    Kids learning to cook
    Isabeau D.

My daughter absolutely loves Puddle Jumpers Workshop and talks about the kids there all the time. She also loves the other parents and runs up to them and gives them big hugs, which just makes me so happy. The space (located at the Polish Club in the Mission) is charming and huge, and there are a bunch of local parks that the kids go to twice a day. There are music classes, garden days (where they play with water, mud, magnifying glass, learn about bugs and sample fruit at the local community garden), art classes and a variety of play-based sensory activities. Today, they learned how to bake toddler-friendly granola and banana bread! The two teachers are both incredibly talented, experienced and knowledgeable about how to work with children, keep activities varied and fun, empower the kids to resolve conflicts, foster autonomy and mutual aid. The teachers are also and great at communicating with parents. We're so lucky to have them! It's a parent-run co-op (the oldest in SF), so it does require a time commitment. My husband and I both work full time, but we're fortunate enough to have some flexibility and we each work shifts at the daycare depending on who is less busy. Kids grow up so damn fast and soon my baby will be off to school, so I'm really grateful to have this time where I can see what she gets up to all day and get to know her social life. It's also enriching to be part of a community of like-minded parents with kids the same age. We can exchange ideas, experiences and support each other inside and out of the co-op. It feels very old-school San Francisco, which I love, but is also very new-school in some practical ways (we all communicate together via Slack). The daycare is only from 18 months to 3 years old and stops admitting kids at 2 years old because it is a significant time commitment to be part of the co-op, both in terms of learning the ropes, and then training other new parents as kids age-out and are replaced by new families. Drop-off is from 9 to 9:30 and pickup is at 4:30 because parents need to clean up the space. Kids usually come back from the park after cleanup at 5. So it definitely doesn't give you a full 8 hour working day on days where you're not on shift. Parents shifts are usually half days. There are also administrative jobs that you have to do as part of running the coop as well as a monthly meeting. It's a time commitment, but if you're able to swing it, it's really incredible fun.

Love, LOVE that this is my child's first school experience. It's from ages 18 months to 3 years old so developmentally the children are in the same growing stage together. This has helped my son tremendously with confidence and new skill implementation as he see's his peers communally eating, sitting still for teacher lead stories and instructions, potty training, and learning to play side by side. My son is learning to communicate his feelings as he learns and understands his autonomy and capabilities are greater than I thought he had at this age. Thanks Teachers Alyssa & Teacher Michele! Being in a Coop, new families should know parent participation is required and jobs are assigned based on proficiency. Running a school is undertaking, so bear that in mind but the price reflects this. At a non-coop, dropping your child off with no involvement in the business operation is the norm and their higher costs mirrors that. But your child's day is separate to your own. Choosing this type of care was originally our path until I read that 85/90% of a childs brain is developed by age 5 and so who better to mentor our child through his most significant years, than us, his parents! Co-ops allowed our family to have involvement in our child's development as well as give us the breaks necessary to have our own professional life and he with his peers. Being apart of our child's most important developmental years, (before elementary where teachers stop us at the door), is monumentally rewarding. When my second child is of age, she too will be given the same opportunity and I look forward to rejoining the community. Learning from the community is a benefit that is priceless. I had a whole community helping me with potty training! How fantastic is that!!! Thanks PJ Families! I appreciate the love. I've learned so much about how best to be a parent (as well as run a small daycare/school business!) There is so much love and care in this community that as we age-out and graduate, I hope we find that in our next Co-op school. Some epic things about PJ: - On Super Tuesday, kids learned about voting for their fav fruits, animals & mode of transportation. - Yearly field trips include overnight family camping trip, zoo visits & pumpkin patches. - the quarterly beer&pizza school-cleanups.

We started at PJW when Dorothea was 18mo and it was amazing from day one! Teacher Michele is great, the parents are great, the community is great. It has brought us together, and includes us as participants in our daughter's learning and care. Teacher/Parent to kid ratio is always better than 4:1. They get outside time, artistic time, they have their own garden to tend and learn about growing food, they do science play, and so much more. It's really spectacular and we are so glad we found this very special group!

    Hugs!
    Geoff K.

PJW is a vibrant, cooperative community of committed parents and beautiful kids. We love and look out for each other's children as if they were our own. We protect, play with, comfort, and encourage the kids. And sometimes we have remind them how to better share, play, and coexist with each other. We strive to create an environment of safety, joy, and consistency for these precious, developing little people. We've been sending our daughter to PJW for a few months now and already we feel like an integral part of the community. I have total trust in any of the co-op's other parents when they are taking care of my daughter -- a rare feeling for a newish parent. She started at 18-months and was smaller than most of the kids. But the bigger kids and the watchful parents and teachers ensured that our daughter didn't get knocked around or overlooked. Now, she comes home talking about her friends at PJW by name. We are experiencing the joy of making friends for the first time through her eyes. And we've noted the positive effects, in terms of rapidly increased communication skills, ability to share, and physical hardiness, of belonging to a social, sharing, playful group. I look forward to growing closer to the PJW family over the coming months and would encourage any interested parents to come to an open house and check it out for yourselves.

