An an old theater that has been renovated as an event space and concert venue with an 800 person capacity. Their is generally no seating on the floor when there are concerts yet they have a few reserved tables and chairs in the wrap around balcony. I have done both and certainly appreciate a chair when attending a three hour event. The bar is priced moderately and much cheaper than some venues, my bourbon and soda was $8. Street parking on Main Street is now off limits because of the streetcar, lots are small and limited and side streets are dark and sketchy, so catch an Uber or take the streetcar. read more

I can't say enough great things about the incredible team at the Madrid Theatre. We attended a concert last week with my mother, who uses a wheelchair, and the entire staff went above and beyond to ensure she felt welcomed, comfortable, and supported throughout the evening. From the moment we arrived, they made accommodations that truly made a difference. We were given early entry and escorted to a specially designated ADA section, which included seating for my mom and allowed caregivers to sit nearby--especially thoughtful considering the event was standing-room only. Spencer was exceptionally kind and helpful, checking in on us before the show began to make sure we were all set. Shaun and Anthony, stationed near the stage during the performance, helped us get additional chairs and made sure we had everything we needed to enjoy the show. Missy was amazing in her communication before the event, providing clear, detailed instructions on parking and arrival time, which made the entire process smooth and stress-free. If you or a loved one require ADA accommodations, I wholeheartedly recommend the Madrid Theatre. What could have been a challenging evening was turned into a beautiful night full of music, fun, and unforgettable memories. I've been here once for a concert. The doormen with metal detectors were actually very friendly. For some reason that surprised me. Maybe because I look non-threatening? The acoustics were as expected for an older venue. I was in GA standing room so can't say much for the tables upstairs. But the entire venue was easy to get in and out of when the show ended. My only suggestion for improvement is if you want to encourage more people to come to the venue - please post ideas on the parking situation. The tour bus took up most of the parking lot so we had to park about 3 blocks away on the street. Was this the best place to park? I don't know. I would like to hear if there is a closer parking lot, then I would consider coming here more often. read more

The Madrid has been around the block a time or two and while the venue is used for a wide range of activites including weddings, conferences and corporate events. This review is about what to expect at a live music event. The theater isn't as young as it used to be, but that's okay. When you enter you either have the option of walking upstairs to the balcony area or walking through some doors past the bar and the floor. The sound is surprisingly good. I don't say that to be smart, but for an older venue with higher ceilings, the rig does exceptionally well. As of this writing, the venue has mainly been focusing on alt-country, jazz, indie and singer songwriter acts, but I'm fairly confident that whoever you come to see will sound good. The bathrooms are little cramped, but they'll do. I would recommend getting what needs to be done earlier in the evening because they can get a messy as the evening moves along. The bar is small and can back up at times. I don't drink like I used to so it isn't an issue for me, but if you like a drink or two you might be a little strategic when you make you trips. Parking is quite scarce. Underline that quite part. There's a small lot next to the venue, but it's usually reserved for the performers and those who work at the venue. You'll have to find parking in the surrounding neighborhoods which means you might have to walk a bit. Please beware: The surrounding neighborhoods aren't unsafe, but the venue is smack dab in the middle of the city and you will need to be aware of your surroundings, especially if you've had a little bit to drink. read more

I have been in a lot of concert venues but this one by far was the best I've been in. The acoustics were amazing! The sound was clear and beautiful inside the theater. I was there for an unplugged concert so I wasn't expecting balls to the wall loud sound, just crisp clear vocals and I wasn't disappointed! If you have the chance to attend a concert here, you should. The seating is kind of weird on the floor and it's a small place with an 800 person occupancy. If you can get a set upstairs on the balcony, it's the best seat in the house. But the place is so small that no matter where you sit, you will have a good view of the stage. Parking was easy. From the outside, this place looks like nothing special but on the inside it's absolutely beautiful! There is actually a lot of room and it was decorated quite beautifully with the winter theme for the Big Brothers Big Sister's Charity Auction that I attended last weekend. The only reason this venue isn't a 5 in my opinion is because the area is a little sketchy sometimes. But it's quite great on the inside! read more

First time here, went to Space Jesus. Even though it's a smaller venue, it was very clean and perfect Acoustics! Upstairs VIP area is really fun, and no matter where you are you have a great view of the stage. Bathrooms are clean and bar is stocked. Coat check is always nice during the winter! read more

The Madrid theatre is a well-kept secret in Kansas City, as far as concerts go. The Madrid is an excellent venue to see a show, due to its intimate size and wrap-around balcony, but it loses out on many opportunities because of the popularity of the Uptown Theater. The Madrid recently underwent a renovation to clean up and update the structure and amenities. It offers a full bar at the back of the venue to keep our pallet whet during any show or event. The capacity supports up to 80 people for private parties and events and the Madrid hosts a "salsa dancing" night every second Friday of the month. read more

