I just wanted to write this review so others who love their cats as much as I loved mine would have a great experience with a trusted vet for their fur baby. I called them this morning with confusion on what to do for my cat. I had others vets telling me he had anxiety, and I also had an animal hospital suggest he was in a thyroid storm. This vet got me in immediately, took my concerns seriously, and gave me the answers I needed to make the right decision for him. I received the clarity I had been seeking. The compassion, knowledge, and care this vet has with cats is remarkable! I highly recommend sending your cats to this vet for their annual wellness check, vaccines, etc., every cat deserves a doctor that understands them and knows how to properly care for them! I used this veterinary office years ago for my Maine Coon. Routine visits were always fine, but when he became seriously ill, I called for an urgent appointment and was told they were fully booked and couldn't see him. I had to take him elsewhere, and he was so sick that he had to be put down the next day. That experience alone left a lasting impression, and I did not return for years. Recently, I decided to give them another chance because of the convenience of the location. Unfortunately, I regret that decision. I brought in my two cats, and blood work was recommended for one of them. The blood draw was poorly handled--it took multiple attempts from the neck, which was distressing for my cat. In the end, one of the samples was mishandled and became unusable, resulting in an inconclusive test. Despite this, I was still charged in full (around $700), and no refund or accommodation was offered for the failed test. Between the lack of availability in urgent situations and the poor handling of a basic procedure, I cannot recommend this clinic. I will not be returning. read more

We have been bringing our cats to Purrfurrably Cats for the past 3 years. Our oldest, Prince Harry, had diabetes and then cancer and eventually had to be put to sleep, but he had the best of care in the meantime. William, our youngest at age 14, is just fine and dandy and got a good grade on the last exam. Our old girl, Isis, age 19, has a poor paw and it's caused a lot of concern and attention. She has been treated with so much compassion and care. Both Dr. Marcus and Dr. Cleary have given us very clear attention and everything has been well explained so that we understand what's going on with our kitties. I highly recommend this practice. The office is in a cute older Monterey cottage near Lake El Estero and the only recommendation I would give is to arrive a little early because parking is often at a premium. read more

Both visits went great, the staff and Dr introduced themselves to me and my cat (even though they didn't forget Jorge ) and explained everything that they were doing. During the emergency visit I was visibly upset and worried for my kitty and they were very reassuring and explained the process and pricing and how everything was going to work. This poor little lady being stacked up with items... Then they did the same thing to me... Love the Cat-only specialty, however this is a One-vet-only operation. As a previously stablished client, be prepared to be referred to Blue Pearl Emergency Vet for routine follow-ups or mildly urgent needs when Dr. Marcus is absent, overbooked or out sick. She has no other vet to cover or help out with a her bustling, successful clinic. Purrfurably Cats reception has a callous way of turning clients away due to the stress of minimal Vet staffing. Disappointed. Starting over at another vet clinic isn't always possible nor efficient, and is way too costly in Monterey area, so I feel my cat suffered unnecessarily. Heart- breaking. I've been a client of Purrfurably Cats for 20 years. As a life long cat owner I knew how traumatic a car ride and vet visit could be to cats. To find a cat only vet was the initial draw. Never having to be concerned of what dogs or aggressive energy we'd encounter in the waiting room was one less thing to worry about. I loved that Purrfurably Cats was a converted period old Monterey houses and the staff has always been so kind and compassionate to my cats. Dr. Brake was the vet when I first started going to Purrfurably Cats but after he passed there were various temporary vets for a period which were fine. Some better than others. Then one day a beautiful, bubbly, clearly cat loving and compassionate woman walked in the exam room. It was Dr. Kathleen Marcus. With a friendly smile, fun chat and kind and compassionate bedside manner I was happy to hear she had bought the practice and was was the new permanent vet. I've gone to other vets in the area and I've even taken a cat or two to an appointment at another vet when I couldn't get in which is rare because they are so accommodating and usually won't let me drop my cat off to be squeezed in on busy days. I've come back permanently to preferably cats because that other animal hospitals my cat was just another pet client in a chaotic waiting room put up on a cold stainless steel table one of many seen throughout the day but it Purrfurably Cats when I walked in the door it was comfortable, calm, pleasant, no vet waiting room animal angst or stress. The fact that they always place a towel down on the exam table means so much to me. It's the add a little touches showing they care about the comfort of your cat. One thing I always mention to friends who have cats looking for a vet is that Dr. Marcus is generous with detail, options and is reasonable. What I mean by that is often times in veterinary medicine there is a range of possibilities a range of options and routes to a solution. She always lets you know what that is. For example: If you do nothing it means this if you want to do a middle ground treatment it would be in this, or you can do this and try a few days of that, if you want to spare no expense there are these specialists with these options which would entail this and cost that. I appreciate this range of insight and options because it lets me make the decision based on my level of concern and budget. Also Dr. Marcus is very good at explaining details so you understand what's going on. She's always been very quick to suggest simple