Second time to enjoy a show- this time MJ. Efficient entrance and plenty of beverage and snack bars. The free Wi-Fi (Password VanWiFi) makes accessing the electronic tickets a breeze. Enjoy!

Came here to watch Brett Goldstein's stand up show. It was larger than I expected and was totally sold out. Lobby had several beverage and snack stations to purchase light snacks and adult beverages and sodas. Pepsi only for sodas... The theater seats reminded me of my old high school auditorium wooden seating. Decent enough, but can get a bit uncomfortable if you have to sit in them too long. All seats have a decent view of the stage. Sound is pretty good. Decent location, easy to walk to if you're staying downtown.

Outside the venue, they have a nice looking fountain with sculpture lights around it. It's actually pretty nice during the sunset when the lights around the area are lit up. There are some benches with plenty of shade as well. Makes for a nice instagram post. At the venue, It was pouring rain outside so they provided plastic umbrella bags that you can put your wet umbrellas in just in front of the doors. There are two checkpoints as you go in. The first one is security people who check bags for laptops and food/drinks. They make you open your backpack. Unfortunately they saw my water bottle and told me to empty it on the street before going in. They were apologetic about it though. The second checkpoint are the ushers who scan the barcode of the tickets and direct you to the door number where your reserved seat is located. I asked one of the ushers in the lobby where I can refill my water bottle and they were pretty helpful about it. They even offered to fill it up for me. Note that the water was directly from the sink and it was lukewarm. The whole water bottle situation was a small negative for me on this visit. The performer I saw that night, Belgian pop singer Angele, was an hour late. She arrived at the stage at 9:10 but the concert was supposed to start at 8pm according to the showtime on the website. The crowd was getting rowdy at around 9pm so the impatience was definitely felt. Thankfully the venue had free public wifi called Van Wi-fi and I was able to surf the internet on my phone in the meantime. It's only a 2 out of 5 bars signal strength so the internet speed felt pretty slow. The concert area is very big with high ceilings. It had ambient lights on the ceilings that resemble stars you'd see at night. Design wise, the concert seating area is the most beautiful part of the whole venue. It was modern with nice wooden accents which gave a warm and inviting feeling. The walking areas between each seating section are wide and can fit a lot of people who walk through without any problems. It was a full house and I had no problem walking around and getting to my seat. The chairs at the seating area of the concert are clearly marked with the section, row, and the chair number so it was easy to find my seat. The seats themselves are made of wood and the seat padding is made of some sort of fabric. They are adequate, comfort wise. If you have a jacket or bag, you can easily put it on the chair without it falling as you stand up during the concert. There was an usher at the entrance of the concert seating area and they were very nice helping me find my seat. Somebody sat in my reserved chair but the issue was quickly resolved. The usher apologized for the inconvenience. One thing that really bugged me was that a lady that sat to me kept shouting to her friend a couple seats away during the pre show and leaning forward yelling her name to try to get her attention. Later, near the beginning of the concert, everyone in the audience stood up. She walked and came to my area and squeezed herself right in between me and her friend and stood beside her so they could dance and talk together until the end of the show. It became kind of cramped and made it uncomfortable for me. I wish there was a way to prevent inconsiderate people from doing this. As for the sound quality, the concert can definitely benefit with an upgraded sound system. The music sounded a bit tinny because the treble sound level was set too high. This particular singer has a high pitched female vocal voice so that might have to do with the "s" sounds sounding too sharp. The concert lights are typical of what you'd see at any concert. They are plentiful, bright and colorful, and fast. They looked really good in the dark as the singer sang in the spotlights. The show's visual special effects were just a single screen projection of pictures and videos on a big screen behind the stage. Very simple and minimal but did the trick. Not sure if that's the limitations of the concert venue or by design from the band. The special effects could be better though. Overall I had a good time attending the music concert at Queen Elizabeth Theatre and wouldn't mind coming back again to this venue for another concert. Your mileage may vary on the experience depending on the row you sit at because some people may not be so considerate of others. The positive and exciting energy from the crowd and Angele's songs really made the night special despite some of the negative things I mentioned above. I had excellent seats and I was in the 5th row in the center section so I experienced everything up close and perfectly saw the performers. It's worth paying extra for good seats closer to the stage at this venue. 3.5 out of 5 stars rounded up to 4 since yelp doesn't do half stars. (I had a way longer review but i reached yelp's word limit, hah!)

Over the years this venue has been the scene of many memorable events. From Lady Gaga to Cats, for live entertainment the acoustics are still pretty solid. I don't think there is a bad seat in the house. For average height people there is adequate leg room and you can see over the people in front of you. Entry is accessible along with parking in adjacent lots and street. They have several concessions which help to manage congestion and line ups for drinks and snacks. You can take your beverages to your seats! Bathrooms in the basement are quite tired and in need of an update, but there are a good number of them and they were clean. I noticed how quickly the venue cleared when the show was over, with several exit points. Compared to some other theatres in New York and London, it's quite efficient. Our most recent visit was Mean Girls, which was excellent.

