This zoo is quite large and houses some rare species not found in any of the other NY Zoos. The trails surrounding the outdoor enclosures give the feel of walking through nature along side the animals on exhibit. It's a peaceful scene that relieves stress after a busy week. The indoor enclosures display many small but pronounced species that are typically overshadowed by the larger animals. Tamarins light up the room with their curious and comical behavior. A pleasant surprise. A zoo? In Brooklyn? Who knew? I must say I was really impressed. For only $8 a person, its so affordable and you get more than your money's worth. A great option for a day trip. We explored the entire park in about 3 hours. You can watch the sea lion training, feed the farm animals, explore the aviary, ect. The exhibits are clean, spacious and not crowded at all for a Sunday afternoon. Lots of kids, but thats expected. An added plus, the zoo is minutes away from 5th and 7th Avenue which has some of the best restaurants Brooklyn has to offer. read more

What a wonderful zoo! I signed my 3 year old granddaughter up for the Junior educational program and she loved everything about it. $8/person almost seems like stealing. It must have the perfect storm of awesome because this day could not have been better! Sunny day, minimal crowds, baby baboons, sea lion feeding, sheep shearing, taking pictures as a turtle, poisonous frog eggs, monkeys with mustaches...I'm pretty sure the only thing that would have made it better is if they had let me ride the emu. Sure the zoo may not have the "glamorous" animals like lions and elephants but those animals have giant turds that lead to giant smells that I hate. The intimate nature of this zoo makes the experience much more exciting than seeing another lion taking a nap behind Plexiglas. Again, if they let you ride the lion...whole 'nother story! read more

So, Prospect Park Zoo isn't home to any meat-ravenous jungle cats, earth-shattering elephants, or those soul-less, God-less sacks of shit known as sharks. But despite the lack of murderous predators, that doesn't exactly make this some lesser attraction. Cute and cuddly things have their place in the world, too. The Prospect Park Zoo's forte is certainly small mammals. Which is kind of perfect, because this zoo's target demographic is certainly small humans. Kids go nuts over those adorable red pandas. They are thoroughly amused by the sea lion show during feeding times. The dingoes are way less mangy-lookin' than you and the kids probably anticipated, so don't be surprised when your youngsters ask you to take one home. The barn houses alpacas, goats, and sheep that will eat pellets out of your toddler's tiny hands. And the kids can pop their heads out of holes in the ground at the prairie dog exhibit, Whac-A-Mole-style, while being guarded by half of an astronaut's helmet clamped to the earth. But more on that later... You shouldn't overlook the indoor animals, either. Among others, there are baboons, tamarins, owls, dart frogs, piranhas, and something called a Pallas' cat, which was both adorable and evil at the same time. I think it sent invisible lasers through the glass and into my soul with that icy glare. Anyway, the price of admission to Prospect Park Zoo is $8 for adults, $6 for seniors (bring grandma!), and $5 for children ages 3-12 (I told you they were favored). That seems reasonable given that two-hours-time is really all you need to allot out of your afternoon here. It should be enough to hold the boys and girls' attention spans, and maybe even knock them out for a nap afterwards. Now, I admit - I don't have any kids, nor did I bring any along with me when I took a romp through PPZ. But I did give some rugrats the stink eye while waiting for them to back down from the prairie dog tunnel so I could take my turn sticking my head in the bubble dome. I've been going to the Prospect Park Zoo for years.... as a child... a teen...and as an adult.... and before this past Saturday - the last time I visited was around 2006... It's no San Diego Zoo, or even comparable to the Bronx Zoo, but if you're in the area you shouldn't overlook the Prospect Park Zoo. This small zoo, set in the middle of Brooklyn's Prospect Park, doesn't have the big ticket animals (no lions, tigers or bears, oh my), but it does offer an opportunity to get very close to a handful of smaller exotic animals. Try and schedule a visit around one of the sea lion feedings, and make sure not to miss the baboons. I am amazed by how close you can get to the kangaroos, where only a minimal fence steers the visitors away from the animals. Here you can actually see the red pandas, unlike the Bronx Zoo, where the monorail zips you past them. There is also a barnyard area where you can feed the cow, goats and sheep - somehow I'm never too old for that. While I'm sure that the Prospect Park Zoo is great for kids, it's great for adults too (particularly the young at heart). I have made multiple short visits due to the convenience, relaxed setting and low cost ($6 for an adult, cheaper for kids). Don't expect to spend the entire day here - a couple of hours should be enough to enjoy all there is to offer. read more

