This time the scoop full looked good, but it cost me $9. When I got it home they were good sized but rock hard. And I mean ROCK hard in the "may damage your teeth" hard. Haisai is licensed - so no need to worry about what wine to bring to pair with the food. The wine is local Ontario wine - which always surprises me how good it can be. You can buy by the glass or half bottle but they don't specifically pair the wine with the 10 course tasting menu. The wines that Nobuyo recommended were excellent. The food was very good - especially for winter - we were expecting potatoes and pulses since they apparently use only local food - however there were a couple of seafood (no sea close to this part of Ontario) dishes and there was good variety. The atmosphere in the restaurant was very nice - the people were very happy to be there and there was a happy buzz in the place. The decoration of the dining room was "interesting" - embedded in the walls (near us) were an old clutch plate and parts of meat grinding equipment, tree branches and animal horns - a bit like a cave decorated with whatever was lying around - albeit a comfortable cave. I sampled their entire range which included nine ciders, including a couple of new ones like "Sumac" which gets its lovely colour from local sumac, iced cider as well as their non-alcoholic spiced warm apple cider. All of their ciders are made from Duntroon Parish and Ontario heritage hand-picked apples and are sulphite-free, gluten-free and vegan. They also have a menu of small plates that changes seasonally. During our visit we enjoyed charcuterie, locally made empanadas with nachos and dips as well as the tastiest popcorn topped with garlic seasoning made with garlic grown on the farm. They offer something for the whole family, including your furry friends! From food pop-up events, to live music, to vendor markets, there is rarely a dull moment on the farm. I mentioned that they are a four season destination and one of the highlights of my summer last year was their seafood boil evening. Since my most recent visit was at the tail end of the winter season, they still had their "Winter Utopia" set up which included fireplaces, a dome, and you could still see the signage from their winter snowshoeing trails. I can't wait to see what they have in store for this summer! Inside, among the shelves and fridges, you'll find some of the best local and seasonal products the community has to offer. Black garlic from the farm, Cabin Kitchen ready made meals, Blue Mountain Tea Co. tea, Loco Por El Asado empanadas, Mother Butter shortbread, fresh eggs, local meats and cheeses were just a few of the items they had in stock during this visit.

With shopping local and Canadian becoming more encouraged in 2018 my parents and I decided to stop here for a bit of grocery shopping. I love shopping from farms like these when in season of course as it supports local folks and communities that deserve help from city slickers like me! I picked up some lamb chop (which is my first time having lamb) a jar of peach raspberry jam plus some cheese curds; my mother picked some peas, strawberry syrup and lamb too. All in all I liked it there and may divert our usual route on purpose just to come back and pick up some other items that I didn't have room in the cooler to take back to home. :)
