The barre technique is unusual but they will adjust your posture in class and go over the moves with you before your first class.

I normally go to slt in NYC (which is phenomenal) but have been very curious about sculpt. I went this am and while one class is hardly the means for a rating, I found the studio meh as far as megaformer workouts. Don't get me wrong. This workout is difficult and not geared towards beginnings. The straps, balancing and movements cause one to need a few times to get the gist of it. Add on to the general difficulty! So why 3 stars for sculpt. Playlist and drill sergeant like instruction made the class not fun. She counted 20-19-18.... more repeatedly. Grrrr. I found myself repeated looking at the clock which is something I rarely do. In addition, music was circa 1980s and definitely a feed issue to the stereo because there was a scratchy sound for parts of the class. Moves and corrections were generally very good, however. As I've mentioned with other specialty classes it's the instructor that makes all the difference. I'm super spoiled I live in NYC and fortunately a couple of my favorite folks are not only at the tops in their field, some have even developed cult status (so says allure magazine). Best practices equal always a fresh playlist (I've never heard the same list twice for my favorites), good choreography, energy and corrections. So for $35 a class, I'd hope that I get just that. Otherwise I could go to the free classes at my gym. I think solid core which I rate 4.5 stars is better on instruction and energy, music also could be improved. 3 stars bc any megaformer class is a minimum of ok, but the extra factor is instruction and music.

I take Pilates, yoga (Iyengar) and Pilates Total Fitness (a brutal...brutally awesome!) hybrid class. The yoga classes are great. Each instructor takes the time to correct, and the focus is less on speed and more on holding the pose. While each teacher's style varies (some focus on sequences, others don't) I always walk away feeling that light headed, wobbly muscle yoga feeling. The Pilates practiced at Balance is "Power Pilates" which I've learned is a classic form. I've taken both reformer and mat, and both are great workouts. Last is Pilates Total Fitness. All I have to say is these classes, especially the one with Jane, will make you weep..but in a good way, I promise!

The random ten minute videos on YouTube were fantastic starters, but I realized that I wanted something more so I found Grace, a studio local to me. The first session was free, so it was a good way to get introduced to the place and the people there. So let's start there. I almost had enough time to say hello to the receptionist when she recognized that I was a new face, smiled, and introduced herself to me. She offered a tour to me, which was friendly, but I was surprised that another attendee offered to take me on a tour herself! It was clear to me then that the friendliness was contagious. I really appreciate that the equipment is available at no cost. Having the mats, the blocks, the bands, and even blankets there meant that I could participate at the same level that more experienced yogis could. This first session, I rolled out in the back as Jade started speaking. The whole experience was wonderful, but something she said stood out to me: when someone's phone rang and they apologized, Jade responded with a smile and said "Don't be sorry. This just means someone's thinking of you." And then I knew that the community was eager to share their wisdom and peace with others. On the community board (which highlights members, friends, and local services) I saw that the first month was available for a reduced price, and after such a wonderful first experience, I knew I was going to sign up. I'm almost done with this month and have practiced under different instructors but have found them all incredibly welcoming. I also appreciate the ability to participate from home, which I've done on several occasions, and an equal level of engagement from the instructor. I've had a really positive experience thus far and am excited for many more months of good yoga and community!

I've also taken rise and rest yoga with Lenore. This was a relaxing way to wind down from a busy day. I recently competed a yoga strength class with Amy. This was an all-level class and she offered us options to modify or intensify each move. Amy played a nice mix of songs from her phone during the class; however, the music kept being interrupted by notification dings, which was distracting. Overall, I found Grace Studio to be a decent place for a yoga workout. The studio is equipped with mats, weights, blocks, resistance bands, and bolsters. Instructors offer verbal assists rather than hands-on adjustments for yoga moves. Instructors are welcoming, the studio is bright and inviting, and classes are not crowded.

I have nothing against barre. The workouts in and of themselves are fun and challenging. However,…read morebefore taking classes or entering a membership at this Pure Barre, I'd like to warn you all against a few things. 1) I signed up for a 3 month commitment membership, which came with a set of extra classes. What I was not told, however, was that the extra classes expired after 30 days. Luckily, the studio manager gifted those extra classes back to me - all the same, it would've been nice to know ahead of time. Second of all, I was not made aware that there was a 30 day cancellation notification requirement. So, despite the fact I cancelled 28 DAYS in advance, I was still charged $99 for a membership the next month that I have no intention of using. Please be aware of both of these policies. In my time as a fitness instructor, I've never seen studio so clearly exploitative. 2) While the instructors are nice, many of them give the impression that they don't want to be there. Again, from a fitness instructor perspective, the energy that the instructors bring to class is critical, and when I can tell an instructor doesn't want to be there, it can make the class substantially less enjoyable. If you're considering barre, I'd honestly encourage you to try a different studio than Pure Barre.

False Advertising and Shady Policies - Stay Away!…read more I am extremely disappointed with Pure Barre. Their website is completely misleading. They advertise "no commitment - Cancellation will be effective at the end of the current period for which you have paid" and make it seem like you can cancel anytime--this is NOT true. Once you sign up, you find out there is actually a 30-day cancellation period, which is nowhere clearly stated during sign-up. This is blatant false advertising and completely dishonest. When I reached out to cancel, I was told I had to continue paying for another full month, even though I no longer wanted the service. It feels like a scam designed to trap people into paying more. I expected better from a fitness brand that claims to empower people. Instead, I felt tricked and taken advantage of. If you value honesty and transparency, do yourself a favor and avoid this location.

I know for a fact I'm stronger, leaner, and more flexible than I ever was before barre. I am a huge fan of mixing up all the formats (Empower, Define, Align, Classic, and Reform) and love that I can pick the format fits my mood or body's needs that day. If you haven't done any kind of group fitness before - I highly recommend trying your first class (it's free)! You'll find the instructors incredibly knowledgeable and helpful, and the music is there to guide you to the beat. I can get overstimulated easily, and these classes have never made me feel that way. I'll be honest that the price is what initially made me hesitate before choosing to start a membership a few years ago, but I'm so glad I chose to put my physical health first. (PS - the unlimited package shakes out to about $13 per class if you attend 15 classes per month). Don't know where I'd be if PB wasn't part of my daily routine!

In other group fitness classes that I have taken, the instructors stay at the front of the room and basically complete the same workout as the participants. At Pure Barre, instructors take classes (led by other instructors) because when they are teaching and demonstrating, they aren't getting the intense workout that comes with taking a class. In this review, I also would like to praise the instructors' willingness to work with people with limitations like me. (I have a broken arm that did not heal well). They have great suggestions for modifying exercises. I would encourage anyone who needs a few modifications to give Pure Barre a try. The instructors will have suggestions for you, but they are equally as open to letting you figure out what you need on your own. That kind of flexibility, along with 4 different class formats, keeps me coming back!
