Holiday Inn Express & Suites Mason City - Modern lighting!

The decor in our room is super cute, with adorable duvets, a gorgeous orange desk chair and mirror (I'd buy both for my home, tbh), and lots of sensible storage. There are outlets for USB and USB-C charging, ample attractive lighting, and you have the option to close the opaque window shade, a sheer shade, or both. You even get your choice of a soft or firm pillow. The bathroom and mini fridge are immaculately clean. I can't recommend this place highly enough. I almost wish we were here for longer than one night, as it really is so nice. It's refreshing not to be grossed out by a hotel. The woman at the desk was friendly and efficient! I would definitely stay here again if I were passing through. I'm so impressed that I forgot to wait until morning so I can comment on breakfast. I'll do that tomorrow. After a gloriously hot shower with moderate water pressure, we're at breakfast. There is a great array of options. I'm having a banana, Oikos yogurt, and an egg white omelet (a circle of egg white and peppers folded in half--genius). My mom is eating her weight in bacon, a banana nut muffin, and a biscuit with sausage gravy. There is sausage, as well as a cheese omelet and a pancake machine. Lots of fruit, cereal, yogurt, bread/bagels, etc. If you're on Mason City, it's impossible to imagine a better option than this Holiday Inn Express. Found the flaw: Fox News on the breakfast room tv. :(

Came back at 8pm and nothing had been done. Complained to the desk clerk (different person) who found me a new coffee maker. The TV remote was not working, because the remote sensor on the TV had fallen off the TV and down behind the TV -- I jury rigged it to work. Clearly no one was checking these things as they prepared the room. The room was supposed to be serviced every other day, but they missed my room, so had same towels and trash accumulating for 4 days. The elevators and hallway carpets went uncleaned (trash and dirt on the floors) for the entire time I was there. I'm complaining to Hilton and I won't be going back there.

There aren't a whole lot of hotel options in Mason City. (There isn't a whole lot of anything there…read moreactually, but that's another story) So when I learned I'd be traveling there, it was between the Intercontinental chain or the Hilton chain. I chose this Hampton Inn (Hilton property) because it was the newest. It ended up being a good choice. What I liked: The king suite was sufficiently spacious for what I needed. I had plenty of room to spread out and put all of my belongings. I really like the desk setup too. The bed was comfy. Bathroom in the king suite - Large bathroom (for a standard hotel) with larger than average closet space. I liked that the shower head was on one wall and the control knob was on the opposite wall. New hotel with modern feel. The staff was very courteous and nice. I got my requested room type and location. Good location. Within walking distance to several eateries (a few of them basically share the same parking lot) and a HyVee grocery store with a Starbucks inside is right across the street. This location has 4 or 5 dedicated Diamond member parking spots. What I didn't like/needs improvement: Cleanings- More attention to detail needed. I found one too many hairs from the desk to sheets to shower. And when I moved the mini ottomans (to clean them), I found a bunch of crumbs from the previous guest (I assume). Breakfast- Not a lot of options. Vegans had fruit (orange, apple, or banana) or oatmeal (the lady said she only uses water; no milk). There was cereal but they only offered cow milk. Parking- Every day, several employees were taking up the Diamond member parking spots. Regular spots were right there. (idk why this peeves me so lol) USB ports- the ones on the desk didn't work. (However, there are 2 more on the nightstand so it really wasn't a problem for me.) Kitchenette- I wish the suites would be upgraded to include a full-size fridge.

I was assigned a room on the third floor and when I first walked in, everything looked in order. The room appeared to be clean, but once I pulled back the sheets, a used paper towel fell to the floor. After a closer inspection of the paper towel, I called the front desk to let them know what I found. The lady on the phone asked what I would like done and I told her I would like to have housekeeping change my sheets and she said they were gone for the day. I then asked if I could have a new room. She told me to come back to the desk for a new room card. Once downstairs she had my new room card ready for me and I was now on the second floor. Again, everything in the room looked in order. The room was clean and had a king-sized bed. It had a work area with a satellite TV. There was a refrigerator, coffee maker, and ice bucket in the room. In the closet there was an iron and ironing board. In the bathroom there was a bar of soap and makeup remover towelette on the vanity and in the shower there was shampoo, conditioner and body wash. The room was fine, it was a little tough to control the temperature in this room and all four pillows were down-filled and terrible to sleep on, they flattened out too much. Based on my stay here, I would pick a different hotel the next time I'm in the area.

It's only about $50 per night to stay here, and it's great as a last resort, since most hotels were totally full due to the Independence Day holiday. You also get a free homemade breakfast, and you can eat it outside on the large porch while watching the birds and cats. Examples of breakfast entrees served are a breakfast quiche, breakfast casserole, and french toast. The couple who owns the inn is friendly too, and they like to come over and chat while you're eating. Because of this, I added a star to the rating. Otherwise, I would not stay here. There is no internet access, free wi-fi, cell phone service, or even phone in the rooms. No amenities, such as shampoo, conditioner, razor, or soap, is provided. I think this is bad when you've been traveling on an airplane. You are provided access to a refrigerator (unlimited sodas and bottled water - though they ran out of water) and microwave. There really isn't housekeeping service. The trash cans are never emptied (really bad after you've been on a road trip), the bed is never made for you, sheets aren't changed during your stay, and towels are replaced every other day (it seems). The worst part of the stay though was the smell of hydrogen sulfide whenever you ran the water. Because of this, I won't stay here again. If someone takes a shower, the whole room smells like rotten eggs, and it's disgusting. The same applies to brushing your teeth. If you brushed your teeth and used the tap water instead of bottled water, you'd have this rancid taste in your mouth. Gross!

There is very limited access to our everyday technologies, but it is also great to be able to quietly think and read on the front porch. Sandy and I stayed here from 8/1/2018 through 8/11/2018 and loved every minute of it. Judy made a wonderful country breakfast every morning, and Dale pretty well stayed out of her way, while regaling us with History and stories of rural life gone by. It is a working farm, but the Mills take time to help us enjoy the hospitality. Also, ask Dale for a quick canoe trip, it absolutely makes the trip, and is is incredibly relaxing.
