Having been to many chippies and late night kebab shops, I've had some good and bad experiences with drunken take-out. Recently, I've been stopping off at Heaton's Pizza House. Sat on Heaton Moor Road, and a mere stone's throw from several of the nearest watering holes, it's certainly convenient for anyone who needs a hearty portion of carbs to fend off the impending hangover. The service area is well-lit, and the staff have always been friendly when I've visited. The offerings are pretty standard for a takeaway of this type: burgers, pizza, fried chicken, kebabs etc... So far, I've only had the cheesy chips with garlic mayo. A large portion of these is, I think, around £3.50 which is good value considering that one gets shared between my girlfriend and I. In terms of quality, I would say that "it's chips - how can you really get it wrong?!" but believe me I've been to places where they've been able to do just that. Thankfully, Heaton's Pizza House ain't one of them. The chips, though really they're french fries, have always been hot and crispy, with plenty of cheese and decent garlic mayo. As a takeaway, they also do delivery on any order over £9 though I'm not sure what their delivery radius is. The reason I'm only giving them an A-OK 3/5 is because, frankly, I think I need to order more broadly from their menu when I'm sober to make a better opinion. That's right, proper fish and chips. Real fat chips, mushy peas, gravy, battered fish fingers, all wrapped up neatly and smelling pungently of vinegar. My Baa Bar companion, the blonde, introduced me to this little treasure, and I've never looked back. The downside is that it might be open until ridiculous o' clock at weekends, but not during weekdays. Many a time have we trekked there from afar, finding it shut, realising it's a Tuesday. Maybe not enough people would go, but they forget, chippy food is cheap, and students (and writers) like cheap, and students (and writers) are out during the week... the maths does itself. But never mind, just grab it while you can. On my visit, I ordered the chicken burger with chips which was simple but well done - there aren't any crazy doughnut burgers here, just the classics. Food waste drives us crazy - it's genuinely sinful with parents who allow it, sending kids the wrong message and completely irresponsible. So the kids were more interested in the two pasta dishes - one tomato based and the other broccoli & cream based with sweetcorn from the salad bar. Us old timers settled on pizza slices. Now there had to be a dozen pizza choices, mostly thick based, and as English schools are now closed for summer the place was packed so the food turnover was huge. I'm an odd beggar as I avoid 'meat' in these places as best I can, so I settled on 2 types - one with fresh whole baby tomatoes and tinned green chilli and one made with barbecue sauce. They were both actually very tasty for junk fast food. As I waited for my freshly cooked choices the waitress put down a thin based pizza with cheese literally still sizzling on the pan, so I tried a slice and it was delicious. Most of the pizzas were thick based. We had bottomless drinks too with Pepsi being the cola of choice in PH. They offered a range of flavours to add to the Pepsi choices - strawberry, lime, cherry and so on but we just settled on Pepsi Max. The kids has bottomless ice cream too but the same requirement applied. Small amounts of food with more allowed if their bowl was empty. The kids had at least 6 choices of mostly sugary toppings for the ice cream and two sauces - strawberry and chocolate. All in all we each got something we liked. The bill for 2 adults and 3 kids was just under £54. We would return with grandkids but we do hope it isn't soon.

This pizza take-away serves kebabs, burgers and chicken, and also pizza! And believe it or not, none of its bad. The best thing about the place is the selection, not just in the genre of fast food you fancy but also within each genre too. Pizzas are the usual flavours, with some exiting strange ones such as the donner meat pizza (not risked it myself!). You can also have stuffed crust for an extra quid, and deep pan rather than thin crust for an extra 50p. The garlic bread is well nice too. In terms of kebabs, its all the types of meat you could expect, but unlike most places in Manchester, they serve them not only in the northern Nan Bread style but also in the southern tradition of Pitta Bread. Being a southerner myself, I cant resist this option. Fried chicken and burgers don't need an introduction, it suffices to say that they do the all important hot wings. They also do some interesting extras, including hash browns and corn-on-the-cob. Plenty of meal deals are available including meals for 2, 3, or the whole family and an unbelievably cheap lunch-time deal where you can get a smaller portion of whatever fast-food you require, for a mere £1.99. It does not look like much from the outside, but I can assure you that the pizzas are great and a total godsend when you can't be bothered to be chained to the kitchen. The chicken is spicy and tasty and a close contender for KFC. Okay, so it is full of salt and a tad greasy, but salads and cottage cheeses just don't cut it every day. Popeye Express did not disappoint, the seating area was clean, the staff were polite and presentable and whats more the service was fantastic, we were treated with respect and not leered at! We had our order taken, no pressure to pay before we received the food and the pizza was prepared in front of us. When they invented portion control these guys did not attend the class! The pizza toppings were in abundance no scrimping at Popeye's that's for sure. As there is only seating for 4 there is no environmental requirement for a public toilet, however as kids do mine decided before the pizza was cooked they needed to go! The staff didn't hesitate to show us to the rear of the premises where they allowed us to use their facilities. 15 minutes later our Pizza was fully cooked, cut and boxed for us to take away. Great service, great food, great location. Would I recommend - YES! I'm not going to wreck my diet and go every week but if i'm in Eccles and we need to eat out then Popeye's will be our 1st choice.
