I should've ordered two dang delish. Then the Quesadilla de Queso / Cheese Quesadilla which comes with fries I did not know. Delivered by my fabulous Dasher. So polite and such a nice smile! I don't usually write bad reviews, but this restaurant was the worst that I have ever been to. I told the (rude) hostess what I wanted, and we ended up getting HALF of what we ordered and some of another order. I have eaten carne asada before and never received it. We also received a shrimp dish. When I called to complain, the rude hostess said they don't do shrimp dishes and that what I was saying must not be true. I hung up once I got accused of lying. Stay away from this place! I also hate the smell of cigarettes that greets you as you walk in. The area is also very sketchy. Carry pepper spray at all times! read more

Another day, another stop on the Kingston taco trail but this one specializes in pupusas. Pupuseria Mi Ranchito tends to get lost in a see of tacos and Mexican food across the Midtown corridor. My favorite here is the sweet corn tamale with cream. Very much like a cornbread pudding. Dessert if you ask me. The curtido is the draw. Pile that pickle vegetable high and over everything. Ordered the chicharron with cassava fries. The pork was on the dry side and hardly any crispy skin. Fried cassava was excellent. I'd stick with the pupusas. Can't go wrong with any of the variations. At first look this appears to be a dive bar, and it is, sort of. Except don't expect to see rows of drunken people passing out on the bar. It's actually a really great place to have Salvadoran food. I've been here many times and maybe once in twenty visits did I ever see anyone actually drunk. I do see , however, lot's of parole enjoying this food. For me the yucca frita con chicharone(forgive my spelling), the pupusa-of all types and the tamales con pollo are what I LOVE here! Everything is always cooked to perfection, the yucca and chicharone is perfect. The yucca is light and crispy and not at all oily and the chunks of pork are crispy yet moist and tender with just the right amount of fat left on the pieces. The pupusas are delicious and not greasy like I've had a t some places. And the tamales, we'll.... Let's just say I'm making room in my freezer to bring a bunch home the next time I go so i can stock up. My wife, an avid soup junky, is in love with the sopa de res. We will sometimes call to see if they have it before we take the 35 minute drive. If the have it she asks them to save one for her (in case) and if not we'll hold off for another day. If I were to rate this place on the food and friendliness it would be five stars. It loses points for decor and ambience. These things seriously don't bother me but I just want to let you know for those who find that important. The service is great. There's usually only one person I can remember actually seeing there -always. I would say that being spoiled by my mother and aunts making pupusas my entire life makes me a little biased. Nonetheless, the pupusas here were excellent. The proportion of masa to filling was great, they were not overly greasy, and the taste was flavorful. These pupusas were among the most delicious foods I ever ate. Hand made doughy filled and lightly grilled breads which (per instruction) we topped with their sides of delicious pickled cabbage, sour cream, and sauce (red tomato based and green Chile based) - it was as delicious as my grandmother's incredible homemade cooking with equal parts tremendous experience and skill, fresh ingredients, and love and tender care. Assembled at home, the pupusas could not have been more fresh and delicious. I felt as if I had invited myself into the home of a loving Salvadoran grandmother who hand made these specially for me. Along with the different pupusas, vegetable and bean based, we ordered tamales. These Salvadoran tamales were wrapped in banana leaves instead of corn husks, and then wrapped tightly in aluminum foil. Opening and unraveling the foil revealed warm hand-pressed corn deliciousness. Again, I was reminded of my beloved grandmother's cooking - the highest of complements. They were incredibly delicious as well; both the savory ones and mildly sweet corn tamales. What a surprise to find a Salvadoran restaurant in the area! We looked up a pupuseria when we were watching my niece one weekend. She's 2 and loves pupusas. We were so glad to find this place! We've visited a lot, almost once a month or more. The pupusas are delicious. My husband orders the tamal d'elote and really enjoys it. He usually shares with my little niece too. He order the pupusas de chicharrón and also enjoys them every time. I usually order the pupusas de queso con frijol and they are always so good and settle my cravings. Everyone else we've brought to eat here usually enjoys the food. We order takeout more often than we eat there. Sometimes it's too loud for my taste and I rather take my pupusas home to enjoy. Whether at the restaurant or at home, this is a great place to eat! It will continue to be one of my favorite places in Kingston. read more