Honestly, the PPZ is my favorite zoo. There's a lot to be said for not having to trek all the way to the Bronx or deal with the crowds. It's small, but every animal they have there is worth looking at. The Bronx Zoo's red panda is tucked away in the Asian Safari or whatever their monorail thing is called. While the Bronx Zoo may be slightly more PETA friendly (I guess as much as a zoo possibly could be), the Prospect Park Zoo is people friendly... the animals are so close that it's impossible to miss them. Granted, they're in little pens in the woods and it's a little sad, but the red pandas seem pretty content to walk along the branches and around and around and the otters (yes, OTTERS!) seemed happy swimming around. The Prospect Park Zoo may not have lions or tigers, or even bears, but they do have a lot of really cool animals that you probably haven't had the chance to be in such close proximity to. If you leaned your arm over, you could probably pet the red panda... but I really DO NOT recommend it. The Prospect Park Zoo may not be the type of place you can spend the entire day at, but its location close to the park makes it the perfect place to stop in, hang out for a while and then enjoy a day of relaxing in the sun or exploring Prospect Park. Like others have said, all they have as far as food goes is vending machines. Even though they supply a microwave to heat some of the vending machine food up (like the white castle burgers), it hardly qualifies as a food court. The zoo was pretty small in comparison to the Bronx Zoo but it wasn't as crowded either. I had a lot of fun feeding the barn animals and seeing some of the exhibits such as the sea lions and the monkeys. There were a lot of signs with information about the animals and also education about conservation and a "graveyard " for animals who have already gone extinct. It seems like the zoo has done a lot to preserve different wildlife species. The zoo didn't have large animals such as lions, tigers, bears etc. Not a huge variety of animals but not bad for the price. So I found a Zoo that's smaller than Central Park Zoo, Prospect Park Zoo. But I didn't care, I still enjoyed it. Regardless though, my nephew loved everything and to me that's all that matters. He loved the lazy fat seal the most, "look tio jo water fall something something water fall". We literally watched that seal do nothing for 10 minutes because my nephew didn't want to leave him, we had to bribe him with ice cream just so we can see the rest of the animals or in his words "see anemanels?" This zoo is awesome, perfect for kids and adults. Even thought it's a small zoo, there are plenty of cool animals to see including curious Pallas cats, baboons making silly faces, weird looking emus, geese and ducks quacking, peacocks strutting by, a posse of turtles laying in the pond, golden lion tamarin with cool hairdos, saki monkeys playing, beautiful tufted deer and more. It's intimate, well maintained and never crowded, so I got the best view for every exhibit and attraction. As you walk into the zoo, you'll be greeted by two bright and loveable sea lions. They have a short performance prepared for you, so make sure to watch them during feeding times. They'll make you smile by showing off a few tricks up their sleeves. The twitchy tail prairie dogs were laying out lazily sunbathing. A couple of them popped their heads out of the burrows, just like the game whac-a-mole. There are a few viewing bubbles that you can crawl up a tunnel to pop your head out too, perfect for photo ops! I was so happy to see the red pandas up close and personal because I didn't get to see them at The Central Park and The Bronx Zoo. They have beautiful red fur with a long furry tail, and a face that slightly resembles a raccoon. I was so fascinated by them... I want one. Dingoes made their debut at the zoo recently, so I'm glad to welcome them with a visit. They look like domesticated dogs but are more closely related to wolves. These are also the first dingoes in a New York City zoo in 40 years. They are just adorable. We nearly missed the Australian wallaby because it was so tiny. So glad I walked back looking for it because I would've been so upset to not have been able to say hello. I was surprised that there was no real fence around the area. The petite baby wallaby was just hanging out on the rock crevice munching on some veggies while we adore him. My favorite part was the petting zoo with the barn animals. The babydoll sheep, goats, and alpacas were all very gentle and friendly. With two quarters you could purchase some pellets to feed them. They enjoyed eating off my hands with their wet tongues tickling me. The two funny looking alpacas have really big eyes hidden underneath their cute little hairdos. They brought a smile to my face. I definitely prefer this zoo over The Bronx Zoo. I love that I don't have to walk miles to get from one attraction to another. Everything was situated closely and the animals were practically right in front of me. It only takes about two hours to get through, so it's a nice short trip before or after picnicking at Prospect Park. The main court yard with the sea lions is really nice. A much more grandiose view/entrance than the Queens zoo. I think overall the Queens Zoo is better but the sea lion show is much better than the Queens one. They actually have a commentator. I guess you could say that the sea lion is their main attraction. The zoo is just really really small but how can you blame them when there's so many zoo's in the same city. The discovery trail is okay. Not a lot of animals and there's too much fencing (not as good for photography). The Queens Zoo doesn't have a lot of fencing at all. The souvenir shop is dismal. I think my kitchen is bigger than the gift shop. Not much to look at or buy. The "cafeteria" area is just vending machines. I guess it's too expensive to have a real grill there. They do have a kosher vending machine. One good thing is that there's TONS of AC in all the little buildings surrounding the main courtyard. You can see all sorts of animals and critters, but the dirtiness of the glass affects the quality of your photos. The "Barn" area (or petting zoo) is small too. The Queens Zoo is much bigger but I feel like the animals here are more attentive and interact more with the humans. One interesting display is that the children can learn how to milk cows. They have 3 wooden cows filled with water and they have stools for kids to sit to pretend to milk the cow. The only reason I'd come back here is for the Red Panda. Love this zoo - people who work here are nice and down-to-earth. Great place for children and families (from what I can tell, seems very accessible and open to families). As cool as one can be with reviewing new restaurants, it's always pleasant to watch animals playing and enjoying food/feeding schedules. PPZ made my birthday great. The zoo itself is very clean. The layout is quick and simple. I love how there are little additions for the kids, especially the little boost by the displays so kids can stand and see the animals. People watching is almost as entertaining as the animals. The sea lion is hysterical. He totally hopped out of the water for a photo-op and the crowd, including me with my super hip iPhone photo app, ate it up. Watched the monkeys for a good 10 minutes. The little seating area is a nice touch. Those little dudes are so fascinating! The animals seem happy. This zoo was a wonderful surprise. I've always been aware it was there, but had never heard anything about it, so I never got around to seeing it. I was definitely missing out. The collection is not as deep or broad as what you'd get at the Bronx Zoo, but what it lacks in scope, it makes up in quality. The zoo's gardens and sculpture are an absolute delight, inspired, and well-curated. The crowds are small - on a Sunday morning, there was a docent at every exhibit, answering questions for as long as a person cared to continue asking them. The overall layout and design of the park are worth writing about as well - you just don't have to cover huge distances to see a lot of animals here, like you would in the Bronx. Decorative plants are dense and varied, and paths twist and turn to keep you focused on what's right in front of you. Fences are carefully managed so that in many cases, you're literally inside an exhibit with nothing more than a rope between you and the animals. Tons of fun if you like zoos. We visited the zoo during December to see my favorite animal, the red panda and it did not disappoint. I took my family to view them again later during the week and they were equally as happy. I was shocked at how uncrowded it was so close to the holidays but the zoo is lovely and has many animals to view. For $6 you really can't go wrong. Theres plenty of free parking on Flatbush so you don't get stuck in that aspect. Its easy to get to from the subway if you take that route. The zoo takes about 2 hours to get through....even less if youre a rusher. I love the baboons. Theyre so much like us. The facial expressions are amazing. They roll their eyes at you like you're completely stupid. I love it! I enjoy the petting zoo part too. I milked a cow and also fed one and reassured her that I would never eat her or her brothers and sisters. She loved me. I also Fed a llama that had a curly brown toupee on the top of its head. No, really thats what it looked like. Theres kangaroos that have no fence around them which surprised me...I guess they're not social animals. The Prospect Park Zoo isn't an epic adventure like the Bronx Zoo, but it's a great way to spend two hours or less on a nice afternoon. There are some pretty nice exhibits such as the red pandas, the baboons, and of course the seal pool, which is great to watch during the three feeding times at 11:30, 2:00 and 4:00. Long story short, if you want to go out and see some animals but don't want to spend an entire day, the Prospect Zoo is as good as it gets. Look into getting a WCS zoo membership for $79/year ($94 for two people) and you'll find yourself getting out to the zoos more often. Not to mention it doesn't take too many visits to make it worth it. read more

