A stitch in time! So grateful to find this well-stocked Fabric store along St. Charles Avenue in Central City. Since it's Mardi Gras season, the need for fabric increases exponentially. I needed about 1/2-yard of silk to supplement the back of my formal ball gown. The owner, who was such a nice gentleman, took my dress and went to and fro, looking to find just the right color, weight, and texture of fabric to match my sequined ball gown. After about 10 minutes of looking through dozens and dozens of bolts of material, he found that "just right" fabric. After comparing it once more, we both agreed and he quickly cut the fabrIc, accepted my cash, and packaged my goods. So I was going to spend quite a bit of money with them and ordered a fabric sample. Alas it was the size of a playing card making it impossible to know the pattern of the full fabric. Really a cheap approach if you want to sell merchandise. I'll look elsewhere. read more

Great fabric, some gems, some frogs, a little bit of everything. That's to say in and out of the budget. Hopefully we will get some better fabric stores with more to offer in New Orleans, with a wider variety of patterns in the bold and beautiful array of multicolor heaven. This place was lovely and calm but not enough pop, it was more along the lines with old and safe but still nice. Maybe they should go outside the box a bit with their selections. My review gives 4 stars because of the quality of the fabric alone however, like previously noted the color combo selection needs to be broadened IMO.. read more

I literally could hear the angels sing when I stepped in to this store. I have been sewing since my teens, which now has been over 50 years. I know a good specialty fabric store when I am in one. I have been to the stores in the Garment District in NYC and Promenade Fabrics is far superior then any of them. Especially in price, selection, and customer service! There is nothing in the NYC garment district that comes even close to the Southern hospitality you are encased in while shopping here. If you don't see what you're looking for then ask! I'm not a gambling person but I'd lay some serious money they'll find it for you. They have the most exquisite fabrics I have ever seen along with vintage French lace and ribbons, and exotic buttons. What appears to be a small store just goes on and on with wonderful treasures of which you would be very hard pressed to find anywhere else in the USA. Hector, the establishment creator and owner, is the most quintessential Southern gentleman and he greets every customer who comes through the shop door. I am originally from Mobile, Alabama and my encounter with Hector harkened back to the days of personal service without any overbearing selling. He wanted me to have a good time while I was there. He showed me fabrics that literally brought tears to my eyes to see. He made me feel at ease asking to see one right after the other of the specialty fabrics located at the back of the store. These fabrics are handled only by the store staff. For a reason. They are delicate, actually very delicate, and exquisite doesn't begin to describe their beauty. (Think Halle Berry's dress when she won the Oscar in 2002). They have high end fabrics from Dolce and Gabbana and many other designers. If you are a seamstress or simply a fabric hoarder (which I think I have become over the years) then I can't even begin to recommend this store highly enough if you are ever in NOLA and have the opportunity to visit. I wholeheartedly agree with each of the other reviews. Do not go in without some serious cash or a good amount of available credit on your credit card as this is a seamstress' temptress of fabrics!! I stopped in to see if they had some elastic material I could use to make a tutu for Halloween. The store was quiet with a only a few customers in the back area. It felt a little cramped with all the different fabrics and sewing accessories in stock, but this exactly how I would expect any other fabric store. This older gentlemen assisted me and immediately found what I needed. He was SO sweet and patient. Best part: I was short 10 cents and really didn't want to charge $2.45 on my credit card and the man just told me not to worry about it. That kinda thing just doesn't happen anymore! A fantastic selection of rich, supple fabrics for clothing design. There are name brand fabrics here so that your runway inspirations can come to life and mirror the original. There are fine wools, bemberg linings and silks for special occasions and suits. There are stretch cottons, lace, and notions. They do not stock performance stretch products for swimwear or dancewear. They had a few remnants only. It's not a complaint but I do want to be clear about what's available to minimize misunderstandings. I categorize a misunderstanding as a help review that misses the forest of fabric because a single variety of fabric is missing. Come for the high quality fabric and service. The owners are also incredible and very polite. If I asked for something, they made it happen. I was not rushed or harassed. I was shown pieces of 4ply and 6ply silk with such quality that I know (with 100% certainty) I will mail order from them. The owner cut a sample and explained that I should mail that sample back with my request and they will make sure they ship the correct product to my home. If you sew apparel you won't be disappointed. Yet another reason to return to New Orleans. read more

I came in on vacation as it was my birthday -- what a place to buy yourself a birthday present! I got three yards of a gorgeous rayon for a 1940s dress. But there were so many things I wanted to get! Imported wools, silks and linens, a nice range of seersuckers... Exquisite high end fabrics. I have been there once. 1992 or 1993. Have never forgotten it and still have the fabric I purchased. I made a wrap for formal occasions that I wear once or twice a year and am always asked about it. The other piece I will eventually use, perhaps for a clutch. It is my favorite textile ever, black and silver, silk and metal. I have shopped for fabric in SF, NY, Paris, Barcelona and Rome: nothing rivals it. It was 75 per yard and my only regret was that I only could afford 2 yards. The service and expertise and patience of the staff was like none other. The fabrics were amazing and memorable. So glad it still exists. I recall that two long time customers were there WITH THEIR PERSONAL DRESSMAKERS!! And yet, I was treated just the same. Magical. read more

I am an occasional customer at fabric stores. I was looking for material to line a cigar humidor to make a jewelry box. This place not only had a wide selection, but a helpful and patient staff even though I made it evident I was buying a miniscule amount of material. While browsing around I was impressed with the wide selection of fabrics. The display and organization is not as evident as in a big-box fabric store, but more like participating in an archeological dig. The help of the staff is critical, and fortunately they are knowledfeable, patient and professional. This place looked full of customers who were fabric aficianados. I was able to work through my fear and come out happy with my choice. Service people knew the fabric and what it was like to work with it, including tips. I went there to find upholstery fabric. While that's not what they carry, when I explained what the fabric would be used for, they first made sure I had the names of THREE upholstery fabric shops, and then showed me some possibilities in their shop. The gorgeous linen denim and high-style silk that I found were absolutely perfect for the job. Promenade is a true find. They work with the film industry and fashion professionals, and yet are incredibly patient with folks like me who aren't quite sure what they're looking for. The owners were very helpful even though I didn't know quite what I wanted. Promenade Fine Fabrics is a wonderful store. I was visiting New Orleans last week and came upon this store. I walked in and was in fabric heaven but unfortunately had no room to in my suitcase or carry on luggage. The quality of the merchandise is outstanding, and I live in New York, near the garment district. There are no stores in the garment district that has the same quality fabric as Promenade. When I visit New Orleans in February, I will have an empty suitcase just so I can shop at Promenade. I just discovered their Etsy shop and it also looks fantastic. Time to shop! read more

There is no better place to source for fabrics. They ship world wide work very closely with dressmakers, interior designers, individual shoppers and A list costume designers. They only sell what you are in need of and never substitute shipments. So if you are in a tizzy and need to fill a requirement ask for Herbert or his son to help you. Possibly the rudest experience I have ever had in a retail environment. I went in to look for fabric to have a custom dress made and the gentleman in the store was so ridiculously awful to me that I could not believe it. At first completely dismissive, and then very condescending as we looked at fabrics in the color group that i needed, I was very uncomfortable. I complimented him on a designer fabric displayed and he asked me if I had not seen the sign...that customers were not to touch the fabric and if I did, I would be asked to buy a minimum of 5 yards. Perhaps he meant to be sarcastic but it was not funny and I would not spent a nickel in this establishment because of how he spoke to me. I will fly to New York and get my fabric to get my dress made and will never step foot in Promenade Fine Fabrics again. Nice products. VERY rude service. read more
