Nexus Real Estate - Various photos of ceilings above several bays in the garage

    Nexus Real Estate

    Brookline

I've been a Nexus resident at 2123 Shady for about two years and overall it's been a good place to…read morelive. For Squirrel Hill, the price is a good value for the amount of space and the location. This was by far the best choice for something under 2k. There were really cramped places for much less, and only slightly nicer units for hundreds more. I apologize for the lengthy post; this is intended for those seriously considering the Square Apartments, with all its ups and downs. The building has clearly improved through renovations over the years. The courtyard is a nice feature with benches and space for kids or dogs, though a little more shade from trees would make it even better since the afternoon sun can get strong. Accessibility improvements to the courtyard from the ground floor would also be a nice addition. We lived in the third-floor central loft unit, which is a unique layout with two levels, extra storage, and a washer and dryer in the unit. That was a big convenience since most other units use the shared machines in the basement. For fans of hardwood, the floor is laminate, which wasn't my taste. There were a handful of places where the paint was peeling, but those stood out against a nicely renovated unit. On the bright side, our unit had nice tall ceilings and more usable space than I anticipated. Maintenance was generally handled well. Sometimes larger items required a follow-up message, but smaller things like light fixtures, towel hooks, or drains were fixed quickly and professionally. Kevin and Josh on the maintenance team were especially helpful. Shout to my boy Kevin for also teaching me how to do a lot of the repairs. If I had to do it again, I would have only done one year here, since my wife had trouble being on the third floor during her pregnancy. The garage is a bit of a hike without elevators and all, but boy were we glad to have it all, especially after all these crazy storms. I hesitated to give a full 5 stars, but after speaking with Samantha and Ashton, we couldn't have gotten better help. In the past, we would have to resubmit maintenance requests several times. When Samantha started as maintenance manager, we were able to get things in order much quicker. We are enjoying our new washer and dryer, and are grateful for the AC unit replacement. Ashton in the leasing office helped us find a transfer since the third floor is tough for my pregnant wife, and we are excited for the move. We will miss this perfect location, not ten minutes from both Forbes Avenue and Frick Park. Overall we appreciated the space, the location, and the improvements that have been made to the property.

My experience with Nexus has been truly ridiculous…read more I scheduled an in person tour a week out. And I confirmed through what I believe to be a chat-bot two times before the tour. Less than 12 hours before the tour, at 1 in the morning, the chat-bot cancelled it saying it wasn't an available time, and asked if I would like to reschedule. I called their local office the following morning (Saturday) and left a voicemail expressing my frustrations and my number for them to reach back out. I have yet to hear from them. Instead I have gotten relentless texts and emails, again from chat-bots. I hope to never rent from them.

Airtech Radon - Radon system interior view

    Airtech Radon

I hired this company to mitigate radon in my 1950s home, which has clay soil under the slab and an…read moreinterior French drain system around the basement. In my opinion, they did very little investigation before starting the job. Their first attempt was simply installing a sub-slab suction point without tying into the French drain system at all. They left a monitor for a few days, and the radon levels did not change. About a month later, they came back and added another suction point. This time, they ran piping across the basement to tie into part of the French drain system. The frustrating part is that there were easier access points near the original system, including the sump area or the channel leading into the sump, that could have been evaluated first. Again, they left the monitor for a few days, and the radon levels still did not change. Another month later, they returned and added a 2nd sub-slab suction point in the center of the basement. Still no real improvement. At that point, they told me I needed to seal cracks around the basement, so I did. That also did not fix the problem. Their next suggestion was to stack two fans to increase suction. I did not feel comfortable with that approach. I felt it made more sense to use a properly sized higher-suction fan rather than stacking fans and hoping for the best. Eventually, I decided to stop using this company and troubleshoot the issue myself. During that process, I discovered they had only tied into half of my French drain system. My house actually has two separate French drain sections, which they never identified. Once I added a suction point into the second French drain system and upgraded to a higher-pressure fan with good airflow, the system finally started working the way it should. My setup is now basically a hybrid system: three sub-slab suction points and two French drain suction points. In hindsight, I believe if both French drain systems had been properly investigated and tied in from the beginning, some of the extra sub-slab work may not have been necessary. Overall, my biggest frustration is that there did not seem to be a real diagnostic process. It felt like they were guessing, waiting weeks between visits, and hoping the numbers would eventually drop during warmer weather. But radon is often worse in the winter because of stack effect, so a temporary drop in summer does not necessarily mean the problem is fixed. Based on my experience, I would not recommend this company for a difficult radon mitigation situation, especially in an older home with interior French drains and clay soil. If the house was built with gravel under the slab, they would probably do great. However, my experience with them has been terrible . So terrible that I had to figure this out on my own. If I could give them 0 stars, I would.

With levels high, they refused to come out quickly and I had to get another company to come in to evaluate the problem. The other company said there were obvious problems with the system that should have been corrected. Then on the day before the scheduled AirTech appointment, AirTech refused to come out unless I told them what extra work was going to be done, or they would not drive out to my house because it didn't make "business sense".
