From the beginning Manuel was challenging to get ahold of (no responses on emails mostly). Work started a week later than we had agreed on and Initially the project was supposed to take 3 days - demo, install, finishing- and it was suggested that it could be done in one week. The project started September 25 2024 and was finally finished November 15, almost 2 months. During demo we had to ask them to stop because they did not tape off the space and spread huge amounts of dust throughout our house that we ended up needing to do lead and aesbestos testing to move forward (not to mention, I had to take a day off of work to clean up the mess created). We had to call and text and basically beg them to send people out to finish the work and we could tell we were a very low priority- mostly working Saturdays, canceling multiple times after committing to dates, unwilling to commit to days until a day or two in advance, etc. He pretended he would work around our schedule but if that was the case, this work would have NEVER been completed. I canceled plans 3 times during this process to make myself available to get this work done. After demo, I think they realized this job was more complicated than originally anticipated but instead of telling us that, Manuel just kept us guessing, unsure if the timeline had changed- he did not want to communicate specifics with us which we would have really appreciated and welcomed. We learned quickly that they were not particularly respectful of our space so we began taping up our own plastic space dividers to keep dust and fumes out of the rest of our living space. The workers were very nice and I believe the issue is with management rather than the workers themselves. In the end, the work is nice enough which is why I give 2 stars instead of 1. The finished work was absolutely not worth the headache and displacement we experienced to get it done. It was a truly painful experience. I have other cabinetry projects I would like to do but will absolutely not be hiring MJ Custom cabinetry again to do the work.

Alex, the owner, is a genuinely talented carpenter with a great eye for design. His angled shelving solution for the shoe closet was really clever. We were very particular about measurements and custom details, and Alex delivered exactly what we asked for. Even when we requested adjustments after installation had already begun, he found solutions and made everything work for us. The installers were really professional, detail-oriented, and respectful of our home. They were very organized and worked cleanly. In addition to the new closets, Alex helped us resolve a few issues with our existing kitchen cabinets and island (done by another company). Not only was she very quick and responsive, she also went out of her way to get answers with regard to led lighting, delivery stock, etc. I have called in before and i spoke to someone who couldn't provide any answers related to my order and continued to note that there was no way of knowing if they have my order. I even asked what do you know? Do i have half my orders? Is it in stock currently? I am picking up the order tomorrow, what can you tell me? And i was constantly provided with unhelpful non answers. Had we had to deal with this individual, we would not rate cabinet city so highly as there was not even a let me check with warehouse (right across in the adjacent building). There was basically a lack of knowledge or willingness to help (instead of saying i am not sure but i will find out, i get it there is no way of knowing). I am thankful Sherry was our go to person and i am also thankful to the warehouse staff who stepped up to help while the person behind the desk was ignoring customers and not even informing of a wait or someone going on break. Instead someone from the warehouse who picked my order came to me directly to help without me asking. Although every place has their pros and cons, i would say that this place is very lucky to have people like Sherry and the warehouse operators. In terms of product, i am not yet able to comment on the received materials as they are still in their boxes, but my wife and i do love the options at cabinet city especially compared to other companies out there. Pricing is more than fair as well. Picking up the order was also very straightforward and easy. So overall, the positives simply outweigh the negatives. I also like that they are a small business - I felt my project was important to them even though it was not the "biggest" (especially since I broke it into 2 phases for my own budget planning). The good news is they fixed all the problems ... well, mostly. The bad news is that there were just so many problems, causing endless delays. Staff was not available; planning was improvised and sloppy (requiring work to be redone again and again); work quality was indifferent. In the end I had to finish the clean-up, and I'm still fishing loose steel screws out of the cabinet shelves. Delays turned the promised 3-day job into 8 working days spread over two weeks, leaving us with no kitchen and a house mess for much longer than we planned. Despite that, Andrei was able to scribe and fit these cabinets into our old 1920's home which did not have the straightest walls to work from as a base. Not only did he focus intently on the task at hand, installing our cabinets, but he left the space in as good as or better condition upon finishing, all the while with a smile and a collaborative mindset. Any time we presented a question or suggestion it was met with a kind response and a will to figure it out. Even if you aren't a person that feels tapped in to details, you will still see the effects of a person who loves what they do, and can project that passion into the finished product.
