Her safety away at college pushed us to sign up, and what a difference it has made for all of us in different ways! John and his team will help strengthen skills like problem solving under pressure, being aware, being authoritative, identifying and evaluating threats, protecting and defending yourself and others, and so much more! I had not trained in martial arts or any fighting system, so I came in as a total novice. Several years ago, I took a 90-minute women's self-defense class at another facility. Coming here, I realized self-defense is a lot more extensive than I thought (i.e. defending from a knife from the front versus behind, defending a side choke hold versus a straight punch, performing a gun disarm from the chest versus from the back, etc). This system teaches self-defense in dozens of different situations, so you feel empowered to handle different circumstances--including single and multiple attackers. This isn't a one-and-done type of training; you will learn so much, and the more you come, the more it will become second nature so you can learn to handle dynamic situations efficiently and safely. John and his team made me and my family feel very welcome from the start, and we quickly felt like family at the facility. The team is very generous with their time and patience to ensure students are absorbing the training by adjusting instruction in terms you can relate to. John constantly asks for feedback--further showing how much they genuinely care. His other instructors (like Sam, the Muay Thai Boxer and Jempy) attend other classes outside of their own, so they share their expertise across classes. You go at your own pace, so you go to as many or as few classes as you want. There are plenty of classes to choose from! It is also great how the fitness classes are complementary to the type of self-defense and combat training being taught at the facility. Shout out to Tyrone (boxing instructor) for his awesome Combat Fitness class! Lastly, we have been impressed with how many students have been training with John and his team for 5+ years, plus how many families attend. That speaks volumes! On top of that, other students who have been there a while are very nice to help and encourage newcomers like me. It is a strong family atmosphere. Try them out!

The instructors, facilities and scheduling are excellent. Their prices are exceptionally low, which makes Furia a hidden gem in this area. There's no contract requirement, no sign up fees, and adults aren't forced to buy an over-priced branded uniform (all this is incredibly rare for a martial arts school). The kids uniform is inexpensive. Furia is also exceptional in that they offer flexible plans, depending on your desired usage. You can choose as little as one day per week (lowest cost), or as much as "unlimited" (still comparatively low), or anything in-between. In the past I have varied my monthly plan based on how busy I was going to be. The facilities have a lot of offer. They have plenty of mat space, an MMA-style octagon, a workout space with weights and equipment (a big plus for me), a separate lobby and large viewing gallery for parents, and a refrigerator to keep your drinks cold. All together, it's a great way to try out the studio for a few months at no obligation. Although Furia has other programs, like adult kickboxing and boxing, I only have experience with two programs. Here are my reviews of each: Adult Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ): Furia has 7 adult classes per week, spread out Monday through Friday evenings. Classes include both gi (the traditional uniform) and "no gi." They have 4 different BJJ instructors, including a black belt and two brown belts. What I like about this setup is that you get exposed to different teaching styles, and you have the option of choosing which class meets your needs best. If you're interested in MMA, you should definitely check out the no-gi class. The instructor has a strong base in wrestling and MMA coaching, and there's even a pro-fighter who attends that class (don't worry, he goes easy on beginners!). Most classes are 1 hour and 15 minutes. I love that length because I think a 1-hour class is a little too short. Extra bonus: Furia has a partnership with Alliance BJJ in Pearland, which lets you visit that gym if you're ever in the area. Alliance has morning and afternoon classes, so it complements Furia's schedule well. Kid's American Karate / MMA: Jason is the owner and head coach of the Karate/Kickboxing program, and I can tell he put a lot of thought into the kid's curriculum and teaching methodology. Most schools teach the various styles in separate classes. Jason's program stands out for integrating different martial arts into a single program. Kids will learn karate kicks, mixed with boxing-style punching, along with wrestling-style takedowns and Brazilian jiu-jitsu for when they're rolling on the ground. There are a bunch of reasons why I like this format. First, he is developing well rounded martial artists. Second, since the different styles involve different movements, the kids are getting a full body workout in class. Third, since the class "changes gears" when they switch styles, the kids don't get burned out the way they do in other schools. My kid used to take a BJJ-only class at a different gym and I could tell his classmates would start tuning out and getting bored after 20 minutes of similar drills. The gear changes at the Furia program keeps the students mentally engaged and prevents them from getting overwhelmed. Fourth, Jason's program is excellent for anti-bullying and self-defense since it gives the kids experience in all ranges of confrontation (kicking, punching, clinching, and ground). They do a lot of light sparring and I can tell the kids really enjoy that. Most importantly for kids, Jason teaches perseverance, safety, self-control, respect and confidence, and he does it without the excessive formalism and ritual found in a lot of traditional martial arts schools. He has an excellent rapport with children, being both down-to-earth yet strong, and he is able to speak in a way that engages and motivates them. Overall, I highly recommend you try out Furia for yourself and/or your child.

He has learned so much in the last two months of taking classes. We come twice a week, Monday and Wednesday from 6:30pm to 7:15pm. If you miss one of those days, they have a make up class on Saturday mornings. They have several different classes to get into, the starting age is 5yr old. They have a family class that you can take with your children as well. This location also has a Demo Team and Sport Poomsae! They all compete with Master Kim's help and guidance. Master Kim is a 7th Dan Black Belt in the traditional Korean martial art of Taekwondo. He has a Master of Arts degree in Physical Education and Teaching, specializing in Taekwondo. He is also has a degree in physical education and teaching! He is exceptionally talented. They offer different specials here too. When we came in it was $49.99 for the first month and it came with the uniform. Kind of like a trial before you spent the full amount on something. My son ended up loving it, so we signed up for a full year. They automatically withdraw the payments which is nice, one less thing to worry about. Stephanie up front is great and very knowledgeable. We really like her! They are also very patient with my 3 year old. shes not old enough to take the class yet but they allow her to stand close to the entrance, and let her follow along. Shes still not able to concentrate and focus enough to do the class, but its nice they let her see what they're doing. She only follows along for maybe 5 min but its a start. She'll be more than ready once she turns five.

Tiger's Den calls itself "shotokan" karate. Trust me, this is NOT shotokan, much less martial arts…read moretraining. It is nothing more than a "black belt factory". Zuhair basically rewards students who can simply yell loudly while doing a terrible punch or kick. A couple of warning signs to prove to you that Zuhair's karate is fake. For starters, who only has his students participate in tournaments against his own dojos. Legit karate schools will compete in AAKF, SKIFF, JKA, or any other LEGIT karate organization. Also, I don't understand how you can promote a student to black belt if they don't even know half the katas they are suppose to know? I use to attend his classes, and I will say that Zuhair is a fake. His karate teaching is terrible. He charges you a fortune for sub-par teaching and uses the excuse that karate will, magically, improve your child's discipline, make them better people, get better grades, and find the cure for cancer. Karate is a legit martial arts. Despite what MMA junkies say, you can honestly use real karate to defend yourself. Sadly, dojos like Zuhair make karate look like some sort of daycare crap. My advice to you, as a recognized shotokan karate black belt, shop around for a karate dojo (or instructor) who is actually recognized by a legit karate organization.
