I ended up having to purchase a handheld carpet and upholstery cleaner to do the stairs, and that little machine (plus about 2.5 hours of effort) did way better than Mr. Vac. Photos in this post is one of the remnant stains after Mr. Vac "cleaning" but before I cleaned the stairs myself. Also pictured is the dirty water reservoir from my machine after cleaning just 3 of the 18 stairs. You'd think after a "professional" job, there wouldn't be this much reserve dirt in the carpet...right? In future we will always recommend against Mr. Vac for carpet cleaning of our homes.