I went to the theater to watch a Hamilton production. The show was amazing - the characters were compelling and the cast brought the show to life. We were in the balcony center and though we were far from the stage, the production ensured that we could distinguish all the characters based on clothing. We could hear them well. While people think Hamilton was the main cast member, the orchestra completely steals the show. I believe there are few issues with the actual theater 1. The seats were way too small. I felt like I was stuck in the seat and was constantly bumping arms with the person sitting next to me. 2. There is only one washroom on the floor which means there is a huge queue outside. 3. I liked that they had a small counter where you could buy drinks and munchies but again, it was catering to a massive number of people so it took some time.

SHEN YUN - TERRIBLY DISAPPOINTING I don't know how Shen Yun manages to keep its good reviews at the top when it is a complete and utter SCAM. It is exorbitantly priced for production values that come out of a bad kids show for public television in the 1950's. It is a heavily propaganized bit of malarkey that condemns "evolution", promotes creationism and "purity", shows "God" as an old white man in the clouds and is heavily sexist. More importantly the dancing is amateur at best- I have seen more creative and athletic routines in a high school cheerleading competition. It is in no way a cultural experience. It is boring and repetitive and pedantic. My kid begged to leave at intermission and he loves the arts. I'm embarrassed I got suckered. Here is proof I was there (pic) March 25, 2023:

On the square outside of the QE theatre before Shen Yun started.

Having seen the show Shen Yun in this theatre for a couple of years now, I would give the show itself a 5 star but the theatre a 4 star. When there's a live orchestra accompanying the show like Shen Yun does, I feel that the sound of the orchestra is not brought out to its full power. Those are top notch musicians so their skill kind of made up for that, so that you're still immersed by the music. But I do wish the engineering or acoustic treatment of the theatre could be better to do full justice to a live orchestra. And....washrooms! There's always a huge lineup for women's washroom during intermission, that the people at the last of the line sometimes had to be late for the second half. It was a full house so that kind of explains for that, though. Tips: if you see a line too long, go upstairs or downstairs to check out washrooms on other levels. Some of them might be less busy.

I don't know the entire history of the theatre, but apparently it was built in 1938. The Rio is known for screening cult classic movies and live shows, and in 2012, it fought the outdated BC Liquor board so that movie theatres could serve alcohol -- a big win! In the past, I have gone to a handful of shows (mostly movies showing at the Vancouver International Film Festival), but I didn't go often for two reasons: many of the movies I was interested in started way too late for me (such as at 9:30pm or 11pm), and years ago, I had a really negative experience. I don't recall when the incident happened -- perhaps it was after they had acquired a liquor licence -- but you had to be 19+ to go (that's the legal drinking age here), and while I was much older than 19, apparently I looked young, so I used to get so much shit for my appearance. Shortly before the event, my ID had expired and I was waiting for a new one to come in the mail. In the meantime, I was using my passport as ID. The person at the door was extremely rude and aggressive and made a big deal of specifically asking ME for ID -- from his tone, I think he didn't expect me to be of age. I pulled out my wallet from my purse to grab my ID, then remembered that I didn't have it as it was being renewed, so put it back into my purse and reached for my passport. As I was reaching for my passport, the rude and aggressive employee sneered, "Oh, you forgot your ID, I see, huh?" Yes, even thought this was nearly 15 years ago, I still remember this incident, and it always upset me. The guy was so fucking rude. Also, they used to insist on stamping your hand, and I hate having the inside of my wrist stamped because the ink rubs off on the side of my shirt, so prefer to have the top of my hand stamped. This guy was also rude about this. Anyway, due to events not working with my schedule and my encounter with the rude employee, I had little interest in going to the Rio unless it was for the film festival. However, recently, there have been several events I have been interested in: a screening of The Shawshank Redemption with a Q&A with Gil Bellows in July; a screening of The Room presented by Greg Sestero in August; a screening of Clue in October; a screening of the original Carrie presented by Mike Flanagan in October; and a film festival movie in October. And each time I had a great experience -- no more rude and aggressive employees! The most recent event I went to was John Waters live on December 3. My husband is a huge John Waters fan, so I bought tickets for his show. However, I had only bought the regular tickets, and my husband then told me he would have liked the VIP tickets (better seats, a signed poster, a post-show Q&A). On the Rio website, they clearly state that all sales are final and that tickets cannot be returned or exchanged. So what did I do? Emailed them asking if I could exchange the regular tickets for the more expensive VIP tickets, despite their policy. Their answer was an enthusiastic "absolutely!" and it was easy to exchange the tickets. Amazing customer service! I am a fan of the Rio and I look forward to seeing more shows and events! The performance we saw last night was AMAZING. I highly recommend following Ivan Tucakov (http://tamburarasa.com/shows.php). In this show, Ivan brought his guitar genius and sounds of eastern and western Europe (Spanish, variations of Flemenco, Fado... fused with Balkan traditional sounds and beats) and blended playfully in a duet with traditional and classically trained Orianna White on piano. The interplay was moving to say the least, and the overall performance was pure MAGIC. The performance was greatly enhanced by the venue where, during intermission, we sampled wines brought in especially for the performance and lingered and mingled with friends and the performers.
