Currently this clean, open location is a hub for Covid vaccines for seniors. The staff is solid, the vast gym hall has spread out seating for safe and quick treatments. There are working water fountains and spotless restrooms. This was a safe and good experience today. There is a private parking lot adjacent to the building. Loved that there were 4 spots open when I pulled in today at 12:30 pm. The Community center has been a Voting location, hosted basketball tournaments, had naturalization ceremonies, seminars, health and exercise classes and social get togethers. A Universal center with multipurpose functionality!! I did not see anything closely resembling "Brownsville is the murder capital of New York" or "Brownsville has consistently held one of the highest poverty and crime rates of any neighborhood in New York City" today at or around this location or at the restaurant that served us a memorable meal a mile away. Long story short, I was giving a few options and will follow up next Wednesday for assistance towards my search. Overall my experience was comfortable, friendly, professional and I left with hope. It's like dealing with a bunch of teenagers who do not want to be held accountable and not want to own up to their mistakes. They do not stand by advertised requirements and will arbitrarily dismiss volunteers when they have exceeded their quota but only after volunteers (and families) have committed time and good faith to the event. There is a serious lack of transparency with capturing hours and someone really needs to conduct a thorough audit of their system. Save yourselves the grief and trouble and volunteer with another organization that is worthier and willing to treat volunteers with respect and not like disposable garbage.
