We bellied up to the bar just as the first part of the drag festivities were started, which included a pageant. Once the crown was awarded, the show officially began. While we were not in the main area with the stage, they were broadcasting the stage on multiple screens throughout the bar, so we had a front row seat from afar. Drinks are strong and well priced. Two drinks for us ran $14, which is what we paid for one drink at the spot we just had dinner. Like most gay bars, the drinks are fancy or the highest of quality, but they are strong, well poured, priced well and served by friendly and fun bartenders! There appears to be an upstairs, but we stayed downstairs, but the staircase was busy with folks going up and down. Also, important to note this is a cash only bar. They have an ATM immediately upon entry, but FYI to grab cash before you show if you want to avoid ATM fees. This warm welcome heightened our excitement for the upcoming performance. The theater is relatively small, with only 250 seats, so I believe all of them offer a good view of the stage. We were seated in the VIP section, which provides table service for drinks. However, unless you are seated right at the front, I don't think it's worth it (the tables behind us were slightly elevated and, despite being more affordable, had a better view of the stage). The cocktails tasted good, but I didn't find them very strong. I had a couple, and to my surprise, I felt absolutely no buzz. This is unusual for me as I am quite a lightweight when it comes to drinking. The performance is immersive, led by the Master of Ceremonies, EnVee, who skillfully brings all the various acts together. Her strong personality and charisma are integral to the show, and she also possesses an amazing voice. The acrobatics were nothing short of spectacular, and while the performance was undeniably sexy, it maintained a level of class that allowed us to be captivated by the performers' impressive skills. The theater in which I saw Grey Gardens the Musical offers spacious, comfortable seating in an extremely intimate environment. It's a modern theater, sure, but I was able to stretch my legs out, cross them even, and shift in my seat (OK, I'm restless when sitting for more than an hour), while enjoying the show. I believe there isn't a bad seat in the house. Grey Gardens blew me away. The sound was absolutely stellar and the performances were perfection. Everyone agreed that Drew and Jessica were on point with their GG performances. The actresses last night were just as good. I am not exaggerating. Blew. Me. Away. As Big Edie would say, "You CAN have your cake and eat it, too, in this life." Thank you, Unicorn for existing and making a quality theater experience a sure thing in Kansas City.

I cut my teeth on the most superb drag shows and cabaret for the past 20 years. It's part of coming of age in the big city, right? I also worked for two years at NYC's Lucky Chengs, "Drag Queen Capital of the World." I know good drag when I see it! (And so does my mom. Guess who's addicted to Ru Paul's Drag Race?) Cirque du Gay's cabaret (I made a rhyme!) is made up of two guys...*only* two guys. I say this because until curtain call, I thought it was a cast of many (true, I have poor vision but that's besides the point). These performers certainly pulled the taffeta over *my* eyes. Most of the acts are that kind of bizarre-funny that either goes over heads or makes you laugh uncontrollably (guess what camp I fell into?) For example, they had this really floppy/foppy puppet that randomly peeked out over the backdrop throughout the show. Are you laughing now? Why not? See? In all seriousness, the numbers combine music, dance, lip synching, mime and comedy. The costumes were as garish and sometimes comical, as they were gorge and creative The performers are at the top of their game. I hope to catch one of their upcoming shows around town, soon. They deserve to be raking in the dough and live the life of full time performers, though ticket prices are ridiculously cheap. Bring yer momma! If she's like mine, she'll love it. Kansas City has a lot of annual arts events and festivals that are phenomenal; but Fringe Fest is…read morethe standout in my playbill. After a 2 year Covid break, the 2 week festival returned to Kansas City and runs until 7/31/22. Over 55 different productions are being presented across 15 venues over 2 weeks, which equates to almost 300 separate performances! There is also a visual arts display and film. The festival is in it's 18th year, but this is only my 3rd year to attend and as long as it returns so will I. You must purchase a $5 button and then with the button, you are allowed to purchase event tickets for $10 per show. The performances range from dance, stand-up, story telling, drama, music... from family entertainment to risque' adult themed cabaret. I have attended 3 events this past weekend and have seen an intense drama with adult language and violence, a one man comedy dealing with mental health issues and relationships and another one man presentation based on the biblical book of Ecclesiastes. I have never had a bad experience in the 3 years and 10+ shows I attended. I'm eager to finish out this weekend with at least 2 more shows. For only $10 I'm able to support local and traveling artists, attend an event at one of KC's top venues and walk away with a something to ponder. Open Your Mind and Support Local Art!

Marilyn Maye is "the greatest white female singer in the world" according to Ella Fitzgerald! Now,…read morethat's saying something. I've had the pleasure to see her twice this year, once with the Heartland Men's Chorus and the other night at Jardine's. She is a cabaret singer, a jazz singer and a legend. She is simply amazing. At 83 years old, she is full of piss and vinegar and makes no apologies. She is smart, beautiful and has a voice stronger and more impactful than any others around. Her voice took me on an emotional journey. There were times that the tone of her voice and the way she sang a note made my heart wrench and my eyes fill with tears while other times laughing my ass off......all from her voice. Truly an amazing story teller through the songs and in between the songs. She has traveled the world, sang at Carnegie Hall and holds the honor of appearing the most times on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson at a total of 76 times. I believe her permanent home is here in Kansas City, but I have a feeling she in on the road often. She performs at Jardine's a couple weeks of the year so keep your eye out and be sure to catch her if you can. She is not slowing down and as a matter of fact, might actually be picking up some speed.
