Quail Run Ranch is a unique and one-of-a-kind ostrich farm that is basically out in the middle of nowhere. You might not realize how huge and dangerous some of these birds really are, but they average about 9 feet to 12 feet tall and from 250 to 350 pounds. And, they can be quite deadly. During the mating season, the males will instantly try to attack you if you get close. They've got about 6 to 10 different ostriches in separate fenced off areas. If you pay a few dollars for a tour, they will walk you down and show you the different ostriches they have, as well as provide some pretty interesting ostrich facts. Their feet are crazy as they are the only two toed bird on earth. Looking at them it is easy to see how they are related to dinosaurs because it looks just like a dinosaur foot. You can also buy ostrich eggs if they have them available, which are equal to about 24 to 36 eggs. The flavor and consistency is actually pretty good as well and very similar to chicken eggs. They also sell honey and a bunch of other things. Also, in certain times of year, you can go and see the baby ostrich chicks that they raise. If you're feeling adventurous, this is definitely worth a trip, especially if you have kids. This has become a fun stop we started making on our annual visit to the California Poppy Preserve in Antelope Valley. I would call ahead and see what's going on with tours and everything else. I recently had the most incredible experience visiting an ostrich farm and I can't stop raving about it! From the moment we arrived, the staff was welcoming and friendly, making us feel right at home. Our tour guide was not only extremely kind, but also incredibly knowledgeable about the ostriches and their habitat. I dont know where to start... with Jessica being friendly on the phone or with her mom Jackie being so nice and funny with welcoming us. Jackie started off greeting us warmly and saying we can take our masks off if we are comfortable or keep it on but there was so much space it was your choice. She educates on ostriches and lets you feed them. There are goats there too. Its not a big place but its a cool little stop. There is a playground right there for kids to also enjoy. We only stayed a little over an hour here, but it was time well-spent. We called to make an appointment in advance, and the co-owner recommended coming earlier in the day rather than later because of the heat. I'm really glad we did because we arrived at 9:00 a.m. and left around 10:15 a.m., right when temperatures were starting to reach about 95 degrees. When we arrived, there was a family who had just finished wrangling up two baby ostriches to take home (I didn't know this was a "thing," but during our tour, our co-owner guide (pictured) mentions that he sells quite a few each year). We started out viewing a hollowed out ostrich egg, which my son promptly broke. We were given another, which he broke again, so we moved on. The owner was very understanding, for which I was very appreciative. We were taken back to the ostriches' pens, where the owner described how dangerous these birds were. They can outrun a grown man, and kill him, too. Their legs have a talon or hook, and when they feel threatened, they can kick backwards and pull up, essentially disemboweling their victim. Sounds like a gruesome death. They are very aggressive, so we had to be careful. We were advised not to feed them, but the co-owner, who also holds a degree in Zoology, stuck his finger out, and let the ostrich peck it so we could see how they eat. He mentioned that ostrich and emu meat is some of the healthiest red meat around, with emu meat being 97% fat-free and ostrich meat being 98% fat-free. It is quite expensive, too. We learned so much, and as a bonus, the co-owner and guide gave us some tips for some other family-owned animal-themed locations, like the wolf sanctuary, and the exotic cat rescue, that are family- and budget-friendly. read more

