As a woman veteran I found my welcome less than warm. I was in fact told by a volunteer -- unsolicited -- that he didn't hold with women in the Navy. Too much of a distraction for the men, he said. I can't say I was surprised -- this reception is still common in military museums. I am disappointed, however, with management and with whatever training they have seen fit to provide to volunteers. I live in the hope that those who manage sites like these will someday accord women veterans the same basic respect they give our brothers in uniform. No more, no less. read more

It's a good museum for the shipyard history Lots of old models and memoirs The building itself is quite a testament to time. Accompanied by nice gift shop to buy souvenirs variety of price range. It is a good place to visit for people with interest in maritime history and contributions of locals to our Country's Navy. read more

This place is run by volunteers, and they make the visit memorable with their warm welcome. We arrived within an hour of closing time and the gentleman at the front door mentioned "the museum closes at five. If you want to stay later, I will get out some glass cleaner and rags so you can clean up after I go home." We let our seven year old take the lead as we went room to room to discover interesting exhibits. His favorites were (1) the model of Nimitz Aircraft Carrier. The helicopter on the deck had four blades that folded up, into the front (2) the story of a competition to see which naval base could raise the most funds in war bonds. The winner would have a ship named after them. The other competitor was Mare Island Naval Shipyard. The USS Bremerton won--and proudly displayed a model of the Baltimore class heavy cruiser, and the actual ships bell. (3) a few years ago the National Park Service team used LIDAR, sonar, and photogrammetry data captured by underwater divers equipped with scanners and cameras to compiled a cohesive 3D model of the USS Arizona. It's simplicity belies the brutal manner in which the Japanese Declared war. The three feet long 1:200 scale of the ship shows its crumpled frame. This museum ensures that long after we are gone, the memories of fallen sailors of WW will remain. My grandfather (on my Dad's side) was a captain of the USS Longshaw DD-559. After a grueling four-day period of a rain of steel (heavy shore fire) they ran aground a coral reef. 18 May 1945 my grandfather was killed. A sailors dress uniform on the wall reminded me of a picture of my grandfather on my mothers side. He safely returned home. There was an interesting exhibit upstairs about how laser printing can help lighten the load for missions out into space. There's so many interesting things here. Who knew that a wrench could be laser printed to facilitate repairs in the space station? The cost of admission is free. I highly recommend you check this out because the US Navy is an important part of our history. read more

Worth a visit. Opened my yelp app today and typed in things to do! The navy museum popped up. We decided to check it out. The museum is near the ferry, depending on time there will be ferry traffic. It was busy traffic wise when we went, but plenty of 1 hr parking available nearby. The museum is free to visit. Two floors of exhibits to view regarding the Bremerton shipyard and Navy in general. This museum has a lot of interactive stations for the kids to play with. There is an elevator if needed, very clean bathrooms on both floors and a gift shop. read more

Situated in an colonial style house with breathtaking views of Puget Sound. Two floors that pays homage to the history of the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and the other ships that have been stationed at the ship yard. Several artifacts from the Naval shipyard, life size replicas of ships, old equipment once used on ships. There's a kid's room where they can color. Even actual uniforms to try on. It's really great to have a place with so much history that's relies on volunteers! We came here after our scenic ferry from Seattle, and we couldn't resist checking out the museum after seeing that it was free. Having two grandfathers in the navy, I had a special connection to the space and felt proud looking at all of the artifacts. Definitely worth stopping by! read more

I spend one long and very fun afternoon at this small museum in Bremerton. It is located less then a block from the ferry terminal and a short walk from scenic downtown Bremerton, which is great if you make a day trip of it and ride the ferry over from Seattle like I did. The museum is completely free and staffed almost entirely by volunteers, many of whom are retired naval servicemen and woman. The museum homes many unique items that show the history of the Navy in the Puget sound from uniforms, to ship models, and other fun odds and ends. As this sits right next to the naval dry dock and repair base you also get to learn a little about how ships used to be made which I enjoyed. Upstairs they even have several rooms set up like a mock ship you can explore and get a little bit of what its like to live at sea on a Navy vessel, including a bunk which is rather claustrophobic. The museum also has a children's room with a child size replica of a naval ship kitchen, wooden submarine, and other interactive exhibits kids can be really hands on with. I will admit I tried to crawl in the wooden submarine to my embarrassment! This little museum also has a modest gift shop with a number of fun things to explore. Overall I was really glad I came out and would definitely return to explore some new exhibits as they go on display in the future. read more

This is worth a stop if you happen to be in Bremerton. A lot of good information and history. The museum is 2 floors, with stairs or an elevator to get up and down. There were some interactive displays that were pretty cool. Plus, admission is free! Parking is a bit difficult as there is no parking lot. You will have to park on the street wherever you can find a spot, or just pay to park in a parking garage. Either way, it is a little bit of a walk from your car to the museum, but not too bad at all. read more

The Puget Sound Navy Museum is FREE, accessible directly from the ferry terminal in Bremerton, situated within beautiful landscaped grounds amongst a series of fountains bordering the sound, and a useful resource for families with crawling babies on up through middle school. I also highly recommend the Bremerton Bar and Grill directly across if you are making a day of it and need to regroup with a meal. I am a young SAHM who would probably be more at home in Poulsbo [but live in Brem] and am always on the lookout for ways to pass the time with my 9 month old. This winter was a long one with a baby too young for playgroups or swim lessons, and this museum was an excellent excuse to get out of the house. The museum is well laid out to educate and appeal to young and old alike, but for my purposes, the kid's room in the back of the first floor is amazing. I will liken it to KiDiMu on Bainbridge, except of course, without a $5 sticker price per person, and no 45 minute drive. There was a submarine apparatus for climbing, bean bag chairs, 7 different outfits for playing dress-up, a puppet theatre, play kitchen with tons of "food", pint sized table and chairs, coloring station, and privacy to let the kiddos run wild! Yes, there is some heavy recruiting for the ship yard at play, but young children won't be aware of it. The old people who work there are also really nice. I also have to give a shout out to the bathrooms, which feature floor to ceiling frosted glass windows creating a brightly lit interior, marble countertops, and a handy baby changing station. It is such a relief to have a free, clean, pleasant place to spend a rainy afternoon. read more

This is a nice museum that is located near the Bremerton Ferry Terminal. It is located in an old building next to the water park. It's free admission and it covers 2 floors. The subject is the Bremerton ship yards with some information about the Navy. It's a good way to spend some time while waiting for the ferry boat to Seattle. read more
