What he doesn't know is that the IRS has a special code for his refusal on the 1099 that he will still receive. He will likely be investigated, fined, and ultimately have to pay his fair share of taxes. I am hearing that he has done this to others. Most of the painting job was decent, but he claimed he could remove two large trees, which they could not. We had to bring in another company to finish that work. Water damage in the attic I needed to find someone to remove insulation, so Steven Dennison could start. Seller approved both bids. After Steve's workers finished clean up of attic they then started on the mold in the bathroom, I had to figure out when the repair for drywall and paint would be completed to schedule the insulation blown back in (I had them on stand by) and the total job would be completed. I got a call from this business. So I sent him a picture of the damage and asked for an estimate. He came back a day later with a $400 estimate. I said I'd like to do it. We scheduled it for May 27th at 9AM (Memorial Day was his idea). The next day I got a QuickBooks email with an invoice from them for $400. I figured it was a software goof, sending me the invoice early. I mean, who is going to pay a complete stranger they've never met $400 for no reason? That's got "scam" written all over it. Well, apparently they expected me to pay in full, in advance. So, the day comes and he doesn't show up. No message. No call. No email. I messaged him at 9:15am and got nothing. I called at 9:30am and I got a very sleepy man. I asked him if he was coming. He said "I figured you didn't want me to since you didn't pay." It's important to remember that I've never met this man yet. He is a stranger on the internet with a business that seems to have gone through several names, with a website that doesn't match the business name, etc. So I asked him why I should pay for a job that wasn't done yet. He countered with "How am I supposed to buy supplies?" Seriously. The insurance company inspector of the damage said it should be six shingles. So this guy apparently felt that I should front $400 so he could buy a few shingles. While I'm responding, he interrupts with "half." That's how he communicates a lot--single words. Now he wanted half the money--$200. That's typical scammer behavior, right? Can't get it all, so go for half. I told him I'd find someone else. I'm not completely averse to fronting some reasonable down payment (or buying the shingles myself), but typically for a job this small, that isn't necessary. I've gotten a furnace installed with no up front money. Same for A/C. Same for my electrical panel. Same for my swamp cooler (yes I have both). My problem is that this idiot didn't communicate the need for a partial payment. He just sent me a one-line invoice for $400 and expected me to pay for it before he did the job. Furthermore, he didn't communicate his assumption that I didn't want the job done because I didn't respond to his premature invoicing, so I jerked up my Memorial Day waiting for his mentally challenged self. All that drama for a simple one-hour (at the most) job. Imagine what might happen if you hired this moron for something bigger. Do not use Randolph Residential. Run the other way.
