I had a professional haircut before my first marriage in 1990 and my second marriage in 2020. I had back surgery in July 2024 and was unable to cut my hair any longer. My wife has massage therapy at Merrimac Court in Prince Frederick which is on the second floor above the barber shop. She convinced me to see a professional barber after I was released from the Johns Hopkins hospital in July. She took me straight to Mike's House of Style. I had my hair cut by the owner, Shawn Harrod. Shawn cut my hair into a perfect stylish fade better than anything I could have done myself at home! I look much more handsome and attractive now! Shawn is an amazing barber! He is also a very spiritual man, a proud graduate of Bowie State and a supporter of HBCU's! I love supporting my people and Black Owned Businesses. When they were clear I wasn't too sure on what to do. There is a computer where you "sign in". The lady who checked out the people in front of me looked at me and didn't say one word. She immediately went back to her station and disappeared. Another lady who saw me standing there looking clueless started talking to a blonde girl with short hair while pointing me out. The blonde girl was sitting there not very motivated. The lady that was pointing nicely said "Just check in at the computer and someone will be with you". Apparently you have to put your name phone number and email in if you are a first timer at that location. I'm guessing once you are in the computer, and you have registered at least once, you just have to put your phone number? I'll never know because I ain't going back pffft. Anyway the blonde girl comes to the front and looks at me and says. "You ready?" Kinda like she's annoyed. Not even a Hi or a hello. Just a You ready. I sat down in the barber chair and I swear this was the FASTEST haircut in my life I ever got. I was in that chair for about 8-10 minutes. She pulled the smock off me and I was kinda shocked. This isn't terribly abnormal for barbershops outside of military locations. They're used to cutting hair in a certain style, and any deviation just doesn't compute. In terms of my most recent experience, I came in for a haircut and asked for a trim around my ears and a taper. My barber then cut ALL of my hair and gave me a high and tight. Incredible frustrating how that panned out. Second, I asked for a beard trim and to NOT touch my mustache, and somehow he managed to damn near shaved off my whole mustache. So in conclusion, I went from looking like an IPA loving hipster, to a construction worker mad that someone scuffed my Tim's at the McDonalds. Lastly, for some odd reasons the barbers faced myself and another customer directly at each other and it was incredibly awkward. I wasn't sure if I should f*ck him with my eyes or close them and pray to god my hair wouldn't make me look like the next Calvert county domestic case. I have had haircuts for years across in many countries and I am somewhat of a fan of old fashioned barbershops. Small businesses are my favored places and they usually treat you like a neighbor and a friend not just a number. But it truly depends on the person who provides the service.