We took a family excursion to check out The Quail Run Ostrich Ranch and am so glad we did!!! We pulled into the Ranch (which has plenty of parking) and were immediately greeted by Jacquie, the owner. Jacquie is SUPER friendly and is quick to make you feel at home. She also is an incredibly talented artist with her ostrich egg art! They're truly remarkable. The tour started with being able to see and hold a fresh ostrich egg! It was very cool! They sell them for $40. Then we went over to one of the paddocks where we were greeted by three ostriches. I've been to Ostrichland USA before so I've had the experience of being up close with ostriches. But these three were WAY more docile than the ones at ostrichland! It was very cool being so close and having them just chill out while Jacquie told us about them. They have quite a few ostriches on the property (I think she said 26 or something like that) along with chickens and some goats. I had a great time and will absolutely be coming back here in July when they have babies!!! The reason for 4 stars as opposed to 5 (5 being "as good as it gets") is that I wish there was a hint more to the tour. It was pretty much just the one paddock and we were done. Don't get me wrong, they invited you to stay as long as you wanted, but a few extra stops on the tour would have been cool. Full disclosure, unlike Ostrichland USA, where they are open as a tourist attraction, Quail Run is a working ostrich farm and they decided to start allowing guests to share these amazing birds with people. So it's a bit of a different thing. But again... 4 stars (Yay, I'm a fan!!!) is pretty darn good! I would absolutely recommend visiting!!! It's only $5/person with free parking and available restrooms. I'm excited to go back!!! Ps. You won't get reception here so plan accordingly when going home or to your next stop. We guessed wrong. I think his name was Josh? I wish I took a note of his name because he was such a great tour guide. Friendly and had extensive knowledge on his birds. He really has a passion for his Ostriches. He knew each and every one of his birds by name, he could tell you their personalities, and what they were thinking. He could tell you about the Ostriches and their habits. There's just so much he knew and he was so passionate about it. He loves and takes care of these creatures. We were very impressed and it was a good time. We got to pet an ostrich and we let them bite at our fingers. It doesn't hurt. Their bite power is very weak, it felt like a little scratch. For $5 it was a tour well worth the money. It comes with a drink too. He provides you with water or Starbucks. He's got big hands too, I shook it and my hands could barely wrap around his. Excellent customer service. So happen to stumble across this ranch on our way to go cherry picking . Right when we got there there was a gentleman that gave us a tour full of information about the animals and answered a of the kids questions . Gave us a little bit of history about the place and even himself . They aren't out to make money they simply love the birds and it shows . THAT'S JUST FOWL!! Have you ever wanted to get up close and personal with an ostrich? Well, me and The Crew did, so we came here. For a measly $5.00 per person, we had a tour guide for our visit to the ranch, which included food to feed the big birds. Sitting under shade trees, at picnic tables on a cool Saturday morning, we got edumacated on all things ostrich, including ostrich history, mannerisms, health benefits from their oils, how the ranch got started, just to name a few topics. Once our brains were overloaded with the plethora of information, we roamed the ranch, observing their behavior and, of course, snapping lots of pictures. Ostriches are such odd characters. They are known to be... not very smart at all, and they do the silliest things. Their long neck, head the size of a fist, they have two toes on each foot, and their eyes are about the size of billiard balls. They have a gift shop with all things related to ostriches, including eggs for sale. You may want to bring a cooler if you want to purchase an ostrich egg or some farm fresh chicken eggs. One ostrich egg is the equivalent to approximately three dozen chicken eggs, contain less fat and cholesterol than chicken eggs, and can be frozen. IN AN EGGSHELL: Me and The Crew enjoyed our time at the ranch, gaining knowledge, holding an actual ostrich egg, they're so big!!! Running with the ostriches, pretending to try and fly, feeding them and observing them in their natural-ish state. A family owns and runs the ranch. Their policy is that an Ostrich that receives a name is a pet, therefore, they do not kill and eat them. All funds received are used to maintain the birds at the ranch. The tour includes several paddocks with mated named pairs of ostriches, such as Korea and Sweet Sam, Elvis and Drucilla, and so on. A tour highlight was their new "grow paddock" which now contains 14 babies of various ages that are growing fast! It's best to make reservations prior to visiting. It's a loooong drive from anywhere in the middle of nowhere, only to be asked to come back another day. FACTOIDS: - Ostriches can live to be 40 yrs old in the wild and 75 years in captivity. - Ostriches are the only bird in the world with only 2 toes. - The skin on their legs and feet are so tough that they are not vulnerable to snakes in their native Africa. read more

We arrived mid-day on a Saturday, easy to find and easy parking and Josh warmly greeted us and gave us a super informational tour (private tour since we were the only ones there). He's a 7th generation rancher, very charismatic and very knowledgeable about ostriches. He was very patient and encouraging with all our questions. We were given the option to feed by hand at our own risk, which we did, and we got lots of great pictures in the process. SUPER worth your time and $5 to learn about these amazing creatures. Definitely recommend you make a day out of it if you're visiting from LA like we were -- there's tons of cool stuff to do around this Antelope Valley area. In spring there's the poppies of course. There's also u-pick fruit options in the area, e.g. in summer there's cherry picking, in fall there's peach picking, etc. I've met alpacas at sweet water alpaca farm in agua dulce. Vasquez rocks are in agua dulce as well. There's a few wineries in the area including agua dulce winery. Tip: In some areas reception isn't great (at least for Verizon) so recommend you download offline maps for this area on google maps before going. read more