This El Salvadorean eatery may count as adventurous; not necessarily because of the food, but because the usual signs that you might find yourself having a good meal are initially absent. A tired-looking awning leads to a scarred, heavy door that opens reluctantly into a crepuscular realm dominated by a heavy, dark wood bar stretching off into the apparently empty gloom. You could be in any Malone's Pub in any city in the Northeast. All that's missing is a solitary old guy with a burst-raspberry nose weeping silently into his beer. So, weird for an "ethnic" restaurant, right? There is also, disconcertingly, zero smell of food. It's tempting to turn tail at this point, but persist! This ain't "ethnic" - it's where the local transplants from El Salvador go to eat real food from home. By and by, a friendly gentleman will approach and provide you with a dog-eared menu that opens up a whole, delicious world of crispy, cheesy pupusas (el Salvador's grilled cheese "pockets"), thick, meaty stews and much besides. We were on our way to a function, so probably also a wee bit (way) overdressed. Place is pretty divey and not all that welcoming; Spanish is the predominant language spoken here. We ordered cheese, pork, and refried bean pupasas to-go. Came with a medium-spicy salsa verde and tart-salty pickled red cabbage, great cool crunchy and herby foil to the hot, chewy, crisped, pupusas. The cheese ones were oozy, stringy, salty, almost to excess, but so good; the bean-filled were smooth and salty; the pork was pulled and tender, slight spice of chilis, perked up with a squeeze of lime. All were very generous portions. The best was the shrimp with tomato sauce. The translation does not do the meal the honor it deserves. I really like this place. It's a spanish bar with really good spanish food. I tried my first pupusas here and I really liked them. They come with a nice cabbage salad (forgot what they call it) and it's good. My fav. is the one with pork! I also had their carne asada with rice and beans which was very yummy too, well seasoned and fresh tasting. Now the people that visit are mostly spanish people that speak spanish, yes, but it still has a nice atmosphere to sit and have drinks and hang. If you get intimidated by that type of thing, then I wouldn't come here. The people at the bar go to have a good time and drink and sometimes even sing over the mic! Now they all don't have the best voices, but it's funny and entertaining! LOL! They do play music, so sometimes it isn't quiet around the bar, but you can ask to be seated in the back seating area. It is much quieter back there and a family or couple can sit and enjoy their meal separated from everyone. Drinks are always very strong and inexpensive. Shots are inexpensive too. They have a simple but very good margarita. Staff is also very accommodating and friendly. When my boyfriend and I walk in and sit, the waitress immediately comes over and says "Shots? Jose? 2?" Their pupusas were so good! And they were only $2 a piece. You can't beat that price for that flavor. I got beans, chicken, and pork. I liked chicken the most but they were all great. And their sauces are to die for! They have a green spicy one and a regular red one. My favorite was the spicy green one which was actually spicy and did a good job clearing my sinuses. There didn't seem to be too many choices in the immediate area, and we LOVE a good pupusa, so we were super happy to find this place on the Yelp mobile app. We sat at the bar. There may have been more tables at the back. We later heard this used to be a pretty-well known bar, but had been taken over by new owners. The pupusas themselves were very good, and the curtido (pickled cabbage salad) was above average. The chicharrones were a bit over-cooked, but tasty! Yes, it seems to be a bar (mostly frequented by spanish speakers) with some food available. Bring earplugs, the jukebox (evidently filled with spanish cowboy music) is cranked up to 11 and makes any conversation difficult, if not impossible. Pupusas, about $2 each with curtido and sauce. Lots more on the menu, but it was kind of dark inside and I could not read all the menu items. Good taste, but El Rey del Pollo III (next door) is less divey and quieter. read more
