Our server was very sweet as well. We got horchata to drink. It was delicious but VERY sweet. My friend got chicken in red sauce and it was really good. I can't wait to go back for the food! Inside the restaurant, the devour was...interesting. We were sat under a big tv playing Latinx music. I didn't mind the music but the tv light was annoying. I called on the phone at 12:58 and was told the food would be ready in about 30 min. Around 1:30 we arrived and had to wait about an additional 15 so that was the only downside. The upside was that the pupusas were extremely big and delicious. I had ordered 3 for myself and was only able to eat 1.5. We got chicken and mixed to try. We also got tacos de asada to try out. I love Katarina's. Whenever I want a plato tipico, I come here and enjoy a meal of eggs, beans, fried plantains, and some pupusas. Everything is authentic, and it's nice to come here without buying a ticket to Central America. Also, picking up several pupusas for a crowd is always a favorite! This place serves authentic food from El Salvador. The owner and managing staff are family and originally from El Salvador. The restaurant is named after the daughter, Katarina. There is a parking lot at this location so I'd recommend it highly for people who are willing to make the trip over. The restaurant doubles as a nightclub so be sure to enter and stay to the right of you want the restaurant! After you are seated, take a look around at the painted walls. These were all painted by the restaurant owner and staff! Such talent! Once you're done looking at the walls, glance over the menu to see all the wonderful options. If you haven't had a pupusa, you must have one here. That's a native dish. It is worth the drive all the way to Parma. The Beef Soup was literally a pot of soup. I had two more dinner servings. The seasoning was so tasty. In addition to beef it had yuca, carrots, zucchini and cabbage. We also shared the Pupusa Loca. The Loca has all 11 ingredients. Putting some of the pickled cabbage and seasoned tomato sauce really topped it off. Very authentic so enjoy the El Salvadoran feel. read more

I highly highly recommend trying this place. My husband and I came here on a date and had never been here before. We were seated pretty quickly by a really nice hostess and waitress. The dining room was decorated nicely-really bright and artistic. Usually, there is live music. The stage was pretty big and would probably be a fun time. There's also a bar-doublyba fun time. So, this is one of three similar-type businesses that have been bookmarked forever. This past weekend I finally checked it out! First of all, I was with a friend who is vegan. The server didn't really bat an eye when she ordered her pupusas sans cheese. And, yes, they did come out as ordered. This place is the real deal for authentic Salvadorian food. We came in with the intention of getting pupusas but the tacos looked so good. We ordered 3 chorizo tacos and they were amazing! Some of the best chorizo I've ever had. The pupusas were wonderful as well. The only thing that was a little disappointing to me was the curtido (cabbage slaw for topping the pupusas). It was not as spicy and fresh as I've had at other places. Not that there was anything wrong with it, it just wasn't my favorite here, and I usually LOVE it. My friends and I ordered a bunch of orders of pupusas of different kinds to go along with a large order of plantains. Pupusas are small round corncakes and is the national dish of El Salvador. We ordered pork, mixed, spinach, cheese, and loroco and honestly, all of them were so good. Pupusas also come with pickled cabbage and a big serving of tomato sauce. The cabbage was a great side to have with the pupusas, adding something fresh and light to the dish. The plantains were also great and came with sour cream/refried beans. I am usually a water drinker, but decided to give one of their local drinks a try. I ordered a Tamarindo (sweet and sour) drink to start which was very refreshing and somewhat fruity. My colleague and I shared several different pupusas...the revuelta (chicharron, beans and rice, chicken) and a loca [all 11 ingredients] which was seriously larger than the plate it was served on! We also had a side of fried plantains with beans and crema. The pupusas were great! Large, filled pocket sandwiches that paired great with the thin picante-like sauce and vinegary slaw served on the side. The plantains were large, plump and sticky-sweet from the caramelization placed upon them. Served alongside deliciously creamy beans accompanied by crema it was a decadent side dish to enjoy alongside our main dishes. Pupusas were a little drier than I've had previously (salsa really helped with this), and the slaw was much too salty for my taste. What is the definition of faith? Getting takeaway and believing that that little ziploc of the tomato sauce won't explode in the car. Prices have gone up a little since my last review, but c'mon $2.50 for a pupusa (more for the flour version) is still ridiculously cheap. They are always fresh from the grill and blistering hot. Tostones are hit and miss, but that is the nature of plantains and unavoidable. Crema is the real deal. They've completely remodeled the indoors. Out with the generic Mexican-ish look, to something almost classier, but definitely more functional. They've also added a stage. Apparently they have DJs Friday and Saturday nights. Yum! The first time I had pupusas was at a catered event but these are soooo good fresh. We got the mixed and loroca, and enjoyed both with mine being the loroca due to its fragrant flavor and simplicity while my boyfriend's being the mixed due to it's addition of meat and refried beans. I usually think the bean flavor is really strong, so I enjoyed getting the chance to actually taste loroca, an el savadorian edible flower. I know it is often paired with the tomato salsa and coleslaw, but I personally did not care for those and thought they were great alone, especially when eaten hot and the cheese is all gooey! I thought the tacos were pretty good, with good flavor in the steak. I would have enjoyed some salsa to add some acidity to the taco beyond the lime. It did also come with radish. We also got a dish of refried beans and fried plantains. They came out hot and delicious, with plenty for two. I love going to these types of places because I get to try so many new things, and feel more comfortable ordering a variety because it's so inexpensive! Drove by this place last summer with a friend and the name intrigued me. I looked it up and lo and behold- it was highly rated! Fast forward to this past week. I had plans to meet a friend for dinner but where? I sent her the link to Pupuseria Katerina, along with a few other choices. She chose this one! We chose an early start time, arriving just before 5pm on a Tuesday. Not a busy weekday for any restaurant, so I wasn't surprised that we were the first dinner customers. Our server was sweet, we later found out that her mom is the chef-owner and they have been in business since 2015. We decided to go with the highly rated pupusas, because when in El Salvador, right? My friend ordered one of the breakfast meals for perspective, served all day. I also ordered a side order of plantains. Both Corn and Rice pupusas are offered so I tried one of each. To be honest, I really couldn't tell which was which. For the filling I chose one with spinach and cheese and the other with cheese and loroco, a flower native to El Salvador. Both were delicious! The pupusa exterior looked a bit like a round pita pocket but was much softer and fresher. We were given a bowl of pickled cabbage slaw and a smooth salsa to top the pupusas. Everything was delicious. My plantains were perfect with a delicious sweet caramelization. Plantains are a bit sweet for my friend's tastes, but she dipped them into the side of crema that came with her breakfast, and decided they were delicious when eaten that way. The crema was like a silky smooth sour cream but with more flavor. They offer horchata as a traditional drink but I decided to go with tamarind juice, as I had never tried it. Very good - sweet and tangy at the same time - but I could have used a glass about half the size. A little goes a long way, but definitely worth trying. Other than the fact that other than one take-out customer who picked up several large bags of food - we were the only patrons the entire 90 minutes that we were there (service was quick but we were talking a LOT!) the only issue I can think of is that it was cold inside. So cold that my friend kept her winter coat, scarf and hat on throughout the entire meal. I took mine off, but I wasn't warm by any means. If you're looking for something different and delicious- please give this place a try. We are fortunate to have so many different and delicious food options from around the world right here in Cleveland and this place really deserves your visit! read more

