Merkava is a beautiful little restaurant in La Condesa with both indoor and outdoor seating. As mentioned, we were tired from traveling and picked the cool, indoor seating and enjoyed the nice decor. We started with hummus and, not realizing it came with pita, also ordered the house bread. The hummus was a huge portion, enough to feed a group of 7-8 and came with a pouch of several warm pitas. The hummus was homemade and a bit chunky. The house bread was even better, coils of bread with tahini butter, serrano chili oil, and a tomato cumin sauce. The bread was fantastic, warm from being freshly baked and with buttery layers and the variety of dipping sauces was pleasant for dipping. A show-stopper of a dish was the whole roasted cauliflower served with zaatar, yogurt, and mint. Our head was cut into manageable portions for us, but interestingly, they served the adjacent table with a whole head for a more dramatic presentation. The cauliflower was tender and its mild flavor was enhanced by the zaatar spices. The fish of the day was the better of the two entrees. We liked the sauteed vegetables with lentils that it was served with, much like a ratatouille with lentils, along with a parsley sauce and grilled lemon. The wagyu kebabs were an odd texture, crumbled and dry. The restaurant provided a complimentary bite of dessert, a fruit (date, apricot) baklava of sorts that was a sweet bite to end the meal. The beer was refreshing and the chips that they offer you while you wait for your food is a nice touch. As for the food, it was salty and it was overall OK. After scrolling thru the review photos I thought for sure I would land on a burger. But I was pleasantly surprised to see they had hot dogs on the menu, which were cleverly disguised as Perras Maltesas. And being that I am not a vegetarian, I ordered the carnivore selection. Boy, was I glad I found the hot dog on that menu. It is presented in "pig in a blanket" style with two 1/4 pound beefy dogs in homemade roll with 2 kinds of gooey cheese and caramelized onions. And even though I am normally a chili dog kinda girl, I have to say every bite of this tasty combo tasted like a bite from home. And these guys aren't kidding around. The dog runs end to end and it's a hearty meal for one or perfect snack for two. The picture shows the dog after I cut it in half for sharing. The dog is grilled and the bun is toasty warm lending to yummy, gooey, cheesy melt. If you are jonseing for a good hot dog in Mexico City, this is your destination.

I had enjoyed the "Fabada," which is a pork and beans style dish from the province of Austurias in Spain, and my husband had a heavy meat stew called "Gallegos a la Galeciana" which is from the province of Gallecia in Spain.
