There is plenty of parking, a small playground, 12 picnic tables on the park side (there might be a couple more on the boat launch side, I don't recall), a restroom facility and the boat launch. The boat launch is on the opposite side of the road from the park. There is a fair amount of open grassy space to let the kids run around or play frisbee, etc. We didn't see any BBQ grills but they do have a hot coals disposal area if you want to bring your own portable grill. There were several people fishing along the river when we stopped by and saw one family playing in a small sandy area along the river. The river current is quite swift in the section by the park because of some curves in the river, so I wouldn't advise allowing small children to wade in the water here as they could easily be swept away, and because of this I'm not sure if swimming is even allowed (I didn't see mention of it on their website, but don't recall what the local signage said).

My husband took Basic 1 and Basic 2 a few years ago and raved about the experience. He returned to take Basic 1 again with our friend Val and myself. We met another wonderful mate and new friend that rounded out our group of four. Sunny early summer evenings learning the basics on the Columbia left us all pumped for more. And Portland Sailing Center has a lot to offer. The book used in class, A Forest of Sails, is a beautifully produced resource. It contains the same humor and valuable voice of experience. The reading and homework is valuable and directly relevant to the class. While there is a book, this is a hands-on course. Throughout the six classes, three different boats were used. This varied exposure provided a rich foundation to build basic skills. Questions are welcomed, and always answered fully. This student entered the class pensive (maybe a little scared... ok, terrified), but halfway through the course when at the tiller and catching a little gust, something inside my chest just bloomed with the feel of the boat heeling over and gaining speed. It's a feeling that demands to be pursued! I highly recommend Portland Sailing Center and its staff for those who have an interest in sailing.

We went for an evening walk along the shore of Lacamas Lake, brought our Banh mi sandwiches too. There's a boat launch there, so you'll see kayaks, paddleboards, and the occasional motorboat slicing across the water. The shade of old trees gives you relief when the sun is out, and the grassy areas make for a great spot to lay out a blanket, people-watch, or just daydream. I also appreciated the little park facilities, restrooms, picnic tables, and even a playground if you bring little ones.
