Their main competitor is No Frills under the Loblaws banner. Some Food Basics are not that nice in that the store is a bit grungy and the clientele are generally rude (depends on the postal code that the store is in), but this one in Orleans is one of the nicer ones on both accounts. The store is big and brightly lit. They are well stocked and staff are not surly. Customers are respectful on the most part. If you have been turned off by Food Basics in the past, give this one on Innes a try, you might have a more favourable opinion afterwards. This location is in a plaza. Lots of free parking.

An older man..I did not get his name... Stocky balding guy.. Left his stock cart in the middle of an aisle and I did not see it. I accidentally bumped my cart into out and he started reading me the riot act. I said his cart was blocking the aisle and I didn't see it. He kept going on and on .. How abort not leaving it where it would be a hazard, for starters? Also, how about if you leave your attitude at home, and be civil to the customers who shop here... The cashier was pretty rude too. I guess to have low prices you need to treat your customers like garbage.

It really wasn't an attractive looking place to shop! They recently closed and spent a few weeks on renovating and have reopened as a Fresh Co. The selections are so much better here now. There are a lot more ethnic items available, which is suitable to the area. So far, the produce and meat seem to be very fresh and the prices seem to have stayed low. The new staff seem enthusiastic and friendly, even if they are still getting used to the job. Overall the whole store is much more attractive!

It has less selection than other Metro locations, since it's smaller and sort of an "urban concept" store. For example they don't have the Life Smart brand cheese that I like (that almost all other Metro locations carry) and they also don't have the rice crackers I like :( However, they recently installed a price scanner so you can check the prices of items and I haven't seen this at other locations yet. This Loblaws is a lot swankier than other Loblaws in Ottawa. They have a fancy patisserie area…read morewhere you can see staff making pastries and decorating cakes. Their selection of baked goods is greater than other Loblaws. They also have a Starbucks inside. Their prepared foods area is also a lot nicer looking than other locations. This Loblaws is huge. There's a big Joe Fresh clothing section. They have a good cheese section. Their floral section is also good, like they have lots of flowers, not just some wilted carnations like at some smaller locations. This location reminds me a lot of the present-day Loblaws on St. Clair Avenue West at Bathurst Street in Toronto. I say present-day because most of my memories of that Loblaws are from when I was a kid and they definitely did renovations since then, because it wasn't much to look at back then, but is super nice now, lol. There is a special place in my heart for the above Toronto Loblaws, so that may contribute to why I really like this Loblaws in Barrhaven. I'm rarely in Barrhaven, but the times that I've been to this Loblaws I've scored some great sales. They have lots of marked down items (50% off) either because they are short-dated or they are discontinued or they didn't sell well. Fortunately for me, I have weird tastes, lol, so I tend to like things that don't sell well, like that wacky chip flavour no one liked, bring it on! That crazy ice cream flavour? Yum yum! And short dated? No problem! I don't like to delay gratification when it comes to food, I mean sometimes packages barely make it to my car before they are opened and my mouth is full, haha. Anyway, I like this Loblaws. If it were closer to my house, I would be there all the time. Lots of free parking in the plaza.

I like that they carry some products that are not easily found at other large supermarkets. They have Neale's Sweet 'n Nice Caribbean Ice Cream (the Passionfruit Guava flavour is delicious and the company is Canadian!), Jarritos (including in Guava, yeah, I like guava a lot, lol), and Patsy Pie gluten-free cookies (also a Canadian company, but no guava-flavoured cookies though, haha). They occasionally have good sales and their regular prices on some items are about $1 less than the regular prices at places like Metro, Loblaws, and even Real Canadian Superstore. They have Purell wipes by the door, which I use to wipe down the handle that everyone touches to push the grocery buggy. Remember...only YOU can prevent the transmission of Influenza, Rotavirus, Norovirus, etc.! Lol. (High five if you get the reference to Smokey the Bear, haha). The staff are nice and there's lots of free parking.

Then they gave my family member's Christmas bonus away to charity! Can you believe that? They had no right. The company doesn't offer any benefits or paid leave. Shop here only if you don't care about how employees are treated. A billion dollar company can afford to treat their employees better! End corporate greed!