I do like this zoo. Went here for Christmas since it was the only place open for a sad, lonely person like me to find something to do on a holiday. The meerkats were fed gift wrapped cardboard tubes like the kind you get with paper towels, filled with worms. Yummy! It was fun to watch the meerkats get so excited to find their delicious treats. And the place was fairly empty, which was also nice. I spent some time watching the Baboon family. Bared my teeth at the male, which I found out was probably not a good idea when he ran over to me ready to fight. Ooops! Thought I remembered seeing something about that on the animal channel, but couldn't remember it quite right. My only complaint would be that I recently tried going here the past weekend and was told back in Christmas that I could lock my bike inside, but this time was told to lock it at the bike racks, which I was unsure where they were. Not sure what the discrepancy was about only in a matter of a few months as far as rules and policies. Another sad thing I noticed was that they had discontinued their $25 pass, which was a great deal for a whole year instead of paying the usual $8 every time. The Red pandas were adorable and the sea lions are super fun to watch. Even when I ride my bike by the zoo, I try to see if they are out. It's kind of refreshing to see sea lions in Brooklyn. It's strange that the zoo only has machines for eating food and not the usual restaurant or cafe. Would really love it if they had a nice place to eat, but if the Museum or Botanical Gardens are any sign, a person would have to pay through the nose for gourmet fare anyhow. read more

