Josh, was the service technician that served the moment. He took care to inform of foreseeable concerns, but admitted that even through his diagnostics couldn't narrow what triggered my issue. What could've been a very expensive call was minimally fiscally conservative in its service charge. The system was running again very shortly. And this morning, I rose to the comfort I have grown accustomed. PREFERRED is now my preferred HVAC/plumbing go to and I elected their PPP maintenance option. WARNING: Preferred Home Services tried to take advantage of me by significantly overcharging for routine work--protect yourself and look elsewhere. My tenant smelled gas and alerted me--obviously a serious situation. I had Dominion Energy come out immediately. They repaired the meter, tested pressure, shut off the gas, and noted we needed to have our gas lines tested. My tenant found Preferred Home Services who could come out same day. Keep in mind: this is a small 1,200 sq ft home with just two basic gas appliances (stove and tankless water heater), and all piping is easily accessible in the crawl space. Then came the shock. Their technician, Revlon Spooner, quoted $961.26 to test the system--claiming it was "discounted" from $2,000 after calling management. That's not a deal--that's a red flag. When I pushed back, I was told the work was "dangerous" (despite the gas already being shut off) and warned that if they didn't find a leak, I might need to replace all the pipes for additional cost. That felt like pressure tactics, not professional advice. I said no. I called other plumbers--quotes came in between $200-$400. I hired one, and the job was completed for about $300. No drama, no scare tactics, no inflated pricing. One more thing: they require a credit card upfront just to schedule--especially concerning if you're not onsite. Bottom line: this felt like an attempt to take advantage of me and my tenants during an urgent situation. Don't fall for it. Get multiple quotes and protect yourself. I recently hired Preferred Home Services when I had an issue with a digital thermostat. Their tech was extremely helpful and was able to replace the unit, but I was floored by the total cost of the visit. The service call was on a Sunday, so I certainly understand the premium charge. But I was essentially charged $500 for labor to unplug and plug in a new thermostat (a $200 part). No new wiring, just plug and play. The tech did check the furnace and air conditioner, but my total bill was $700. Again, I understand the Sunday premium charge, but a $500 labor charge is way too extreme. I'm rating them a 3, only because the tech was very helpful, but I would have rated them much lower because of an obvious price gouging practice that this company uses, which was extremely disappointing. Made appt and took day 1/2'day off from work only for them to text me after 6 pm to tell me the technician isn't coming because he got caught up in HVAC emergencies -AC not working -IT IS MARCH ( not July ) and low 70's outside it is not a sweltering or even hot outside. I had no AC last July when it was brutal out I had to wait 2 days before they showed up. Toilet Replacement: I called Preferred Home Services with a toilet issue of smell and slight leakage around the base. Tony (their plumber) came to my house on time that day and inspected the toilet (even took it apart) to find root problem was it was never installed properly and my flange was 4 inches below the surface of the floor. He was able to quote me a fair Price (working together with Jeaneé and the service manager) on the repair and educate me on what to look for in a replacement toilet as that would be more cost effective. Well new unit in June which broke. Got replaced in July. Company wanted to repair after waiting "for parts". Got new unit to replace the new unit. Here we are in December and believe it or not broken again. Paid way to much money for work to have broken unit. Paid for preferred list that does nothing. Waiting on parts yet again. Forget getting anyone to acknowledge issues. Only plus so far is the techs are polite when they come. read more

They say if you are a member you don't have to pay a service fee, however you have to pay a trouble shooting fee, which is just another name for a service fee. They don't always show up. Writing this review on behalf of my retired mother. They took advantage of an older woman who lives alone and then tried to do it again when their shotty work got called out. Don't use this company! Unfortunately my mother's hot water heat broke and her two children do not live in the same state and could not help. I give my mother credit, she shopped around and found a company she thought she could trust to install a tankless water heater. New water heater works fine, but 2.5yrs later my mother goes to sell her home and the home inspector hits her on incorrect wiring for the hot water heater. Turns out they didn't wire the new unit to its own breaker, they just connected it via an extension cord to an outlet. When she called to have the issue corrected, the company first told her to pay $300 just to have someone look at the issue, then after some back and forth, the manager, Jamaal, said he would do her a favor and only charge her $300 to fix their mistake and add the necessary breaker. This was after Jamaal said that even though the manufacturer said it needed a dedicated breaker, it really didn't need one, but wouldn't put that in writing. My mom was feed up and said she would have to reach out to BBB and a lawyer because this only an issue because they didn't do the contracted work correctly/to code. Our hot water heater started leaking yesterday. We called Preferred to come take a look. They sent their technician Revlon. He was so awesome!! He explained everything to my husband and I. We recently moved and had several unrelated questions about our toilet and kitchen faucet. He gave us his professional opinion, wasn't rushing us, and showed tremendous patience. Pricing is very expensive. The workmanship was excellent however I was quoted for one plug said by a switch over top was $640. I had two GFI switches replaced in my panel box both of which I supplied plus one motion detector to be installed in place of a switch again I supplied I paid $150 for the labor. I consider that to be pretty expensive given the fact I supplied everything and it took about 20 minutes to do everything the firm, however, is very professional and the work done by the electrician. read more

