First I eat, then I shop. I ate this week on Thursday and ordered enough for leftovers through Saturday. The barbacoa and chorizo tacos are huge and with a few bites from my beans and rice sides had me stuffed. The condiment bar is great for onions, cilantro and pickled veg. There is also a good selection of salsas--the roasted tomato is fire--literally! it's so delicious. The thing I really appreciate is the food is so flavorful but is not overly salted. After lunch i always swing through the store to stock up on dried chilis, LaVictoria staples and my favorite summer beer--Tecate in a can. LaPlaza is a taqueria with weekend specials and your beverage choices are Mexican Coke, Jarritos and horchata. They do have Pepsi fountain drinks, but I treat myself to the Coke. So good! read more

One of the best places to get tacos in Cleveland! I got 3 tacos, and they came FILLED with carne asada. As soon as I got my tacos, I went to the toppings bar and went wild. The store has meat, fish sections, and even a pharmacy on the main level. The lower level contains what seemed like jewelry store but I didn't explore there. It's a treasure trove for those seeking authentic ingredients or unique finds not commonly available in mainstream supermarkets. They have everything from piñatas to cacti in the produce section. They also have a lot of souvenirs at the front of the store and the aisles - candles, authentic cookware, figurines, sombreros, and other fun things. I bought chocolate and chocolate wafers at this store. I also grabbed a pastry from the bakery. I was really impressed with the wise range of choices for sweets. There were 1 1/2 aisles of them! I was underwhelmed by the number of coffee choices, there were only a few. I have yet to try the chocolate and my pastry. Authentic Mexican is hard to find, especially with the toppings cart. I love that you can add cilantro onions pickled onions to your liking. I love a good corn taco and ordered three different ones. The only thing that other reviews have stated is that they don't list prices. It seems that each taco is approximately $3.50 based on our order which is a little pricey for what the prices these stalls are known for. The most authentic tacos you'll get in Cleveland. Sadly because of their popularity, prices have gone up over the years, but they've also been able to expand their seating area and separate from the actual grocery store. Parking is a little tight in the adjacent parking lot, but street parking is usually aplenty. Pass through the small outdoor patio and enter an array of aromas. The menu has grown, but my advice is to focus on the tacos. Efficiency is their specialty - you order, they hand you your receipt, and you get your food in short order from the counter. No small talk or schmoozing. These are traditional Mexican tacos - double corn tortilla with a heaping serving of protein. Chicken tinga? You got it. Carnitas? Obviously. Lengua? It's yours. The best part is being able to customize your salsas at the salsa bar so you don't have to pick out all the onions or cilantro that someone might inadvertently put in. It does make it a little inconvenient if you're getting things to go, since you have to pack up all these little cups of sauce and toppings, and the tortilla shells don't hold up well for too long so try to eat these fresh if you can. The vegetarian options for tacos are pretty limited, but buy a baby-sized burrito filled with beans, cheese, tomatoes, and rice and you'll be pretty satisfied. Occasionally they'll have a rich soup like Posole that'll warm you right up. Guac comes in a hefty tub and pile of chips that you'll keep eating until you're stuffed with sodium and corn. My realtor brought us here to recoup during a full day of house hunting, and it was well worth the visit! We had chips, guacamole, and an order of tacos each. I don't eat a lot of meat, so I had chicken. The tacos were really good, and they really stuff them full of meat. The chicken was well cooked, julcy, and shredded. Yum! They are street tacos, but you can doctor them up any which way at the salsa/toppings bar. Okay, if you want to cook Hispanic foods you must go to a market with their foods, such as ancho chilies. Limes, avocados and cilantro are so much cheaper than regular American markets. This is a tough review. The Mercado is a 4 to 4 and a half. The taqueria today was a two to two and a half. The Mercado has beautiful produce and a very nice meat counter. Brush up on your Spanish because not everyone speaks Inglese. Lots of cheeses and fresh tortillas albeit refrigerated. Very friendly staff. The taqueria was a little disappointing. The chorizo wasn't cooked hard enough. I like it a bit crispy. The Al pastor had the texture of a braise and not cooked on an el trompo. It definitely never saw a flat top for a sear. The tripe was pretty much inedible. I've had tripe fried and crispy and stewed and fall apart. This was neither. It had the texture of over cooked clams. I have a full set of teeth but after 5 minutes of chewing and making no progress I had to spit it out into a napkin. The fresh chorizo I bought and seared hard in a cast iron was excellent. The meat is incredibly flavorful yet simple and you add whatever toppings at the salsa bar. The quesadilla is on a flour tortilla and is made with Munster and is so tasty. You can go cheese or add the meat, I usually switch off but today was a barbacoa quesadilla and it was packed to the brim with meat and cheese, so awesome! Hailing from Chicago I had a plethora of fantastic taquerias to choose from and now I'm realizing just how spoiled I was. I have no idea how this place has such a high rating. I tried the steak burrito, pastor taco, chorizo taco, and pork tamales. The steak was decent quality but the flavor was not there, and they put way too much rice in their burritos. Stopped at La Plaza since I was in Lakewood for the Yelp Elite Event and I wanted to grab lunch. Located at the front of the Latin supermarket La Plaza has a cafe serving genuine Mexican food. Luckily for me they had Chili Relleno on the specials menu. For $10 I got a huge pepper stuffed with cheese batter dipped and fried, sided with beans and rice and some soft corn tortillas. The chili relleno was good with the sauce really making it special, the refried beans and rice were excellent. What really makes La Plaza special is the salsa bar with great house made salsas and other condiments. I would strongly recommend trying the roasted jalapenos and onions. Overall a big portion of really tasty food and with the ability to compliment the food with authentic salsas and other condiments.