This is certainly one of the crown jewels of Kansas City's unique architecture. Love the brick work. Love the old-style marquis. Glad I wore my black Marilyn Monroe-style silk halter dress - fit in well with the ambience here. The inside is dark with rich reds and browns, vaguely reminiscent of burlesque venues. Unfortunately, the closest we came to hotties on stage was a group of drunken ladies on stage with the wedding band - yes, we "sang" along (a la "Girls just wanna have fun" karaoke style) & rocked to Journey. Sorry Madrid theatre staff. Food was mediocre and filling - very down-home cooking style: sloppy gravy-covered meats, green salad with creamy dressing, over-cooked green beans. The bartenders were quick and pouring large. (Although the minus 1 star is largely for not having green olives to make dirty martinis, and for appearing utterly confused by my order for a lemondrop instead.) I'd go back in a heartbeat, mostly to soak up the excellent architecture and ambiance inside. read more

I am the executive director of a non-profit and we held our gala here. The space is amazing...everything you could want! Any question was answered and the evening went off without an issue! I would highly recommend the Madrid to anyone wanting a gorgeous setting with a no hassle staff and atmosphere. We are using them next year and hopefully many more years to come!! read more

I'm not quite sure, but this might my favorite concert venue in the city. And granted, it's primarily a wedding venue, but it feels so much more open than the Midland. I mean the uh, Arvest Bank Theatre at The Midland. :/ But it's great for concerts for the same reasons it would be good for weddings; it has a great layout, good sight lines, the bar area is separated from the floor but still feels close by, and the wraparound balcony adds a quaintness to it. I won't speak much more to how it actually serves as a wedding venue, since I haven't actually looked into that. I imagine I'm being a little biased since I prefer smaller venues anyway (and smaller crowds). But I mean, I think about other venues and what I don't like about them, and I don't have those problems at Madrid. Sprint Center's sight lines aren't great, Uptown shows its age pretty badly, Midland is dank, and Cricket is normally obnoxious either because there are teens smoking weed everywhere or because it's outdoors and 99 degrees during the summer. I don't hate those venues that much; I'm simply exaggerating to make a point. The biggest issue with Madrid is the entrance and parking. The area you walk into is awkwardly small and laid out, which is not conducive to congregating or entering. But I wish Madrid picked up more headliners than it does. Not great for concerts... This place definitely is lovely and historic. Unfortunately, I think the circumstances under which I was there definitely altered my perception of this venue. I saw a free concert here, so they were allowed to fill the place to capacity. I'm sure this place is great when there is medium to moderate crowd control. There was limited room to dance, and no room to sit; we slumped against the wall. The line for the bar was a joke; both upstairs and down. I just can't picture going back based on my experience. The historic character of the theatre is lovely - however, I would seriously like a seat without having to pay a ridiculous price or buy a certain number of tickets. Tickets for Josh Ritter were over 40 to stand and if I'd been in St Louis, I could've gotten an assigned seat close to the stage for $25 plus fees. Makes me mad. C'mon set up some more chairs. From my first correspondence with Missy, the event coordinator at the Madrid, I knew I'd found the right venue for my wedding and reception. After a slight mishap at the first venue we'd booked (it shut down :( ), I was desperate to find something in the same area, for about the same price, on the same date. Luckily, the Madrid was all of those things (and a million times more). Planning a wedding from out of state is about as difficult as it sounds...unless you're working with someone as wonderful as Missy and the Madrid crew. From answering extremely random questions, to making sure I was on track with my planning schedule, to just being amazing in general, Missy was always prompt with responses and available when I needed her. One of the best things about the Madrid is that you can have your wedding ceremony and reception all in the same place. There is a nominal fee, but they will rearrange the first floor of the venue from rows of chairs for the ceremony to EXACTLY how you had planned for the reception. From dressing the tables, to putting the centerpieces exactly how they were supposed to be, to making sure the cake table was in the right place, they take care of everything. It was nothing short of a miracle how quickly and efficiently they can flip this room. Our guests were seriously blown away by the transformation. Everything - the food, the drinks, the staff, the tables, the place settings, the glassware, the security, the layout, the schedule - everything, was handled perfectly by Missy and her team of magicians. The day was coordinated from start to finish and went off without a hitch, thanks to them. I literally did not worry about anything. From the moment we arrived at the venue, we were in good hands. Everything was on time and my now-husband and I were always where we were supposed to be when we were supposed to be there - but, not in a " GET OVER THERE AND CUT THE CAKE NOW!" kind of way, in a perfectly coordinated dance kind of way. I'm sure I had some minor bridezilla