The zoo is perfectly sized, not too big but not too small. It's as cheap as the Queen's zoo, but I think it's a better investment. The peacocks are walking around and the red pandas are adorable. If I lived in Brooklyn I imagine we would visit this zoo more often. Our only complaint is the cafe, or really lack there of one. It is like two freezers with over priced drinks and foods in it. I was expecting maybe some hot food service such as hot dogs chicken fingers, or something. I feel adding this type of service would greatly increase the experience of the zoo. Also maybe decreasing the price of the food and refreshments, $4 for a bottled water is a bit much, we don't even pay that much in Disney World. The do have a nice outdoors eating area. I love this little zoo. Came here with my then 18 month old niece. We ended up spending most of our time at the barn feeding the various goats, sheep, etc. It was absolutely priceless hearing her squeal everytime they ate a piece of food out of her hand. The animals themselves were very nice, I wasn't worried once about her getting nipped. My favorite part was the sea lion show. It was really hot that day so I stood as close as I could to the seal pool and got splashed a few times to cool off lol. I haven't been to a zoo since I was a little girl. I was skeptical at first because I read it was a small zoo. I came here with my bf and my first reaction was "So what if it is a small zoo? It's awesome!" :) The price to see exotic animals and farm animals is only $8. It is pretty cool and nice that the zoo was well taken care of and clean. My favorite part is the petting zoo where you get to pet and feed the sheeps, lambs and goats. (I can't really tell the difference between them. lol) My favorite animal is the African Pygmy Goat. Great temperament and super cute. :) He enjoys being petted. The small disappointment is that a few of the exhibits are closed like the kangaroo and a couple others. The other thing is I wish they would allow people to see the alpacas up close as well as the mule and the cows. They're off in a far off fence and makes me curious if that's to protect the animal from us or was it to protect us from them. Come to think of it, I don't imagine any of these guys to bite. If you ever go to the PP Zoo, do NOT miss the feeding of the sea lions-schedule your visit around one of their feedins. This event is not to be missed. They are soooooooo cu-ute! They know it's feeding time and they get super excited and swim around enthusiastically and just generally show off. There is a great informative narration while the handlers feed them and lead them through their daily exercises. I don't, know, but something about watching this activity really made me laugh and smile like a child myself. I heart those little sea lions! read more

