I met with Chacy for a few lessons that were awesome. I wanted to improve my turns and fix my bad habits after surfing for a few years on my own. DO NOT PURCHASE SERVICES ONLINE - THIS BUSINESS IS CLOSED! Our family has purchased surfing lessons twice with this business over the last two years and had a great experience. Unfortunately, this year was not the case. We purchased a 2 hour surfing lessons block for 3 family members - this reservation required to pay the cost upfront online. We also included a 20% tip. We received an email receipt of the purchase and reservations. We received a second email confirming the date, time and location of the surfing instructions. The day of the surfing lessons, we arrived 15 minutes early as instructed and waited over an hour for the instructor(s) to arrive. NO ONE SHOWED. I called the listed phone number and the call went straight to voice mail. I drove over to the business store front on Atlantic Ave. and the store was closed indefinitely, all signage and furniture removed and looked like it was in the process of getting completely gutted. I left several messages and no one returned my call. I am currently working with my credit card company who has filed a claim on my behalf to relinquish payment. The online presence for this business is deceiving and should be removed immediately so no one else is mislead. read more

We can't say enough about Chase and his team. Had our two kids, 10&8, up in minutes. Patient, energetic, knowledgeable, safe and fun. I had an issue signing up and he took down my info and added me manually and texted me to make sure it was setup to my liking. Ready to go on time and surfed the whole time. Definitely have good recommendations too. We were only going to do the 1-hour, he said they will just be working the kinks out then. Sure enough at the end of the first hour he was right. Glad we took his advice and went for the two hour lesson. The instructor was in the water cheering them on, giving advice, and teaching them the way. Kids spent the rest of the day surfing. She was standing up on the board after a few waves and excited to find herself surfing for real. I can't recommend Pura Vida and Franky enough. He was welcoming, professional, and extremely patient with our kids. For my 9 year old son's first ever surfing lesson, Franky took the time to explain the basics, stretch with him, and had him riding a wave within a half hour. He then spent the rest of the lesson continuing to work with our son who was super bummed when the lesson was over. All he wanted to do for the rest of the trip was surf with Franky. He took a second lesson the next day which was again great. Even outside our lessons Franky would take time to say hi to our kids and give them pointers. I also appreciated that he took time to talk with us as parents to provide feedback and pointers for our kids, even my daughter who didn't take a formal lesson with him. We also rented boards from Pura Vida which was reasonably priced and incredibly easy. If you're looking for lessons or board rentals in downtown Cocoa Beach, Pura Vida is a reasonably priced and very personal alternative to the more corporate shops. read more

I brought my daughters to town for a cheer competition and was looking for a fun thing to do. I found a groupon for this surf company and booked a 2 hour session for each girl. I cannot recommend Pura Vida and Franky enough. I and my friends had a week meetings in Cocoa Beach and were trying to find things to do to fill the half-day schedule before the departure. One of our colleagues highly recommended Franky to us. He signed up the surfing learning courses for his sons a few days back, and his kids loved Franky a lot. We had never done surfing. It was definitely encouraging for us! We signed the course online. The website is very easy to navigate. It even allows you to pay only 20% up front. You can choose 1 or 2 hour private or group lessons. Very flexible. We signed up 2 hours of group lessons. We called ahead before we were headed over. Apparently, rashguard shits or any type of shirts are highly recommended. I didn't follow what Franky recommended. Had some rashes after surfing, but it was still totally worth it. Of course, a lot of water preventing you from being dehydrated and sunblocks were necessary as well. Franky's store is in Coconut Beach. He was welcoming, professional, and extremely patient. We started with the basics on the ground/beach. Franky took the time to explain the basics and stretches. We only had 3 people in the group lesson. Following Franky's instructions, very shortly three of us were able to stand on the surfing boards and surf! Franky also teams up with photographers. A photographer was taking pictures of us and only charged a very small amount of money for the pictures. It was a great experience and very enjoyable! If you're looking for lessons or board rentals in downtown Cocoa Beach, Pura Vida is a reasonably priced and very personal alternative to the more corporate shops. I highly recommend it! read more

My kids had the best time during their surf lesson. Their instructor was very positive and taught them the basics in land and then they hit the water. They were up riding the wavers in no time at all. The owners are very responsive and friendly and rescheduled us when our first try was cancelled due to lightening. Key problem was instructor was incredibly distracted as soon as we hit the water. He appeared to be babysitting some kid (based on the amount of time he spent talking to the kid) and I had to tell the kid (trying to be nice) to stop getting right in front of us - the instructor should have taken care of that, not me. Then the instructor spent quite a bit of our paid time talking to other people and giving free lessons during our paid lesson. If we were coming back from a run and not on our boards yet is one thing, but literally we are on our boards and he's holding one of them and he just turned away and gave a 5 minute free lesson to a to someone not in our paid group, then another time was having a long conversation which I finally called him back on - he turned around and looked shocked - like "oh I forgot I had PAYING customers here". etc., etc. the whole time. Also, I didn't care that he was 15 minutes late as I expected to still have the full time that I had paid for - nope - they ended the lesson spot on time....we werne't late , he was. So definitely was not worth the price I paid. Location on a beach not packed with tourist is very good though. Just note, no shower or bathrooms nearby. Parking is very limited. read more

Our family was visiting Florida over the holidays and practically lived at the beach. On our fourth day soaking up the sun at the ocean, we decided to give surfing a shot and after making several phone calls we settled on Pure Aloha. It proved to be a WONDERFUL choice. Our family group consisted of a 13-year-old and a 56-year-old and everyone had a blast. The instruction portion of the classes on the sand helped to make everyone feel confident and we all quickly felt comfortable trying to stand and catch waves on our own. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! Pura Vida certainly stood out to me when I researched many of the local surf schools. The other schools felt impersonal and rigid, while Pura Vida was flexible and relaxed. I took lessons with my two daughters (ages 11 and 14). Franky was AWESOME! He was kind and patient. He fully prepared us on land, so when we hit the ocean, everyone was successful and got up on their first try. Excellent service and instruction with our surf lesson!! 4 girls - 3 teenagers and me (40+ aged mom) - all trying for the first time. Franky and his assistant got us up on boards in no time! He was really great at teaching what to do, and working with each girl individually to fix small things so everyone could get up and stay there longer. We had a 2 hour lesson, and it was a great pace, with little down time. All of us girls had more than enough opportunities to catch waves! (Franky was in no rush to end the lesson, I think they would have kept working with us all day, but we were wore out!!) We stumbled upon this surf school - while we were laying on the beach watching him surf, one of the locals reckoned him for lessons. So glad they did! In all, excellent value, highly recommended!! She had the best time and learned a lot! By the end of the 2 hours, she was jumping and changing sides! It's really more like you are joining their ohana which is Hawaiian for extended family than just becoming another student. I live about an hour and a half drive away and drive up to see Pure Aloha Surf and it's well worth the drive. They know everyone at the beach and it's easy to see how much they care for the people and the sport. Highly recommend.
