The fairway is probably 60-70 feet below you and stretches out towards the tree line. The par 3 2nd comes back a little to your left, and then you see the third hole as it wraps around water just below. Absolutely stunning. It's a tough track and I would say is fun from every set of tees (black, blue, white, gold, and even the red tees). Water comes into play on about a dozen holes. Highlights are the first tee box/first hole (it's a reachable par 5), the third as it wraps around a pond, the second half of the par 5 5th hole, the eighth hole looks like it's on top of the world, the views from the 10th tee box, the thirteenth hole (a brute of a par 5), and some of the best par 4s in Virginia (holes 15, 16, and 18). I stayed in the smaller of the two lodges that overlook the 18th green. We had a suite with a master with a king and another room with two double beds. Lots of space, two bathrooms, a kitchen, and a porch. It was also the cleanest room I may have ever stayed in. Some of the nicest views were from the porch that included the storm that rolled through at night and the fog that followed in the morning. There is only one restaurant on property and the food was excellent. Love that the dessert menu was never fixed. I had an ice cream cookie sandwich that was excellent. The people here truly make this place special. Whoever cleaned our room deserves a raise. Bo (the head pro) and Sherrie in the pro shop are maybe the nicest people I have met playing golf, and that is saying something. The wait staff and grounds crew were all extremely nice as well. I know there is a 5-star resort down the road that I visited for a bit, but I would much rather be here every day of the week. (Not saying I wouldn't turn down a free stay and play at the other place.) Needless to say this is now on my list for places to have a relaxing weekend getaway filled with great golf.

This is a great course for what it is…read more What is it you might ask? A very inexpensive, beginner friendly, experience. No frills. Outside of two holes, not much in the way of challenges of water hazards to hit over. No sand at all. Most fairways are quite wide, and there is no real rough at all. You're hitting into fields which used to be pastureland. There are some woods to contend with if you go way off track, but for a golfer who can usually land in the 80-90 range on a standard municipal course, I absolutely shredded this place with a 74. Drove, or was within easy chip distance of 4 greens, and had a legit eagle opportunity which I lipped out. All par 5s were very reachable, on this particularly sun-scorched and drought ridden conditions we played in. Your ball had so much roll, it shortened an already short course. By the way, it is a 9 hole course. Most holes do have two tee boxes to play a full 18. The good: So inexpensive that you can't really complain. 20 bucks to ride 18. The greens are absolutely in fantastic condition, even during a drought. Which if you are going to pick something to excel at, that is the thing in my opinion. Not generally a crowd to contend with, tee-times are not needed Come as you are, not even the most remote semblance of dress code. Very beginner friendly. Friendly owners on site. The bad (if it weren't so cheap): Golf carts are in very rough shape, but functional, mostly. There is one hill you probably can't climb with two in the cart. There is another downhill which you likely won't be able to stop, so pay attention and drive carefully. No cart paths, signs, course map, anything. Better go for the first time with someone who has been before. Bring a range finder. No on course amenities like ball washers or water coolers. The clubhouse barn does sell basic snacks and drinks. I didn't see a sign... but GPS took me to the right place. All in all. I enjoyed playing here with my friends who are just getting started with the game. Plenty of opportunity to coach them and have fun in a no pressure situation. I would come back, and those who set their expectations on the price will love it.

They are family-owned and operated and some of the friendliest people you will meet. The staff were so patient with all the first timers in our group and we had lots of laughs. Some were more timid/cautious than others so they showed us how to apply more brake if we needed to slow down for whatever reason. But if you wanted to go fast, you certainly had the opportunity. 2 guides helped 8 people so we were really well-cared for. Also, the guides learned all of our names by the third zipline and it felt like we were hanging out with a group of friends. The cost is very reasonable for what you get - go through Groupon or simply mention the deal - and they will honor that price. There is also the added bonus of the location - being very close to Hanging Rock State Park, you can go and make a day of being outdoors and enjoying nature. I know I will be recommending them to my friends.