Our water heater kicked the bucket and we called preferred home services as they were the best rated on Yelp. The technician came to the door wearing a mask and was very professional. We had another contractor come quote the work and they were very competitive. They even sent a text with the tech's picture so we could be comfortable knowing who it was. After a short conversation, we agreed to terms and I asked when he could do it , he said "now good?" Lol! They have a great system, if they need to replace any parts they have a another person come bring the parts while they do the removal. In the past we have had really good experiences with them and have recommended them to our friends, although they have always been expensive. They came out the other day to install a system to keep our drain tube from clogging up and do a checkup on all three of our units. The tech that inspected our system told us our all in one unit they installed 8 years ago was due to be replaced and the warranty on it was no longer valid. He said all in ones are only good for 5-8 years. I understand they could have shortened lifespans for typical units that are 15-20 years but come on. He then said if we were to choose to keep it we would need some work and quoted us for it. The day after that same unit was not cooling and the fan kept reversing polarity, spinning clockwise and immediately switching to counterclockwise. We tried to have them come back out but couldn't get to us until Monday so we called another company we have used here and there. They came out and reset the control board and it started working. We were also told our system was under parts warranty until 2027 so the quotes we got are obviously not accurate. I'm not saying any foul play was afoot but the thought crossed my mind when thot happened the day after they tried to convince me we needed a new $15,000 system. Some of the things installed incorrectly I feel I should point out was done by them. They have replaced two of our three units, water heater, ducting, and some minor plumbing. Are they incentivizing techs to find issues to try and sell new units? WARNING: Do not let them keep your card on file! We had Preferred come do two repairs before we moved out of our home in late May, one charged to my wife's credit card, the other charged to mine. The card she paid with was then charged $1438.00 for a service at that address 15 days after we moved out. She called to complain and they refunded the money saying they charged the wrong card. They then charged the card I used the same $1438.00. I called and they said they couldn't find my name or phone number in the system. They said that address was associated with someone who was not me, and that they saw the service done that day in June. The customer service rep said she would contact accounting and have them call me in 24 hours. 4 days later, they still haven't contacted me or refunded my card. I have called the credit card company and reported it as fraud. Why would you not ensure the homeowner's name is on the card being charged and that they can give the security code on the back of the card?? read more

First a little background: When we bought our house six years ago, the HVAC system had been replaced only a few months before. We were really excited about that because we thought (wrongly) that we wouldn't have any issues with it for a very long time. Not long after moving in though, the problems started. The outside coil was leaking and had to be replaced, something else was leaking, a fan in the attic went out, etc. I actually had called Preferred out in 2017 when the fan went out but went with a different company because it was under warranty and the other company was just cheaper. At that time, Lucas came out and was great. It just came down to the money. Two weeks ago our unit stopped cooling. Due to mild temps, we put off calling someone out. Finally decided to this week, initially calling the company that replaced the fan and then calling Preferred for a second opinion. Lucas came out again which was great because he is personable and we got a good, no-bs vibe from him. Unfortunately, our unit had no charge and little to no refrigerant which means there's a serious leak, likely with the upstairs coil, and it was going to be costly. After all the problems we have had, we decided to get an estimate on replacing the whole system. The next day, we met with Robert (ask him about his horses!). He was awesome, straight-forward and helped us determine what unit would work best for us. After some discussion, my husband and I decided going with Preferred was the best thing for us due to their warranties and guarantees. That was Saturday, Monday morning (today) the crew (Josh, Curtis, Jacob and the new guy whose name I missed) showed up early (btw, they send you a text when they're on the way with a pic and bio of the tech which is cool) and got right to work dismantling the old system and installing the new one. Chad, the install manager, stopped by too to check up on things. Everyone was really nice and professional. They all wear covers on their shoes and had a drop cloth for the carpet. Curtis installed a touch screen thermostat and gave us a quick, yet informative, tutorial on how to use it. The guys did a great job and we are really excited about having a properly installed and guaranteed system. DISHONEST!!! Icalled Preffered Home Services to switching out am old tankless water heater with a new one. They gave me a quote of $8,000!!! I was working from home so I googled pricing while the Preferred person was sitting across the table from me and the HIGH end of the range listed online was $4,000. I told them "No thanks!" and the service person walked outside and "spoke to his supervisor " and came back in with a quote of $4,000. Nothing in the estimate changed except the price! Had our water heater replaced today. While our technician did a great job, whoever was in charge of getting him the new water heater delivered dropped the ball. They brought two separate units that were not usable and he ended up going and getting it himself at Lowe's. 10/10 would recommend William. He was great, it just took all day because of the issues. The tech was here for hours trying to fix our heat then Said had to order a part to fix it. Ended up being charged over $2200 just before Christmas and then our warranty company would not cover it. He replaced the appliance and all pipes that connected to it, he also installed a 2*4 as a shim to make sure the sink and the counter top were connected. I hired Preferred Home Services to replace the old electrical wiring in my house and to replace the 100 amp service with 200 amp service. While the new outlets, switches and breaker box look great, I was surprised to discover that after they said they were done I had no lights in the garage, the outside outlets did not work, the lights in the closets did not work, the door bell did not work and the light on the back porch did no† work. One week after they finished I am still finding bits of copper and wire nuts scattered about my house. I am shocked that a supervisor did not inspect the work before I got home from vacation.