Our teacher is so gifted. Here's a circle time.

He's loved every year and it's been amazing to watch him grow in confidence and develop a genuine excitement for learning. The teachers take the time to understand each child's unique personality. We've been impressed with how they truly foster kindness, independence, and a love of learning. We also really like the balance of Montessori learning and traditional academics. Thanks to their guidance, our son is more than ready for kindergarten and was accepted into our private school of choice. He's also made wonderful friends and so many great memories. Some of his favorite moments include the class pumpkin patch trips, dressing up for Ms. Galyna's annual tea party, and fun pajama days. We've loved seeing photos of his projects, Montessori activities, baking days, gardening, music time, and so much more. We can't thank Little Wonders enough for giving our son such a strong, nurturing foundation.

They are super attentive to the kids, very caring, and know how to shape the kids into wonderful little people. Some programs out there have hit or miss teachers who lack strong engagement with their kids and may just sit back. Not here. The teachers lean in and run a well designed program that thinks through emotional learning, academic learning, and structured play. Every time we have a school holiday the kids prepare and sing songs for the families and have choreographed routines. They learn how to follow instructions very well. On the learning front, our son is a fluent Mandarin listener via the Mandarin immersion and we expect that to set him up very well for a full K-5 Mandarin program. As a 4 year old he has been learning basic phonics and writing at school, which is an awesome acceleration over the status quo. Our son has developed extremely well in all dimensions as a result of his time at Tinker. We have also forged strong bonds with the community (parents, teachers, and staff). The PGA is highly engaged and we have many events throughout the school year. The one area that could be improved is back office organization and clear communications, especially upon grade transitions. But this is somewhat to be expected given all the moving pieces of families leaving and working around class size constraints. It all works out in the end!

His earliest teacher, Sally, instantly became one of his favorite grownups. She brought such warmth to everything. In her class they would craft with materials from nature to work on fine motor skills, go on neighborhood walks to learn to observe while learning Mandarin and English vocabulary, and work on sharing and kindness in the sandbox on their trips to the playground. She and Teacher Fangfang make a wonderful team. In Teacher Laylay's TK class, his world expanded - their class goes on daily field trips to the likes of Cal Academy, MOMA, City Hall, and sometimes neighbors welcome them to observe chickens in their backyard! Together with Teachers Annie and Hannah, they work on Mandarin through instruction and songs (and put on performances every few months), along with English phonics. They work on art projects to celebrate our seasons, and during free play, the children explore Legos, train tracks, puzzles, and kinetic sand building. He enjoys school so much that he wants to be first to arrive in class, and last to leave! The family community is supportive and welcoming, and we've made some life-long friends. We've had many spontaneous Town Square hangs, parent night outs, and a few camping trips over the years. Miranda, the Head of School, was invaluable in supporting us as we navigated kindergarten applications. From guiding us to the right fit for our son, to just calming our nerves along the way, she went above and beyond. We are thrilled that our son got into his first choice school. It's a testament to the reputation she's built with Tinker.

It was, without a doubt, one of the best decisions we made for her early development and happiness. From day one, we had complete confidence in Jasmine and her dedicated team. By the third day, she was no longer crying at drop-off and quickly began looking forward to going to school. She regularly talks about her amazing teachers--Chloe, Toni, and Ruby--and all the friends she made in her classroom. One standout example of Apple Tree's incredible attention to detail: during her very first week, they surprised us by celebrating her 2nd birthday with a cake and singing, even though she was brand new. She was absolutely beaming in the photos they shared with us. The classroom activities were varied, thoughtful and based on monthly themes. We loved receiving weekly photo updates that showed all the fun and educational things she was doing. It was clear she was thriving in this environment. A unique and helpful perk of Apple Tree is the monthly Parent's Day--offering full-day weekend drop-in care. This gave us valuable time to recharge, knowing she was in a safe and familiar space where she was happy and well-cared for. We also really appreciated the flexibility Apple Tree provided with our variable weekly schedule, allowing for earlier drop-offs when needed. Since starting at Apple Tree, our daughter's confidence and independence have blossomed. The school gently encouraged her to do things on her own--like putting on her jacket and shoes--which built her self-esteem.
