There were no English menus and the owner spoke very little English but he graciously helped us pick out some seafood for our meal. This was honestly some of the most delicious and fresh seafood I've ever eaten. My wife and I shared a large platter for only 14 Euros. So it's also a very good value. We had made reservations for ten people, but our group arrived in smaller groups over a period of an hour. The Fish Market was very understanding and patient with us, and we happily enjoyed some wine and oysters during this time. When we were finally all together and had ordered, the food was quickly prepared and served. Moreover, the dishes were presented beautifully and in a grand fashion; the portions are not small, at all. I had the pleasure of enjoying the sole (zeetong), which was very delicious, simply serves with a cup of clarified butter. A perfect combination. The rest of the table enjoyed the mussels, the cold seafood platter, and a mixed grill. Everybody enjoyed their food very much, and it must be said that our group included an Australian top chef; she too was impressed by the quality of the food. One batch of mussels were unfortunately cold when they arrived to the table, but when we pointed this out, the host apologized and was happy to take it back and produce a new, fresh serving. The design and atmosphere of the restaurant is interesting; unlike other restaurants, the Fish Market doesn't care for dimly lit lights or red chairs. Rather, with the white tiles and industrial lamps, they have tried to make it look and feel like you are in the back-end shop of a fish monger. As eerie as that may sound, it isn't. Strangely enough, it makes for the perfect place to have some good quality seafood. Then we enjoyed the 'free choice' a-la-carte menu, it was as always just delicious. If you know to appreciate the value of a real chef and attentative service this is your place for great lunch/dinner. Simply one of my favorites and still a quite well kept secret - with real service, something different compared to most other places in Den Haag/Scheveningen. Looking forward to our next visit. I think this is incredibly rare as typically you need to book a reservation weeks in advance - usually they cannot accommodate walk ins. A cool little fact about Mattie's is they buy all their groceries from local establishments. They get the fish from the fish market down the street, the bread from the bakery down the street and their cheese from the cheese store in the main square. And all their ingredients are incredibly fresh! The bread - they get it half baked from the local bakery, so when you order it, it is hot and fresh out of the oven. There is a charge for the bread, but it's totally worth it if you like delicious fresh bread! They also make a two different house spreads (butter with something), I forget exactly what they were, but both were delicious. I ordered off the prix fixe menu while my husband ordered off the regular menu. Since Delft is known for how incredibly fresh their fish and seafood is, we got several seafood dishes. Prawns Aioli €9.90 - amazing! Perfectly cooked, great flavors, very fresh and delicious. Crab appetizer - very generous portion of crab, has some kind of sauce as well. A cold dish, but very flavorful and LOTs of tender, fresh crab. Fresh Dover Sole €36.95 - apparently this is a relatively rare type of fish, the restaurant gets it fresh from the market daily, if they do not sell the fish, they return to market as they only use the freshest fish. You get an entire white fish (pretty meaty), as well as a few sides. The flavor and preparation of this was absolutely perfect! It's a little on the pricier side, but we did not regret trying it! They gave in between course palate cleansers which were incredibly delicious! Dessert is a MUST try, their apple pie is very unique and unlike any apple pie I've ever had before. I don't typically like or eat apple pie, but this one was so good. We also got the Dutch cookies - amazing texture of Bitter cookies, presentation was beautiful and everything on the plate tasted delicious! Overall, my husband and I LOVED Matties, the service was great! The food was superb! We were not disappointed by any dish we received. Would definitely come back here again and recommend this place to others!