Dangerous, lazy, and disrespectful. My mom and I wanted to do something fun and SAFE to get out of the house and be happy during this ongoing global pandemic. The woman who met us for the "tour" blatantly REFUSED to wear a mask, argued with us about it, and mocked us for wearing our masks. We told her that we know people who have died from Covid and to please put on a mask, and she told us that she knows people who were "killed by the vaccine"... an uneducated anti masker and anti vaxxer who even refused to wear a mask temporarily for her paying customers safety, and continuously disrespected us, scoffing and rolling her eyes at us trying to keep six feet from her. We ended up staying a total of ten minutes because of her disrespect to us and her complete disregard of our safety, and she still charged us full price, and then tried to pawn an egg off to us for $50... She even cornered us in this caged off corner and was like "if you don't mind me getting close, I'll show you something" and we said "we do mind, please keep your distance" and she scoffed and rolled her eyes again and came right at us anyway, ignoring our request for her distance and smashed herself into the corner with us while we jumped over a bench to get away from her before having had enough and leaving, oh and I got a splinter. Completely unprofessional and disrespectful. The ten minutes of the "tour" we endured, she spent starring at her phone anyway. The whole thing was offensive. She was so rude and never even smiled once. We drove an hour and a half to get there, just to be made unsafe and disrespected to turn around and drive right back home. Don't waste your time. Don't waste your money. Don't support businesses that scoff at your safety and measure instated by the CDC during a global pandemic that has killed over 500,000 people. I'm appalled. So much fun! We got to feed the birds and see them running around. I'm glad they weren't in cages. They seem well taken care of.

So I was leaving the California State Poppy preserve with a friend, when a small sign on the side of the road caught my eye. "Ostrich Farm!" it proclaimed in bright colors. I thought to myself. Ostrich farm? Here? In Santa Clarita? What? I pulled over to the side of the road to further investigate. Yelp Ap! Where is there an ostrich farm in Santa Clarita? Wait...what? Only 8 miles from my current location? Morgan Freeman! Take me to this place! I then legally turned the car around to get me there. (Morgan Freeman is the voice on the GPS, he's not in my car with me.) Just a little bit later, I was driving along the tiny windy roads of Lake Hughes. Small hand-made signs along the roadside told me I was heading in the right direction. Eventually, a slightly larger sign pointed me towards a long driveway into the place. When we pulled in there was a little old lady waving at us to greet us. They've got a doorbell thingy hooked up to their driveway. Whenever a car pulls into their driveway, it buzzes loudly, and they come out to greet the person. Little old lady introduced herself, welcomed us and asked us if we'd like a tour. Just $5 gets you an informative, educational and up close view of some impressive birds. Little old lady took us up to the side of one of the pens when little old man joined us. Little old lady and little old man shared as much information as they had to share. They called to the birds by their names, and when they came running, they then pet the birds lovingly and told us all the anecdotes and stories of the local wildlife investigating the ostriches. Even one about a curious coyote who managed to find his way into the pen, but then got kicked back out of the pen by the ostriches. Don't mess with a flock of ostriches. The tour ends with an opportunity to feed the birds. They've got bowls glued to pipes that you can safely extend into the pen, and give you something solid to hang onto when the ostriches begin to peck madly at to get the food inside. She will also refill your bowl if you didn't get enough of the feeding experience. Little old lady was super nice. They've also got more regular sized birds. They sell both chicken and ostrich eggs as an extra bit of income. Chicken eggs for for a few dollars, and Ostrich eggs go for $45 a piece. But one of those big eggs is about the same as two or three dozen little chicken eggs. Little old lady also had an ostrich egg decorating hobby, which she proudly displayed for sale in her tiny little gift shop. As we wandered back towards the car, little old man had diverted off to give an impromptu lecture to the next tour group. Complete with examples, flash cards and maps to further educate about the giant birds. One of the things he explained to us was he wanted to answer any and every question anybody had about Ostriches. Which is a heartwarming and brilliant attitude to have with people. Prior to this day, I had absolutely zero clue that these people and their amazing birds were out here. Now I'm going to make an attempt to get out that way whenever I can. Great job. Great place. Thanks so much for your hospitality. read more

