All on the one block of land, there's the adoption centre and a big RSPCA pet store, where, if you adopt an animal, you can go straight away to stock up on things to care for your new pet. Upon walking into the adoption centre, staff are friendly and welcoming and eager to help if you have any questions about the process or need advice about what type of animal to adopt. All animals available for adoption are in the RSPCA database, so you can actually search online before going there. It's mostly dogs available for adoption here, but I saw some little guinea-pig hutches and a few cats too. The dogs are each kept in their own little room with a screen telling you their name, breed, age, with a little bit of information about their temperament and needs. Some of them have a half door open through which you can reach in and give them a cuddle. Adopting a dog from RSPCA will set you back around $300, but they come desexed and vaccinated, so it's pretty good value and you get to give a dog a new home.

This was a bit disappointing as the Brisbane City Council website makes out that this is an adoption centre. If looking to adopt a dog on this side of town, best to head to the RSPCA centre at Wacol.

As soon as we got there, multiple volunteers were happy to talk, answer any questions and take kitties out of their cages for us to pat and play with. The cats looked well cared for and in good health. For me, choosing just one cat was a very different decision, and my partner and I spent well over an hour at the shelter. I apologised to the volunteers for taking so long to come to a decision, but they reassured me that I have nothing to apologise for as it's a very big decision and the last thing they want is for us to go home with the wrong pet for our lifestyle. Finally, I came to the decision of adopting a gorgeous domestic medium-hair kitty named Lilo. The volunteers were very helpful throughout the entire process, providing us with a cardboard box carrier and blanket free of charge, going through all necessary paperwork, and showing us which brand/type of food and litter we needed to purchase to help the cat transition into her new home. Overall, I had a very positive experience at this shelter, and will definitely be coming back if I decide to get another furry baby!

I also detest pet stores that sell puppies and kittens (there should be a law passed that bans this.) But recently, I adopted a dog and went a little nuts over new collars, leads, toys, bedding and yes - doggy pyjamas. City Farmers at Underwood was a little responsible for that. This place is a one stop shop for all your pet needs, they have so many varieties of all of the above that you could literally spend hours there. There are so many cool toys, and so many doggy (and kitty) treats that I found myself buying up big. They have a loyalty program as well that I recommend signing up for. if you spend over $200 you are able to redeem a certain amount of points and get a discount. I think it equates to a 5% discount over time. They also have regular discounts on pet food and accessories, and its a significant saving ie 20% on premium pet foods. Its best to hang out for one of these sales rather than buying when prices are at their norm. There are City Farmers stores all over Brisbane as well, in fact a new one just opened up at Holland Park (a little closer to home) which I just *have* to check out soon.

Weird. In truth, what I think they're trying to convey is that they have a comprehensive range of pets, animal accessories and pet food as well as the know how to match. Having checked out their store and bought a couple of tetras as a gift for a friend's aquarium I'd have to agree. And before I go on to catalogue the impressive animal inventory on offer I'd like to point out that these guys do not support the ethically dubious practice of 'puppy farming' that some other bigger chains do, instead adopting out cats and dogs (not necessarily the cute juvenile ones) from animal welfare groups in an admirable not-for-profit venture. Kudos guys... OK, public service message aside these guys have: birds, fish, cute as a button baby turtles, lizards (blue-tongues, various 'dragons'), snakes and even pet insects. That's right, INSECTS ( I spotted some very interesting and well camouflaged leaf insects for sale)! Their range of healthy pet food has equal 'wow' factor. There are heaps organic meats and bones for your dog, even vegetarian equivalents of old favourite pet snacks like the vege pig's ear. They don't…read moresell puppies or kittens which I think is the most important way of judging a pet store because pet stores that sell puppies and kittens not only support puppy farms and dodgy breeders, but also encourage the impulse purchase of an animal that requires a great deal of commitment. The staff at Petbarn are knowledgeable and helpful, and are all animal lovers with lots of experience in pet care. The range of fish and aquarium products here is excellent and they have staff dedicated specifically to helping you establish and maintain your own aquarium. Another thing I like about Petbarn is that pets on leads are welcome, so if you need to get your dog a new collar for example, you can actually bring them in to see what fits (and you can count on them getting cuddles and treats from the staff as well!). Petbarn has a wide variety of pet products including foods, grooming products, accessories, toys, and treats. They also sell some medications such as worming and flea treatments. The staff here are happy to consult with you about whatever pet advice you need. Many times I've come into Petbarn to seek advice about my fish tank and have had a long, helpful conversation with a staff member and then gone home without needing to buy anything because the staff don't push you to buy things in return for their help. For this reason, whenever I need to buy anything for my dogs or aquarium, I head to Petbarn. They also have a customer loyalty card and lots of information about obedience, puppy pre-school, and other pet activities.