adjustments to lifestyle if appropriate and even provides samples of new food, supplements and treats if available. The doctor was great with my sometimes naughty high anxiety cat. She took extra time to make sure both my kitty and I were comfortable and my cat who normally hides after vet visits didn't seem to be negatively effected at all by the trip (other than side effects from shots). Highly recommend. I didn't even really consider the fact that veterinarians need to have a bedside manner as well, but this doctor and her assistant blew any expectations I may have had out of the window. The best place I ever took my kitty! After having him for 8 years, she's the only vet who cared enough to check and saw "he" was a "she" (I know that's partially my fault, but I never went to check out his bits) My baby had terminal renal failure and Dr. Marcus did everything in her power to make his last couple months as easy as possible. She also gave me samples of whatever she could instead of prescribing expensive drugs. When it came time to say goodbye, she did a home visit on her lunch hour to make sure my kitty wasn't scared in the car on the way to her office. I think I must be the only person that isn't very fond of this doctor. I have been to her a few times and it just seems that she doesn't listen. The first time after she took over the practice I called ahead to ask them to make a note to check for worms. I asked because I was sure that as soon as I got there I would forget. We went in had both cats with me, she did an exam, I forgot and then she didn't check. Guess what I called right after I got home and told them what happen and they told me I had to bring them in for yet ANOTHER exam even though it had been only an hour she was going to charge me another $300 for them to get checked out and that wouldn't be for another week. This was 2004 I went back in Oct, 2008, same doctor did the exams, she didn't check for worms I noticed, i hadn't asked this time though. But I was having a flea situation at my house and had to board them as well. Very good boarding but the doctor wanted to see if they needed their teeth cleaned(she said they both did) and it is $1500 per cat to do the cleaning. Ouch. I liked the old man when I first moved here. It was a shame of his death. But I really think I might find someone else. I am not very fond of her. She gets a partial grooming with a dry bath which helps with the dander production and our allergies. I LOVE the fact that this place is strictly for cats. Took my perpetually hostile kitty (ok, she's about 13 & yes, that's her in the pic) to see Dr. Marcus. Though my beloved never actually mellowed out, I was very happy with our experience there. Some nasty tooth-pulling was involved...and the staff managed to do a fine job even with my cat's bad attitude. I took Kim S. advice on being upfront about money being an issue, and they did the best they could to work with me. Overall, this is the first vet I've had a good experience with...and I'm sure once my kitten is over the initial trauma and drugs, she will be a much happier kitty. At least with me. : ) Right now though...I'll continue dealing with the icy stares...and I'm pretty sure she's flipping me off with her paws...and saying nasty things in cat-talk.... read more

The greatest thing about this vet is that they only see cats. You're not going to show up some day and be told 'oh, the cat person isn't here today, but let me take a look' - how reassuring! Everything is set up for cats and there are only cats waiting in the lobby etc -- it makes everything easier. The staff here is super friendly, and I've always had complete confidence in Dr. Marcus. They've treated my 14 year old cat who became diabetic last year and my bratty almost 1 year old cat who is constantly doing stupid things like eating plastic bags or jumping into sinks filled with boiling water. Their prices seem very reasonable in my opinion, but if money is an issue for you, you'll probably want to make that clear and ask throughout your visit because they tend to run under the assumption that you'll be able to afford everything and don't discuss costs until suddenly you have the bill in your hand. I appreciate the fact that they're not pushy or judgmental too. I recently had to take my old cat to a different vet, and one of the first things that vet said was that I needed to get her teeth cleaned. I realize that might be important, but for an old cat with a lot of other health problems it might not be worth it and I think Dr. Marcus understands things like that. My only complaint is that there's only one doctor, and sometimes they get super busy and have trouble squeezing you in if it's only a semi-emergency. If you adopt from a shelter or rescue and call them right away, I am pretty sure they will give you a free health check - at least that was true for my cat from Animal Friends Rescue. I love that this place is specifically for cats and no other animals which means that there aren't those weird smells and noises to scare the cats that you take in. No, it's not the cheapest place around, but it's nice to have confidence in your vet and her personnel, and the costs seem fair, if not low. They have great rapport/bedside manner and display confidence & competence. In the past I had some issues as far as communicating with her staff, but they now seem to be completely on top of things. My eight-year old kitty recently had dental surgery performed by Dr. Marcus, and she was eating within a couple hours of coming home. The staff here is courteous and considerate! My large male cat, appropriately named Captain Chaos, has gotten in several cats fights since our family moved here to Monterey. We have had to rush him to Purrfurably Cats within minutes of closing time and they are always willing to stay open in order to treat him. Cpt. Chaos also needs prescription cat food. My 13 year old son is responsible for feeding, watering, & cleaning out the kitty box. One Friday evening, my son failed to tell me the cats were completely out of food. Purrfurably Cats was already closed for the weekend. We left a message with the vet's office & they called us back Saturday morning to say they left a bag of food hidden in the back for us to pick up