Words…read morecan't express the joy and excitement of finding such an amazing place that had everything you would want compared to owning without the maintenance and responsibilities. Amenities like garden plots that were tilled yearly, a refreshing pool open all year, well maintained gas grills with tanks readily available when they were empty, beautifully maintained grounds, and a wonderful dog park with artificial turf. The other thing that made us so elated was that we could beautify and decorate our place the way we wanted to make it truly our home if appropriate and didn't upset the neighbors. Unfortunately, in the past few years all that has changed. Well the pool is still open all year, for now anyways. We are only allowed a mat and a wreath for decorations, the grounds are no longer beautiful or properly kept, the grills are not maintained and tanks are always empty, the garden is a joke, dog park is in disrepair, dog receptacles are constantly overflowing, and there is always litter and dog waste all over the complex. What's so disheartening is there are many residents like us that love and care about our home and have sent requests to address these issues only to have them discarded or marked completed when nothing was done. I believe the majority of the blame falls on Blue Ridge Companies, who own and manage the property, but it seems that the office and/or maintenance staff either no longer cares or are forced not to care about our needs The Orchard Apartment Homes are listed as luxury living and when we first moved in I would totally agree with that statement. However, not anymore. I encourage friends, family, and other residents who see this post to please share to bring our beloved complex back to the way it was. If anyone from the media is interested in learning more, I would be happy to share more details since there is so much more to this story.

We recently moved into a retirement community and the landscaping around our cottage was pretty scraggly. We decided to wait a year to see how it looked in all seasons. Unimpressed after that time, and at the recommendation of neighbors, we contacted Eli for suggestions on low-maintenance native plants that are drought tolerant, deer resistant, low maintenance and pollinators. That's a long list, but Eli put together a proposal that met all of our requirements. Based on earlier experiences with other landscape architects, we wanted to avoid over-planting, but Eli anticipated that and his selection of both appropriate quantity, and size-specific cultivars will ensure that our new plantings won't overgrow their bed-spaces. When he arrived to begin work, we were delighted with the quality of the plants that were on his truck. All were robust, full, and shapely (especially a Weeping Redbud that is a focal point in our front yard). He and a single helper meticulously cleaned and prepared beds, amended soil (as appropriate) and carefully planted everything. They re-used the best specimens of our existing plants, effectively integrating everything into a consistent and coherent whole. When the…read morewinter storm of Jan 2022, took a tree out, obstructing our driveway, they came over very quickly and made our driveway passible and then returned and took down the badly damaged tree. We have known of them and their good community service for years. We also chose them because they are licensed and insured - and not everyone is. Later, I asked for an estimate about other trees that had been damaged by the storm and by neighbors trees that had fallen on some of our trees. They gave me an estimate that was clear and explained exactly what they would do. It took a bit of time for us to save up to have this work done. When we let them know we were ready, they were here the next day to begin prep work. With their very busy schedule I know we lucked out. From start to finish, they were professional, friendly, efficient beyond measure, and thorough. They were able to get all nine trees down in one day. They even came blew any Ieft over saw dust out of the driveway. During their work here, they checked in by phone (to let me know they'd be back to tidy, to ask about relocating vehicles, etc.) All the men were very polite and courteous. They clearly knew exactly what they were doing. As if that wasn't enough, the wood we had taken down will become part of their charity, Start A Spark, which provides free wood to families in need who heat with wood burning stoves. While they were reasonable in the timeframe for the estimate (within a week), we waited for 2 weeks before reconnecting with them them about getting scheduled since we had heard nothing. At that time, they told us that they were scheduling us for Nov 25th. That time has come and gone - I just reached out to them today (Dec 2nd) - a week later - and they informed me that tomorrow (Dec 3rd) was the makeup day in case the 25th didn't work out. Problem is, WE weren't kept in the loop on any of their scheduling/changes. They responded when I texted, but the response consisted of more apologies, just like the first time when they neglected to keep us informed. We were looking for a partnership to help us manage our tree population. Now we have to go through the research process all over again to find someone reliable, which apparently, Metcalf is not.
