come up to my unit knocked on my door and there were 4 cops standing there. I also love how the cop asked me why I'm there right by my front door airing out my dirty laundry to anyone that was home. Oh and my fav part was how they acted like I was under arrest(I put my stuff in the back I couldn't have anything in the back seat with me like my cell phone) then they made me sit there for a good 20 min freaking out(anxiety). Prairie St. John's only made our family member worse, they over medicated them to the point that they left the hospital in worse condition then they went in. Ruined our family! The hospital misdiagnosed and did not give proper treatment. Counselors and doctors supported very poor and destructive decisions even when the family brought up that medications were causing destructive behaviors. Please go somewhere else!!! If I could give this a minus stars score I would! During my family members time at Prairie St John's (in and out patient) I saw multiple patients hooking up, drug usage and other destructive behavior. Please avoid!!! read more

I went here four times as a teen. It didn't help me at all. They gave me a bunch of medications that didn't work, made us do group therapy all day, and had numerous ridiculous rules. We also weren't allowed to go outside. We had to stay on our floor the whole time. My shortest stay was 8 days, but my longest stay was three months. How long you stay is largely a matter of whether the doctor likes you or not. Each of my stays was traumatic. Please don't bring your children here. It doesn't work and may make them feel or act worse. I felt overwhelmingly stifled. read more

This place is a joke! My daughter was transferred here from the hospital after swallowing 2 bottles of prescription pills. The psychiatrist, Dr.Hess met with her twice and sent her home because she said she didn't have thoughts of hurting herself. We argued with him because it had only been a couple days and they hadn't worked with her at all to figure out why she took the pills. He refused to listen to us and said he was releasing her anyways and if we wanted her to stay we'd have to pay out of pocket because he wouldn't bill our insurance anymore. Needless to say, they didn't help her at all and it was basically a couple day babysitting service. She even self harmed while she was there, so that shows how well they do their jobs. Prairie didn't admit my close friend (15) into the unit after meeting with the Psychiatrist, Counselor, Doctor early one morning. His mom wanted him admired and said I'm scared he's going to hurt himself. They still resisted. Around 9:00 that night his mom had to go with his dad to a cattle meeting, forced him to go but wouldn't... On their way home ambulances came flying past them on their road.. He committed suicide. I hate prairie, they do nothing and the owner is Evil. She blamed his death on his good friend when she took it just as hard as the family and did nothing to him, she stopped him from doing it before. She's sick and twisted. Find help elsewhere please, save yourself. They misdiagnosed him with bipolar a year earlier, with his chemical imbalance it made him bipolar. The people at prairie don't care and Jen faul is twisted for blaming it on a 15 year old girl who did nothing phone records prove it. Please avoid. read more

For a place that specializes in mental health, they are not very hospitable. The lady I talked to on the phone was very rude and not very helpful. You would think they would understand what mental health is and have hospitality for everyone. I would not go or send anyone who has mental health to a place where people are that rude; people do not respond well to that. read more

My son finally agreed to help and our whole family new he needed IN HOUSE TREATMENT. They took the word of a addict as to what sort of help he should have. They assessed him to out patient treatment. He did not go to first 2 days, went wednesday skipped thursday and went Friday. following week was not much better. Did not pass his chemical tests and then was kicked out of the program.We would not recommend this place to anyone who has some sort of issues. They love people who can fill their spaces and with insurance. Probably people with out also because I'm sure they get paid by government programs.Their end is suppose to be confidential , but when I would call to see if my son showed up instead of PROFESSIONAL EMPLOYEES calling me to stop calling they tell my son to have me stop calling. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE ????? I REPEAT DO NOT GO HERE FOR HELP !!!!!! His Addiction counselor was Jason Grabar .....