While small like the Central Park Zoo, it has different animals. The biggest attraction here are the baboons and boy are there lots of them--and ones with some personality. Just look at this guy!!! He put his nose up against the wall in such a pretentious manner--we couldn't stop laughing and staring. All of the kids wanted to put their noses against his. It was very cute. And then there was this big guy, just watching all of us. They have a nice barn where you can get close and feed the animals. It was too funny because Mom said "Hello there," to this goat that she hadn't fed earlier and he turned around, gave a large and mean "baaaah!" and stared her down. It was a good time looking inside the two houses of animals and walking around the outdoor exhibits, but certainly not a must-see zoo. read more

When I was visiting my sister in Brooklyn her boyfriend showed us around Prospect Park. To his surprise we found a zoo located in the park (he has been living in NY for 6 months when we came and has been to the park multiple times). The zoo is pretty small, but had a good selection of animals. I went during the winter but most of the animals were out and awake. Including a peacock who was out it's cage and no one seemed to care. :D It's perfect for someone who doesn't have all day to spend. Wonderful place. It might not have Girrafes (spelling) Elephants or any of the animals you might see in the Bronx Zoo (never been there) this place sure brings some memories. To make a long review short, eat before coming here for some reason you come out being so hungry. Also, be sure to visit to petting zoo, sea lion feeding times, Meerkats, and monkeys (Baboons) I guess thats a must. Oh and this zoo is not that small but it will take about 2 hours to look around. It gets three stars because of those cute little baby baboons alone. They are the newest addition and watching them play fight and scamper about was too cute! There were a good amount of animals missing of course all the ones the child that I took there wanted to see, but we made the best of it. The sea lions were also adorable on the day I was there there was some kind of music promotion and they danced to the latin infused beats which was amusing to watch. This is a great little zoo and though it is one of the smallest in NYC, I find that to be part of its appeal. Although this zoo lacks any large animals, the collection they do have is pretty diverse and special. I don't know if it's that we were only a few of a handful of visitors at the zoo, but the animals were so much more friendly and interactive than I've experienced at other zoos. Not to mention, the zoo staff is so nice and friendly. Some of them just come up to you and tell you fun facts about the animal you're viewing. Even though it was a chilly day, we were able to see pretty much all of the animals. The sea lions kept swimming by and showing off right in front of us. A few kept jumping out of the water and perching on the side of the wall to pose for pics! The red pandas were crouching in a corner, but when we approached, they came out to climb the branches in front of us and enjoy our fawning attention. Even the baboons came out of their hiding place to sit on the rocks for a few minutes. Loved the monkeys and pallas cat, but the otters might have been my favorite. They were so playful and cuddly, and kept running up and putting their paws on the barrier to see us better. So. Much. Cuteness. There were some pretty cool birds too. In my opinion, this is a better zoo than Central Park Zoo and it's half the cost. If you want the zoo extravaganza, then Bronx Zoo is your best bet. read more

Your website lies. tear. Opened 365 days a year and yet... barely any animals out? And when there are a few out I feel incredibly horrible for seeing kangaroos outside, next to flatbush avenue in 30 degree weather. +1 more star for being quaint. read more

We had a great time here today. The weather was great for a day at the zoo. There are plenty of exhibits to see. Although the zoo itself is not that big, it's the perfect size for small children. My toddler especially enjoyed feeding the farm animals and the ducks. We will return in the future. read more

After scoring the WCS IDNYC membership at the Bronx Zoo, dropped by here after a quick your of the Lefferts Historic House out front (near the carousel). Shame there are no more Kangaroos or Wallabees, but I guess they're marsupials for a reason. read more

Sea lions were amazing. Peacocks strolled around, and exhibits were kid friendly. Lots of fascinating sculptures, cool, plant, flower and tree lined pathways with the most natural-looking zoo environments I have ever seen. Clean and pleasant--not a smelly zoo at all. read more