and that we could pay for when they opened again the following Monday. SIMPLY THE BEST! Dr. Marcus is THE superhero for kitties and their owners! This review is long overdue, so after bringing many different cats here for ER help, to be put down to sleep due to their old age and cancers, or for regular check-ups, here are my thoughts on this excellent doctor's office for cats! Dr. Kathleen Marcus reminds me of Veterinarian Barbie. I don't know if you have ever seen this Barbie, but she is Dr. Marcus. They must have modeled this Barbie after her! She wears pumps and is extremely glamorous. And then she speaks and reveals Scientist Barbie! What a brilliant mind this woman has! She knows her business! The reason I write this is because every time I see her, I just have to smile: a doctor wearing pumps and looking beautiful and then speaking like a scientist. I feel like she would be a character on Star Trek, a glamorous doctor curing a deadly disease and saving the human race. Well, in reality, she just may save your kitty. At the very least, she certainly will give it the best care possible. As for Dr. Kathleen's passion for her work, this woman autographs her work with excellence. She is so compassionate with the cats! When I had to painfully put two cats down (written above), Dr. Marcus and her staff were so understanding and loving. They gave me time alone to mourn after and to say my goodbyes. Dr. Marcus was so gentle and loving with the cats; their passings were peaceful and painless. The other cats I have brought in are afraid of people, but not Dr. Marcus. I am always stunned at how they cooperate with her without giving her any resistance. Dr. Kathleen Marcus has given me excellent advice with the cats' care. One of my cats needed a cyst removed, which Dr. Marcus did successfully and without any discomfort that I could recognize. It healed quickly and this kitty was walking around happily in no time! Recently I brought in a sick cat. Blood work was done there at the office and with a very little wait, results were available! Dr. Marcus went over the details of the lab results and we discussed the next steps to take. She listens to your concerns, takes the time needed to answer questions and address your concerns. She truly is an excellent vet who loves cats. Years ago, a friend referred me to Dr. Marcus. My friend takes her cat to Purrfurably Cats whenever she goes on vacation. She doesn't trust anyone with her cat except Dr. Marcus and her team. Her cat is always well taken care of! The cost of cat care seems to me to be expensive, but I do not know if all veterinarians are expensive now. I like the love, expertise, and care so much with Dr. Marcus, I have not looked around at other vets to compare prices. What I mean is an exam is a little over $60 and blood work panels (the basic panels) are over $170.00. If you have multiple cats, ouch on the pocketbook! But then again, like children, if one cannot afford taking care of it and giving it the best and healthiest life possible, don't have one. And for goodness sake, don't have many! Cats need check-ups, flea meds, nail clippings, etc. It is expensive but necessary. Even if I did find an office that was less expensive, I'm not sure they will truly love the cats as much as Dr. Marcus does, have that gentle touch and care, and have the brilliant knowledge she does! And her staff loves cats too, and are so kind and compassionate. So, if this office is more expensive, well, she specializes in JUST cats, which is awesome, AND she's worth all the love and knowledge and brilliance she brings to this profession. I do suggest before you get extra work or tests, make sure you have an estimate so you are not surprised when it comes time to pay. They usually offer this. The have worked with me in the past when the urgent cost was more than my budget. I appreciated it so much. On my last two visits, I was offered free food samples for the cats, which is always great when they have them available. And they offer flea medication at a reasonable price as well as great products for your cats. All in all- THIS IS A GREAT PLACE TO TAKE YOUR CAT! Dr. Marcus is WONDERFUL and so is her staff. This is easily the best vet I've been to. The staff is very friendly, very helpful, and very understanding. Dr Kat Marcus is a great vet and I really trust her. I've been to other vets before, but she's my favorite. The staff as a whole is also by far the best in the area. The facilities are also nice. I haven't boarded my cat here, but I'm sure I will if I go out of town. I like that not only are they a vet that offers shots, check-ups, and surgeries, but you can also buy cat food here, get your cat groomed here, and also board them for both short-term and long-term. I mean you seriously can't ask for more from a place. Purrfurably Cats does everything. The only downside I have is that it's expensive. But I guess you pay more for better quality. And all vets are expensive anyway. Overall, you can't go wrong with this place. read more

I took my cat to Purrfurably cats because of an itching situation. I was talked into over $500 in tests and charges. All tests came back clear. My cat was put on an RX anti flea med. (That was why she was itching). When it was time to get another RX, I found the Purrfurably cats sold the product about 40% more then it was available online. (Im still paying of the $500+ credit card bills from my visit). So I called them and asked for a copy of my cat's RX (Prescription) and was told I'd have to pick it up at their location. I explained that I was disabled, and it would cost me $50 thru Uber to get there and back. So they finally agreed to mail it to me. I've contacted them 4 times. Every time I'm told it's been mailed. I've never once received anything from them. After 8 weeks of trying. Then they told me they'd email a copy to me. So I forward that to the company I want to buy it from, and the company calls Purrfurably cats to confirm it's a real RX, staff at Purrfurably cats REFUSES TO CONFIRM IF IT'S REAL OR NOT. They won't mail you a copy of the RX. And they won't confirm the RX they themselves have emailed. So if you don't get the product from them at inflated prices, you can't get it. PURRFURABLY CATS IS A RIPOFF ARTIST! read more
