Soups on! I've…read morewanted to attend the Soup & Rice event they have for some time... but like so much, then the pandemic happened. This month however I made my way over and it was a gear event, worth it! It is a donation event, so you pay what you can; they give the proceeds to a charitable organization; this month it was Care for Real, which fights food insecurity. Each month they have volunteers bring a variety of soups or soup-like dishes. This month there was seolleongtang, a Korean soup; a couple of curries; a corn and coconut soup; and Italian sausage and kale soup. My favorite was the sausage and kale; irresistible. I also tried the battleship curry and it was so good! I've never had a curry that had cheese in it. It didn't taste all that different from lots of other curries and it wasn't particularly spicy, but it was great. There was rice to accompany it, and some sweets too. One person brought some inigiri which I love. All in all it was a fun night. There were about 25 people total. I'm looking forward to the next few months and I'm already trying to figure out what soup I'd like to bring.

When we moved to Chicago and then for many years after there was considerable racism against Japanese immigrants. JASC was a safe haven for my mother's generation. Today, ethnocentric White people have decided they know better than Japanese how to make ramen, how to make sushi, how to be Buddhist. But the wonderful open minded Americans who come here to learn some authentic Japanese cuisine and art, I think you're great. I learned origami from my mother, but actually the class here is better.

I attended an information session today and everyone was so kind and welcoming. They also provided an incredible food spread. The space is very warm and inviting. Really positive atmosphere. It was a lovely two hour event, which included socializing, an ice breaker, a writing exercise, and a Q&A. They offer a wide variety of classes, workshops, fellowships, and free events too. Lots of ways to become involved and find your writing community. I look forward to participating more in the future.

I believed I was joining a reputable, nurturing organization for writers. Unfortunately, what began as an act of goodwill became one of the most disappointing experiences I've had with any arts organization. Despite showing up, completing my shift, and following up multiple times in good faith, my volunteer credit was never honored until I had to chase it down months later. Worse, after being told I'd be contacted for future opportunities, I was met with total silence--no returned calls, no responses to emails. Then, seeing new volunteer positions advertised publicly while I was still waiting for even a basic reply was frankly demoralizing. To make matters worse, when I finally did receive a response, it included vague recollections and misplaced blame about my punctuality--something that had already been cleared and verified by their own staff as a harmless scheduling miscommunication caused by conflicting information from the studio itself. Instead of accountability or an apology, I received an impersonal brush-off and a polite "we're all staffed up." As a writer and volunteer who genuinely believed in StoryStudio's mission, I expected better--basic professionalism, follow-through, and respect for the people who donate their time to keep the organization running. What I encountered instead was disorganization, poor communication, and a disappointing disregard for volunteers who aren't part of the inner circle. For new writers looking for a supportive creative home, I'd urge caution. Writers deserve better than to be ghosted by the very spaces that claim to nurture them.

When your child is newly diagnosed with autism, you want piece of mind. Orange gave our family just…read morethat during a very difficult time in our lives. Brooke humbly introduced herself via a private moms group on Facebook in response to my inquiry (well, plea) for help, for my three year old son. When you are thrust into the world of autism, it is extremely overwhelming to navigate and ensure your child has the right mix of services, with the right educators; who understand, care and believe in your child as an individual. Fortunately, in Illinois, most ABA (Applied behavior analysis) therapies are covered by insurance, but my biggest fear was, "Will they truly SEE my child, or will he be just another number, repeating scripts at a table?" Not when your child is part of the Orange Therapy family. Brooke, the director of Orange Pediatric Therapy, prides herself on creating an environment that operates and feels like family. For instance, she gave me her cell phone during our informational session! She texts clients. She is attentive, determined, enthusiastic, KIND and in lock-step with her team. Her clinic, much like her, is bright, warm, fun and purposeful. My 3 yo son is thriving, under Brooke's leadership and her "family" of licensed therapists, who are rigorously vetted and mentored under her wing. Orange also serves as a practicum site for the supervision and training of grad students. They are so lucky to have the BCBA's they do to be teaching and learning from. They truly are learning from the best of the best. There is no revolving door here and everyone is just happy! Through Brooke's unique approach to ABA therapy, which is based in play and utilizes floor time, my son is focusing, requesting, turn-taking, using eye contact and responding to his name - and, most importantly, he is HAPPY. And, we are, too - because we know he is in the absolute best hands with Brooke and her team.