Went here for lunch at 1pm on a Wednesday. The restaurant was mostly barren - not just in terms of guests, but also servers. I stood by the "Please wait to be seated" sign for about 10 minutes before a server finally recognized me and gave me a seat. I ordered the pork, chicken and spinach pupusas along with a side of plantains. Then waited for about 25 minutes until my food arrived. The food was hot and definitely fresh, but I wonder how the kitchen would be able to handle busier times with this type of pace. The plantains were my favorite part of the meal. Cooked to the right level of crunchiness, the sweetness from the plantains paired well with the sour cream and refried beans. Not exactly a mixture of flavors that is intuitively tasty, but it worked. The pupusas tasted homemade, from scratch and had some slightly burnt pieces of melted cheese, which I actually enjoy. While flavorful, I wanted some sauce or curry to go along with the pupusas - the slaw and salsa condiments did not do it for me. My first foray into Salvadorian cuisine was neither a bust nor anything exceptional. If I come here again, I would likely do takeout and try other items aside from the pupusas. read more

Honestly this place deserves a 6/5 stars. It is amazing!! Don't let the fact that it doesn't have a website worry you - there are many menu options for anyone. This was my first time trying pupusas and I fell in LOVE. I got one chicken and one jalapeño one and they both were amazing! It's as if a quesadilla and a pita sandwich had a beautiful love child. I didn't know I needed pupusas in my life but I have a feeling I'll be craving this for days. The plantains are also delicious! Perfectly crispy and amazing. The pupusas are fluffy and airy. 2 of them is plenty and cannot be beat for $4. A little different from the more crispy ones at Pupuseria La Bendicion. Both restaurants serve up delicious food. I will support both and alternate visits. Pupuseria Katarina has a slight edge in ambiance with the paint, music and videos. Yes I am a fan of this place! It's located right off of I-176 so it's easy to get to. The inside has the typical Central America restaurant decor with lively colors, landscape paintings, and birds. When I first walked in there was no one to greet me but a gentleman quickly showed up and we had a pleasant conversation about the menu. I went with a variety of pupusas at $2 each since that is what this place is known for. I also opted for the sweet plantains, refried beans, and homemade sour cream platter which came in at $6. (Prices are great here!) Pupusas are like a stuffed pancake but made with masa - a corn dough. The garlic and cheese pupusa smells amazing and the Revuelta with pork, beans and cheese is the most popular pupusa, but they have other flavors with chicken, exotic flower, jalapeno, spinach or zucchini. The pupusas come with a simple but tasty cabbage slaw (no mayo base here) and a thin tomato sauce. They're about 5 inches in diameter and two are enough of a meal to fill you up; A simple tasty meal! I found the fried plantains, refried beans, and homemade sour cream to all be pretty tasty as well. I can't stress enough how good simple authentic Salvadoran food is!
