There's tons to see and learn and knowledgeable docents to add their personal knowledge and life experience. The parking is plentiful and free and admission is free, but why not sign the visitor book and then donate a few bucks to this great place to help keep things going. A very inexpensive (donation only) and informative museum about all things naval and undersea. There's a large section on training various sea animals and of course in life on a submarine. It's a valuable and interesting place to visit. I love small, specific museums and this is a good example. read more

We were in the area for a wedding, had never heard of this museum and stopped on a lark. So glad we did. This is an amazing learning experience. One of the greeters is a submariner vet and he was so interesting. We could have spent longer there but had to go. Especially liked the exhibit on dolphins and sea lions. read more

This is a wildly interesting museum, and even if you're not particularly interested in Navy or undersea warfare history, I think you'll find something here to captivate you. This museum wasn't even on our list of destinations during our trip to the Olympic Peninsula. We wouldn't have even known about it if we didn't decide on a whim to take a ferry back to Seattle instead driving around Puget Sound. As we headed toward the ferry terminal, we passed the sign for the museum. After quickly reading about it, we doubled back to make a visit. It was one of the best decisions we made. After enjoying the outdoor displays, we entered the museum (no admission fee, BTW) and were greeted by a veteran volunteer docent. He emphasized that this is not a "submarine" museum but rather an "undersea" museum. Intrigued, we eagerly entered. To be clear, there is plenty of history about submarines and the people who served in the US Navy's Submarine service. It was amazing to learn how much training is required to become a submariner - everyone has to know how to operate virtually every system in the submarine, and they are rigorously tested before being granted their dolphins. I have a friend who spent over 20 years in the "Silent Service", and after visiting here I have even more respect and admiration for him. The physics of submarines and torpedoes was well-explained, and there were several actual torpedoes on display, some with cutouts to show the interior mechanism. But beyond the extensive military history, there is also information about undersea geology, diving and escape suits, and - this I found really fascinating - the use of marine mammals (dolphins and sea lions) in defense and counterterrorism operations. We could have spent at least a couple hours here, but we did have a ferry to catch. Visit this museum. You will not be disappointed. read more

Old stomping ground. After the Kingston ferry experience (I know you read that review), my son wanted to know what it's like underwater. Well I couldn't dunk his head in the hotel shower so I took him here. FYI I wouldn't do that to my son. Gee you people. The museum is free of charge and volunteer guilds are there to help you with questions. It's a self pace tour that covers from the early use of dive gear to the modern protection of Trident Missiles on boomers. There's an old control room from an actual decommissioned submarine that includes an audio tape of the sub diving. You'll see how sea mammals help USN, the underwater drone program, and the history of the submarine torpedo. Of course, there's a gift shop but not too much of a inventory Overall five stars. I like the interaction you can have with some of the props. And it's fairly accurate to my experience. Man a lot has changed. Now excuse me, I wonder what this button does. M read more

Topography, light, sound, oxygen, pressure, density, buoyancy, salinity, thermal properties, geology, torpedo's, submarines, assault vehicles, tuffy the dolphin, pioneers of history for nuclear navy, ballistic missiles just to name a few. I highly recommend visiting this wonderful museum! I cannot believe what a beautiful job they have done putting this experience together, and made it FREE to the public! The Navy and Coast Guard are the corner stone of this community, the entire Puget Sound really. So why not go learn a thing or two about what is in your backyard? This is a fantastic place to bring children of all ages as well. We really enjoyed or visit here and especially are thankful to Larry, an excellent and informative volunteer at the museum. Great history of the submarine, mines, torpedos, etc., as well as information about atmosphere/oceans. The docents are knowledgeable, and we saw several service members in full dress whites answering visitor questions. We were there 2 hours - until they closed - and could have used another 30 minutes. The amount of time needed depends on how much you want to read. We really enjoyed the interactive exhibits, though all are well done. Glad we chose to visit. read more

Free admission and in a beautiful, seaside setting! I was able to learn a lot at this place about undersea naval technology and warfare. Was really a great place to learn about something so obscure yet so important in our history. It really was fascinating to learn all about the history of just simply diving under the water and staying for a while. Easy to find from the main road into Keyport. Parking was plentiful and friendly docents to help you start your tour of the museum. Spent a good hour and a half here and only had to leave after closing. Really worth a visit!! read more

Wandering through here is like diving into another world. It's FREE and really covers many aspects of undersea warfare well, in addition to the natural marine ecosystems. He explained the route that we should take to get the most of our visit in the museum and set the precedent for the rest of our experience here. Lots of information. We had a great visit here in March! The docent who greeted us was very kind and knowledgeable. He directed us appropriately with a small map and guided information. We could have spent longer here, but 2-hours was perfect for us. There was a quaint gift store inside. Most if not all of the equipment and artifacts (and subs outside) are from submarines, which was really cool to learn about. I guess I never knew that navy personnel who serve on a submarine have to volunteer and be selected for this special division. This newer and fine museum does not charge an entrance fee, but please do bring along some cash for a donation, they're so deserving! read more

