Filled with gorgeous pieces of jewellery, hand bags and other accessories, Tilkah was the kind of store I could easily find myself in all the time. Unfortunately, a combination of my terrible memory and leaving Melbourne meant I forgot what the name of the store. I only recently discovered that they had a Tilkah store here in Sydney, and I recognised the name and from the style of the pieces they had available. They deal with soft leather, vintage style bags and a whole allotment of different jewellery. But warning, you pay a pretty penny for these pieces! Their shop in the Pitt street Westfield is set up exactly as it was in Melbourne. All their jewellery pieces are glittery in the bright lights of the store. I have my eye on one of their sling bags, made of their really soft leather. I just have to wait until the next time I'm allowed to treat myself.

Also have some amazing jewellery and funky frames. And this place teaches me a lesson that you don't have to spend a fortune to look and feel good. Lucky me I saw this skirts rack inside this shop and they are very good quality designer skirts. They are so gorgeous - I wish I can 3 of them - end up buy 2 and save the last for later. They cost me $20 each and you wouldn't get this skirt with this price outside for sure with this quality. Even it's second-hand, it's really in a good nick - as it's new. Definitely will come back again to buy more from this shop. The owner is very friendly and she can do alteration if needed too with cheap price. It seems to me that this store is a haven mostly for that buyer who relishes owning designer clothes for their own merit more than the one who is guided on what to buy by her own style. I found an awesome beaded necklace here that people comment on... I don't tell them it was from Vinnies! Okay, actually I do after a while because I think it's pretty cool. I love to thrift shop since I'm only a casual on a budget and there's some really good finds in the Vinnies that I've visited before. While that still stands true, the customer service was a mess. To put it bluntly, my friend and I were racially profiled. I was in line with my purchases when a girl at the counter looked at me up and down and rudely told me to go to the girl next to her instead. I didn't want to cause a scene, so I said nothing and moved along even though I was already insulted. And the thing is, it didn't end there. My friend is a little darker than me, and she was purchasing something to. We were both in the line at the other girl's aisle, and my friend was only looking at something on the display when the first girl had the audacity to accuse her of stealing something. When we were in line. With our money at hand. Really? The lady serving us apologised for her coworker and my friend overheard a conversation between her and the manager about how it was that girl's second day. Still, that was utterly unacceptable. Good products. But maybe Vinnies should screen their volunteers better.

My eye was caught initially by the fantastical window display being painted by an afro wielding staff member. Every aspect of the shop was both quirky and feminine... From the carefully thought out visual merchandising to the smooth Jazz soundtrack. I spent some time in here trying on things and perusing the racks with the attentive help of two beautiful and charismatic sales assistants. Both I will add, impeccably dressed from head to toe. The designs are unique with a nod to bygone eras. The designer has obviously thought about the modern woman with styles and cuts suitable for a myriad of body types. The boutique also has an extensive collection of shoes and accessories to finish of the look. I left with a bundle of frocks in hand, a smile on my face and a rekindled love for Newtown and all it's quirkiness.

They generally have great customer service and I must say probably the best return policy I have ever seen. It's the normal DJ's with department store layout catering for most things you could desire. Neat and tidy. The food section is one of my favourites. And…read morealthough the St Vincent De Paul Op Shop- henceforth to be known as Vinnies- on Hall St Bondi is not as thrifty as some it has plenty of opportunity to pick up some designer threads and wicked CDs. (I know, I'm sorry, that was a total Dad joke). You never know what you'll find at Op Shops of course and that's a big part of the fun, but there are certain locations that the elves that do the sorting send all the good stuff to (well that's my theory and I'm sticking to it!) and Hall St Vinnies is definitely one of them. They know their labels so you won't find a Dior scarf in the $2 bin. But you will have found a Dior scarf at an Op Shop for 20 bucks and all proceeds go to charity, so you still win! Having said that, I once found a pair of genuine Gucci shades there for $10 so you never know your luck. It's not all designer stuff though, they have the usual array of retro, average, hideous or trendy clothes mostly around the $7 - $12 mark and a decent collection of cool men's t-shirts. Hall St Vinnies also seems to have an unending supply of fantastic CDs and decent books, maybe due to the amount of backpackers that spend enough time in the area to build up a collection and then have to offload it all when they're heading home?
