Tried to rip me off and then appeared to gloat about it when I caught him. Paul the owner responded to a web request I put in, for a price quote. He responded, by text message. Weird but fine, if the text etiquette is on point. His was a mess. He asks me to take pictures inside and out, of the windows. Ok sure, but I'm one town over and you could just pop by. He asks what I want, I say picture windows. He sends me a picture of double hang and says he recommends them. Don't need them. Then he just TEXTS me a price range. Red flag. Where's your quote with the type of door being used? Also, the number is high. I ask for the SKU to look it up on my own. He sends me a generic link to an affiliate landing page for DOUBLE HUNG DOORS. Ok, so here's where you have to use your best judgement. These guys have great ratings on multiple pages, so they obviously do excellent installs. But that doesn't mean they aren't ripping people off, because you can get similar work done for MUCH cheaper. That's where I got him, bc he wasn't willing to disclose where his range was coming from and then immediately tried to pass me off to Renweal by Anderson, which is widely known as THE biggest price-hike in the game. The safe bet with them is whatever they quote you initially is about double what it should actually cost. So it makes sense the owner thought it's a reasonable peer in the industry. My husband and I were only in town for a week and trying to tackle as much maintenance as possible in a very short window. In an age where so many companies subcontract everything out, it was incredibly refreshing to work directly with a father-and-son team who clearly take pride in their work. I had 18 windows and a basement door installed/replaced by Quality Windows and Doors (QWD). Here's how we found them/how it went. My wife poured through local Weymouth/South Shore Facebook groups. She found three companies that were most commonly mentioned as reliable/well received. I handled contacting each and having them stop by to give an estimate. All three were professional and responsive. I can say that QWD did not give the lowest/cheapest estimate - but they were by far not the most expensive either. What made us decide to go with them was that 1) they offered the best warranty on their labor 2) they are a local, family owned (father-son duo) business and 3) the price was reasonable and what I expected. Some things you should look out for when getting estimates/looking for a contractor to go with. First, most of these companies are all using the same exact windows. You should go for triple pane glass as it's the best product, and most of these contractors are using the same brand/model. Thus you're only paying for the cost of labor and the warranties they're offering you. Second, a lot of contractors will sub-contract out their work. Which means they're hiring workers they may not have any experience with working in your house. For me, I felt much more comfortable seeing that QWD has had the same guys working every part of the job from start to finish. I spoke with each of the individual workers throughout the day and a half they were at my house. They've all been working together for over a decade - that's as trustworthy a team as I could imagine. Then there was how the work went. I was able to clear out most of the materials in front of the windows before QWD arrived, giving them space to work. They showed up early both days they were at my house and worked as quickly and quietly as they could. My wife and I were both home working remotely and were able to work without disruption. Thankfully they were able to move the few things I couldn't on my own (ie a big treadmill, some of the larger bookshelves, etc.). They didn't complain about it at all, despite asking me to move everything beforehand. It's been about 4 months now since the work has been finished - and we are so happy with the work! We have genuinely noticed a change in the auditory levels in the house (ie the sound is better). I made a point to compare the temperature with the original windows before the work and with the new windows. There was clearly a big improvement with these triple pane windows QWD installed. They're great windows - our originals were 1960s era and these new ones can be pulled in and cleaned easily. Between the new windows and some affordable insallation in the walls (courtesy of the MA Save program) - our house is preserving the heat better than ever. These windows are the biggest home improvement project we've done in the 4 years we've owned our first home. We spent a lot of time looking for contractors, reading user reviews, and seeing the communal feedback. My wife and I are very happy with the work QWD has done. Our windows look great, the job was affordable, we are confident in the product/warranty we have, and we feel great having hired a local, competent business. I was in a bind because big old furniture was leaving my house on a Friday and big new furniture was coming on Saturday, and we had two different slider doors that I could not remove myself so the movers could do their jobs. I called Bill on Thursday and told him my dilemma. He agreed to come out on Friday and take the doors off before the junk folks came and he came back Saturday after the new furniture came in. (A 45 minute drive). He also took some broken screens we had and brought them back on Saturday too. Bill was very easy to work with and very accomodating. Those doors are a challenge. I'm going to need Bill again if those sliders ever have to come off again in the future. And for anything else I need related to his expertise, I'll call Bill. He's in my phone now. My husband and I reached out to Quality Window & Doors to get storm doors installed on our front & back entrances. It's nice in New England to have a layer of protection during the winter and screens to let the breeze through during the warmer weather. Living in our neighborhood for over 3 years, it was something long overdue. Paul came out to our home on a Saturday morning, he was super nice and personable. He had gotten in touch with us prior to the meeting and went over the best options, but came by to get some measurements. Unbeknownst to us, as new home-owners, we didn't realize our front door needed to be re-finished and its current condition was not great (i.e. some weathering and areas of discoloration). The door basically would have needed replacement if we let it go untreated another season. Paul was honest and transparent with us, he let us know the door needed to be taken care of, and ultimately saved us a lot of money. We would have ended up leaving it be, had he not said something to us. When our storm doors came in Paul was able to install them from outside, so neither one of us had to stay home from work.