I am glad this museum is here because I'm glad we are close to the ocean. I mean, going underwater, like more than10-20 feet, is unnatural, right? Subs go deeper, longer. I5 connects Portland and Seattle plus points North and South. It is no secret that traffic around Seattle is fierce. But Washington has its ferry system. So an option to bypass Seattle traffic is to take the backroads along the Hood Canal from Olympia or Grays Harbor then use the ferry into the Seattle area. The museum, part of http://www.history.navy.mil/visit-our-museums.html, covers the history of submarines with graphics, many old undersea diving suits, they have an obsession with torpedos, then some modern military submarine controls, unique sealife exhibits. Guided tours by advance request. They also have a few large rescue and research submarines on blocks outside in the parking lot. They have a gift shop with a children's' focus on toys and books. They have many mermaid about 8" stuffed toys. They did have a jellyfish equivalent of the lava lamp with fluoro jelly models in a recirculating fluid - perfect for Washington's new laws on entheogens. They had a lot of Navy items in the gift shop of interest to veterans. It is a great remembrance for and to submarine force veterans. It can be a resource for children with specialized interests. Visiting my sister and her family who just moved here, we thought we'd go check out the Naval Undersea Museum since it's not far from their home. Free admission, unique exhibits, VERY family/kid-friendly, and not crowded (even though it was the holidays). The staff is welcoming and helpful while the exhibits are well-thoughtout and varied. I learned a lot about everything from ocean life to submarine technology to diving and torpedoes. Ah-ooga! Ah-ooga! Dive! Dive! Visiting this place almost makes me want to go back underwater, for several months, in confined spaces, with little privacy, and sleep-deprived. Almost. The Naval Undersea Museum is an awesome (and free) introduction to the history, science, and operations of US Navy submarines and the lives of the sailors who operate them. Due to the secretive nature of submarine operations, few people outside of the military completely understand the role that submarines play in world affairs. And its a lot more extensive than one would initially think. The museum does a good job in introducing visitors to submarines and providing some insight into their numerous and varied operations. They even have a few real submarines on display, including the deep-submergence vessel, Trieste II, which was involved in super-secret CIA missions. Cool stuff! If you happen to be in the area and have a a few hours to spare, be sure to check this place out! They are closed on Tuesdays from October to May. read more

My husband and I took our 3 grandsons, ages 5, 8, and 10, to the museum one rainy day. This is a very professionally curated museum with a special hands on area friendly to kids. Many of the exhibits had hands on demonstrations too, like seeing how long you can hold your breath with a lighted timer, pressurized push button, and more. These were fun for kids and adults. There were exhibits of torpedoes and diving suits and equipment and so much more. Also an exhibit on dolphins that were trained to help the Navy. There was a gift shop and clean bathrooms too. Oh, the first thing you see are the outside exhibits of rescue vehicles for subs in trubs! Definitely go and check this out! read more

Another great example of the proud Naval history in this area. This museum is a gold mine for kids and adults alike. It is free admission as well! There are lots of great exhibits like the diving suits, the torpedoes and the best exhibit to me and my boys was the actual control room from the USS Greenling. We drove here on a whim. We saw the sign by the freeway and decided to give it a try. I was so not disappointed. Wonderful displays and interactive ones talking about ocean facts and history. It's a great place to explore at any age. I happened to be there when a class of students were visiting. It was such a delight to see the students and teachers really into the field trip. Very impressive... and free! The section on Trident (ballistic missile/ "boomer") submariners & family is accurate and comprehensive, if slightly outdated regarding family grams (used before email). The fist one is from the Hunt for the Red October and the second one is from Crimson Tide . OK, I'm a geek, but it was still fun to walk around this place. The Naval Undersea Museum at Keyport gives you an interesting look at the history of undersea nautical and military hardware. It's off the Bainbridge Island Ferry from Seattle's downtown, then a drive another 20 minutes to Keyport. There are WW2 Torpedoes, the USS Greenling Control Room and deep Submergence Vehicle. This was a great time for a day trip. Don't forget to see the poopie suit. read more

We took our family here and frequent this great place pretty often. The displays are wonderfully done and even if you don't know much about submarines or torpedo history, the quality of the exhibits will pull you in and submerge (haha) you into the incredible feats the Navy has had and continues to have underwater. This place is FREE!!! The museum is wonderfully done, my kids love the submarine "cockpit" (cant remember what its called) with tons of buttons, working parascopes and charts. It is not a huge place, our family went through in about 45 min (without reading every last detail). But its a great place to stop if you are in the area, are interested in the subject OR if you need a cool cheap fun activity for your kiddos for a bit.