moments throughout the planning process and the day of, but if I did, I wouldn't have known it from the way Missy gracefully handled everything. The preferred vendors for the Madrid will make your life super easy, as well. We used KC Catering for our dinner (buffet) and it was totally good for wedding food. We added on hors d'ouerves for the cocktail hour and they were great. The "house" DJ, Rusty, was awesome. Being the hours DJ allows him to tap into the amazing sound system at the Madrid, which is just the best. He's not a corny, annoying DJ, and did a great job adding the perfect songs to our preferred playlist. We also used the recommended chair cover company, and they were able to set up in a timely manner and everything looked perfect. You can't go wrong if Missy recommends you to someone there. They will be the best and will coordinate with her beautifully. We literally just showed up the day of and everything was taken care of, from start to finish. From coordinating times with the vendors to set up and clean up, to answering any question they had, my stress level related to vendors was probably a negative seven. The venue itself is, of course, beautiful. The 1920's feel shines through the entire space with little special touches everywhere. The stairs in the front with the fountain give a very grand entrance and the glimmering gold walls in the main theater area give an amazingly warm glow. The bars (yes, there's one upstairs AND downstairs) are incredible. Really amazing lighting and beautiful woodwork. My photos from the day turned out incredibly because the background in all of them was so great. I noticed there were some reviews about parking. So I should probably address that. The Madrid has two private, gated lots off Main St. The do have an attendant who will help people park, and they offer valet for an additional cost (I was a bride on a budget, so we went standard! :) But we had no issues. I truly cannot say enough nice things about the Madrid Theatre, Missy, and her team. I had the wedding day that everyone dreams of, without drama, stress, or frustrations (although, I did burn a hole in my wedding dress with a steamer, but that was totally unrelated to the Madrid). This venue is perfect, VERY reasonably priced (compared to other locations we saw and the cost of food/booze/linens/place settings/glassware/everything else that other places nickel and dime you on - p.s. the Madrid does not nickel and dime you, at all. Ask my cheap dad.) If you are considering the Madrid as the venue for your ceremony or reception, and have any questions that I might be able to answer from a bride's perspective, please feel free to message me. Aestetically, this is a beautiful place. From the outside it trasports you back to Kansas City's hey-days, ornate mouldings and colorful brickwork grab you from every angle. Inside, there is a really sprawling restaurant/performance-stage/bar set up, where you can find a table, stand at a table, or dance the night away. Depending on the act or the event, some parts of the theatre may not be used, but at least you can soak in the richness and beauty of this majestic theatre. Here's how the theater works: Show up to the show, wait in line, and find out at the door that you can't bring in a purse. Zero signs posted beforehand, which means all members of your group carrying a purse are sent back to the car and consequently back to the line. Then, while inside, discover the water fountains are shut off with the intention to drive you to their bar. Oh, cool, I guess you should buy a water then. Head to the bar and discover that there is a $10 minimum to buy a $2 water. Terrible way to treat someone who pays outrageous amounts already to go to a GA show in a dance hall. Enjoy the show while you only think about how good a water sounds. Right on. read more

The sound quality for the show I attended here recently was really awful. The theater itself was fine - liked having the option to go upstairs and watch the performers from above, but probably won't go there again on the off chance that the sound sucks as bad as it did. We could not have asked for a more beautiful venue than The Madrid Theatre. It was the very first place we looked -- and we knew the moment we walked in, that this was it! From the early stages of planning, up to the very last detail, Missy was incredible. We had our ceremony and reception here, and the flow between the ceremony, to the cocktail hour and flip for the reception was seamless! We utilized the stage with a great band, used the grand staircase for family photos, and the guests never had a wait for a drink at the beautiful Spanish bars. All of our guests said they wanted to all get married again, and use this event space! Missy and the staff were just the absolute best to work with! I attended a concert at the Madrid last night. It was really nice and very enjoyable! The theater has been well maintained.

I attended the Gregory Alan Isakov show a few weeks ago and was really pleased with the ambience of the place -- great room for live music. The staff was friendly and helpful, and their beer selection was small but great. I live nearby, so I'm glad that we have such a great music venue right here in the neighborhood. My wife and I were able to walk to dinner, then to the show, and then back home (and just think of how much better this will be when the street car comes down Main Street). I had only been to one concert there before (Regina Spektor ten years ago), and it seems the theatre has made some great improvements since then. Hope they keep bringing in good shows. read more