Awesome if your kids are dinosaur buffs or curious about animals this is an authentic real ranch. This isn't a typical tour its a talk with the owner and his wife and their amazing ostriches. As a preschool teacher I know this is the best way to learn. Feeding and watching up close and personal these biggest birds in the world. Did you know they are from the dinosaur era and look prehistoric! Their kick can disembowel a lion! Their nests hold up to 100 eggs which are huge and heavy and hold the same as three dozen chicken eggs. It doesn't get better than this. Beautiful ranch here with happy curious ostriches and friendly hospitable owners. The ostriches are well taken care of and lay beautiful eggs. One of the owners, Luke took us around for a little tour ($5 a person) and we got to interact with the ostriches from the fence. I didn't think I'll ever say this ever but I must say ostriches are so cute!!! They really do sway their wings up and down and have big eyes and long lashes like in cartoons, hahaha. Also, we got to witness an ostrich lay an egg and it was massive. They quickly retrieved it and we got to hold it right away. It was still warm, and was for sale, but I bought some honey instead. Their alfalfa honey is now my favorite. One thing I should add is that you can rent out a tent and a BBQ grill on that property there and stay for the night! I am seriously thinking about doing this soon. They also have swings for kids and a beautiful garden. read more

Like another reviewer, I spotted signs on a random day out driving around and stopped by. I arranged a tour today and I was so impressed! The family who owns the place is welcoming and vastly knowledgable about the ostriches - you can tell their passion for these amazing creatures by how thorough they are in explaining every fact about the birds even though they've probably given the spiel a million times. The animals are well cared for and charming. There is a quaint gift shop with handmade ostrich egg art and actual ostrich eggs available for purchase. A really fun outing rather close to Palmdale / Lancaster. My son's class took a field trip to another ostrich place in Tehachapi and the tour guide was impersonal and detached and the location was way too far. we have two curious young girls (2 and 4) and like to go on random local adventures on the weekends. our girls really like animals and i like farms so when we stumbled upon quail run ostrich farm and realized it was around a 90-minute drive from our house, we jumped at the chance to check it out! we swung by on a saturday morning (i emailed beforehand to make an appointment but it looks like you can just pop by) and we had a private tour (lasted around 30 minutes) that included a mini-class about ostriches, walked around and fed 'em, and explored the area, which includes a few chickens and goats. i love that it's a family-owned and operated. it is a very down-to-earth operation so while there are clean bathrooms and super cute souvenirs like decorated ostrich eggs and even a green screen area where it can look like you're riding one of the ostriches or being hatched and things, there isn't a lot else... at least right now. they do have big plans and are in the process of rebuilding after the big fires 2 years ago but definitely worth it as a fun little family adventure for the kids. best part - it's only $5 for the tour for adults (4 years old or older), $2 for feeding only (but get the tour - so worth it to learn more about ostriches). we stayed around 60 minutes but the kids were sick and it was getting close to nap time otherwise i'd totally recommend making the day out of the trek to visit a few other spots. i think there's an alpaca farm and a pig ranch close by and there's always lake hughes and castaic too. a few tips: it is about a 30-minute windy drive from the 5 freeway with weak cell reception and no gas stations. we did spot a coffee shop or 2 close by, there are fast food spots next to the freeway, and they do sell drinks for $1 each but bring munchies and things, especially if you have a family full of snackers like i do. read more

I visited Lebec for the snow up the mountain but then my family and I were looking for something else to do so we started googling fun things to do and found this Quail ranch place and omg were we so happy we found it! It is a family run Quail Ranch and let me tell you the people are one of the friendliest people i've ever met in my life! The woman who owns the ranch was giving us a little tour and some fun facts about quails that we didn't know about! She also has a honey bee farm and makes honey and we purchased some and it was delicious! They also rent out Giant TeePees and spaces for wedding, birthdays etc. Would definitely recommend this place it's cute and worth the trip! They are located up the mountain. read more

This place is a hidden gem, had a fun time up there with the family. The owner, wife, and presumed son have an amazing knowledge of these giant birds. I learned a couple of facts to share. First the Ostrich is capable of a burst speed of up to 60 mph (almost cheetah speed). Second fact, the Ostrich can sustain a running pace of 40 mph for over 40 miles (Wow, amazing endurance). Great time, owners are exceptionally welcoming and have wealth of knowledge they love to share. Extremely kid friendly, our 16-month old had so much fun, will be bringing her back soon. read more

Driving between San Diego/Orange County and San Francisco - Check Car with kids bored out of their minds - Check Sore butt from sitting so long - Check Need a break from the mundane scenery of I-5 - Check What a great break during the drive down or up between Norcal and Socal! It's also a nice educational break for the kids. Came here a couple of months ago and saw the baby Ostriches and the big full size adults that were much more intimidating in person. The farm does a great job with kids and are so patient answering questions that I'm sure they've heard a million times. The owner is a trained zoologist and is so knowledgeable about the animals (as he should be!). Even if you didn't have kids this would be a great stop. You can even buy a fresh ostrich egg here to take home and all sorts of other ostrich related products are available. Highly recommended! read more
