This store was one of our absolute favorites! The hats are amazing and I although I normally only wear baseball caps from time to time, this store made me desperately want to buy a bunch of summer hats! The jewelry is unbelievable and I could have stayed all day going through the vast selection. I couldn't afford any of the jewelry but it was wonderful to look at and wish for. My friend found the hat she wanted and we were completely satisfied, not to mention that the owner is such a cute and friendly woman. She makes the experience at the store even more special! I cannot say enough about this shop. After reading the negative google reviews, I was blown away. I have been a repeat customer in this store for over 20 years now and through a change of ownership. I have never once had anything but a positive experience. The current owner is always willing to help, responsive, reasonable and professional. Yes the hats are expensive but it is a high end hat store and the hats are made by craftsman from around the world. If you want a mass produced hat that everyone has then I suggest Macy's or Target. To miss a visit to this store due to the google reviews would be a shame for the fashion lover looking for a quality piece. I also do not understand people not calling the owner to voice their complaints or concerns before becoming a keyboard warrior and falsely accusing an establishment abs trying to harm someone's livelihood based on one experience. read more

Was in Portsmouth one weekend in the winter and popped in because I had been looking for a stylish, sophisticated hat for the winter temps in New England. Tried on many hats with their assistance but since they are a little pricey, I asked them to hold it for me for the rest of the day so I could think about it. As we shopped and dined around town, I kept thinking about how cute the hat was and how I hadn't seen anything like it in CT where I shop locally. Went back before they closed and purchased the hat and haven't looked back :). With the quality of this hat (wool made in Canada) this hat should last me years - I have no regrets. I googled the brand and their prices are competitive so don't think you'll do better elsewhere - you won't ! check in on my recent trip, got baby a pink fedora-like sun hat for summer- they were able to ship it to me in NM so I didn't have to deal with carry-on. The hats are good quality hats, the kind that you have for years. I saw a few more hats i would have loved to have but have to pace myself, they run $100 each so this could become an expensive habit. Bought my first derby hat here and was surprised at the quality, given that I had been searching for the perfect hat for ages and not found anything remotely close in beauty or style. Was a little discouraged that so many of the hats I was interested in were "out of season", but with such a small space to work with, and so much inventory, it would only be expected that seasonal wear would have to be rotated. If I could give negative stars I would. This was one of the rudest businesses I have ever visited. My family and I were on vacation at the beach and decided to visit Portsmouth for the night. We walked by "Puttin' on the Glitz" and noticed all of the hats. You see my mom is battling breast cancer and has lost all of her hair from the chemo treatments. She has bought several hats during this time and we thought we may be able to find some in this store to add to her collection, maybe a fun beach hat! As we entered the store there was one saleswoman on the phone behind the counter...she never greeted us, asked us if we needed assistance, or even looked up at us, she clearly was on a very important personal phone call. Keep in mind my mom is completely bald with nothing hiding her head, I would call that your target market customer in a hat store! We began trying on the hats and were having some fun with it. We were modeling them on for my mom and I asked my fiancé in the store to take a picture of all of us in the hats, when all of a sudden, the rude saleswoman finally decides to acknowledge us by saying, "Excuse me, you are not allowed to take any picture of the hats" then goes back to her very important phone call. We all looked at a each in complete shock of how rude she was and immediately left the store. Had this woman taken one minute to even look up at my mom, she may have noticed her bald head and that she may actually be there to shop for a hat. This store not only lost our business, but our future business, and hopefully the business of anyone reading this review. Way to go "Puttin' on the Glitz"...you officially took the fun out of cancer patients shopping for hats. read more

One of my favorite stores on the Seacoast! Everything about it is special and it actually feels magical at night if you go to one of their special events! I won a gorgeous necklace as a door prize and there was free flowing wine and a nice selection of snacks. There is something for every price point and when I just go to browse, I have always felt really comfortable and welcome. This is a great spot for any accessory. The store is small, but filled with beautiful things of every design. What first attracted me to the inventory were all of the vintage and vintage looking pieces, made with several colorful stones and metals. Then I began to appreciate the more modern, hammered metal pieces. Since the store opened (perhaps 3 or so years ago ?), I have purchased several pairs of earrings, necklaces, and one vintage handbag from this store. I do often get unsolicited compliments on these items, which is very flattering, and I am thrilled to support a local, independent business. Assiah, the owner, has always been helpful with choosing something special, has a vast knowledge of the designers and stones, and was flexible with my one return when a gift I received did not work out. Presently, State Street is a bit dug up, but this is one of the many spots on the block certainly worth the trip. read more
