Recommended by Veronica at the 5th Floor Hotel, Pulperia ("grocery store") Quilapan in San Telmo was well worth the 30-minute taxi ride from our Palermo neighborhood. We were greeted warmly, seated promptly, and handed menus in English. For two Americans from Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood, prices are a heckuva deal--my wife's delicioso guiso del cazador (hunter's stew) was US$6.75, my excelente bondiola de cerdo (pork) a whopping $7.50! They're accompanied by an excellent $8 bottle of Alpamanta Malbec. I splurge and double down on two bottles of a spectacular La Loggia IPA (7%, 50 ibu)--$3.50/each. A great restaurant with a variety of pasta and meat specialties and it's open late. The locale is very well put. Nice yet simple decor (quite typical Buenos Aires style) that has a lot of history. Service was pretty good considering My visit was at 1:30 AM. Food came out fast and was delicious. I stepped inside here on Argentina's Independence Day (9th July). Lovely welcome drink of mulled wine followed by a very traditional Locra stew served from a giant cauldron. Beautiful interior chock full of antiques and loads of preserved history. We went in the mid afternoon, so the food selections were limited to the snack menu. We had the eggplant empanadas which were delightful, papas bravas which give the Spanish iterations a run for their money, and a garden salad which was fresh but not remarkable. Service was nice and attentive, the music and ambiance were great. The French proprietor was super nice, and gave us a lovely history lesson on the place and a little tour. read more

Really interesting style of restaurant/bar. Owned by a French couple it is decorated to reflect an old fashioned countryside establishment. I am told few exist anywhere now and especially not in the city. Inside it has all sorts of antique style trinkets and accessories hanging everywhere. Outside there is a courtyard where the roof can be pulled back and also a traditional fire BBQ/grill. We went to try some unusual beer and food. We had pickled wild boar stew & a cheese and chorizo board (not unusual). Beer wise we got to try a quinoa beer, a herb one and also a Argentinian brewed Belgium style beer. Cool and very different. Lovely place with good vibes and rustic interior. Nice backyard with big parrilla and outdoor seating. A nice place to have lunch, drinks or dinner. Have a nice selections of plates and dishes. Has probably the best bread you can get in this town with their sandwiches and chorizos. read more

This was a very disappointing experience... with so many good places in BA, go elsewhere. The service was mediocre or worse. I ordered empanadas to start. I would love to tell you something about them, but I never got them even after telling the waitress about it. I also have a disability and asked them to cut the steak when they served it.... no such luck. The waitress said they were too busy. Then my steak. I asked for it medium and received well done. I could overlook that, but then I tasted it and it was not hood at all. This is Argentinian meat for crying out loud!!! I had some wine, which the waitress let me try when she opened it... then she left without pouring in the glass after telling her it was good to serve. I gave two stars because the general ambiance is nice. I sat outside under a tree in the patio and enjoyed the rustic surroundings. Too bad the food and service didn't match it. One of the best meals I had in Buenos Aires. This restaurant is incredible, friendly staff, open for lunch late. We came in at 5 pm super hungry because we had a late breakfast and were able to order from the full menu. Got some beer and a picada which came with two kinds of cheese and delicious cold cuts: mortadella, prosciutto and jamón cocido. Also came with membrillo (quince) and sun dried tomatoes. The bread was amazing, too! We also got two empanadas, the steak with wild mushrooms and the tucumana which is steak with potatoes in some sort of stew. The empanadas here were probably the best I've had in the city, because fried always beats baked! Yum . We also got the cola de cuadril, medium rare, which came with au jus (Delish!) and thick cut French fries. The meat was just perfect. We also got a glass of the house made lemonade to cool off and it knocked our socks off. Finished off with budín de pan with dulce de leche which we only ordered because we are gordas, and some cortados to close off our Argentinian vacay. Do yourself a favor, come here, sit outside, and have a long, relaxed lunch or dinner. You won't regret it. read more
