This is such a cute and quirky cafe - it's feature being an open counter onto the street, where delectable goodies are whipped out of the oven and displayed on their trays. The owner is the Queen of queens and quite a character. I always leave with a smile on my face even if it's just a passing comment as I'm walking past. There is a second level with an electric collection of tables to dine at - great if you're with a group bigger than 4 - there's little atmosphere here, however there's loads of it at street level and the handful of plastic tables on the footpath out the front are usually full of regulars enjoying the food and conversation. Queen of Tarts is a cafe I remember my father taking me to when I was a child... it seems to have existed for at least 20 - 25 years in more or less the same format. So if longevity is indicative of quality, this place has got it in spades! (Tragic pun intended). I don't go here for the coffee... although not bad, there are better offerings nearby; it is the food which keeps me going back. Fresh, tasty and reasonably priced, the pies, lasagnes and quiches are all homemade and especially good. They come served with your choice of salad or vegetables (it depends on what's in season and what they have made up on the day but you'll be given choices). This place is about honest food that's simple and tasty. It is also great for those who are keen for a bit of friendly banter with the very eccentric proprietor whose name I have shamefully forgotten. He is perhaps the modern day embodiment of the queen of tarts herself; holding no bones about affectionately labelling me a tart on most visits! I assume this is intended as a complement... surely, he is just insinuating we have a lot in common? His unique charm is lost on some, but intentions are good and he will definitely make sure you and your stomach are taken care of. Highly recommended! read more

You know when you go to a place where the supposed ~best~ coffee in town is, and your latte is served by a too cool, hungover 20 year old with a beard? Yeah, me too. It's a bit of a downer! And if turning that frown upside down is a talent then Queen of Tarts is a prodigy. Come here for tasty coffee, not snobby coffee. My soy latte is delish, even without sugar and as a major sweet tooth that is saying a lot. Queen of Tarts has a gorgeous owner, hilarious sexual innuendo, a bit of disco music to pep you up and AMAZING home made food (think quiche, pies, cannoli and the best damn lemon tarts of your life). After coming here for 5 years I just have to say the service and quality of food has never been less than awesome, and it shows. This little cafe is famous for the QUEEN OF TARTS behind the counter. The owner loves flirting and joking around with EVERYONE... and no one is spared his awesome sense of humour. If you don't like a little innuendo with your coffee and cake then go to Cibo but if you love having your day brightened with a good giggle then look no further. The food is all home cooked tarts, pies, pastas, etc along with all the sweets he has on offer you will certainly be satisfied with the feeling of comfort that comes over you when eating his home made treats. The coffee ain't bad but you don't come here for that, it's purely for the entertainment value of watching the owner interact with his customers and passers by. Half the time I hold business meetings here I don't know if I'm the one being flirted with or if my male guest is but whatever the outcome you always end up blushing and giggling like a school girl. The owner of this place clearly gets what makes good business: - a musical atmosphere - remembering customers names/faces - reasonably quick service - making time to chat with everyone It's no wonder he has daily regular customers who come back every time just to see him (oh and of course order one of his lovely coffees or treats). The only thing that concerns me about this place is how long things sit out on the counter for, but before refrigerators I guess that's what everyone did! If I'm ever in need of a bit of a perk up (both from beans and from a laugh) Queen of Tarts will be my first stop. You have to come here just for a chat with the owner. I can come here in the worst of moods and leave smiling, after he has made his third joke about the 'length' of the sausage roll. He is the most flamboyant, happy and full-of-energy person I have ever spoken to. Working by himself he manages to run around doing about 40 things at once and ensuring all customers are happy. It is mainly a catering company, but they also have a range of lunch items available. Personally I love them. I have sampled most things from the store, I must recommend the quiches. I also have a soft spot for the desserts- yes the tarts! You can also get them in smaller sizes so they aren't too much after demolishing your lunch. There is not much room to sit at the little cafe, but you can often squish up on a bench or take your food to go. read more

Agree with all reviews. Very relaxed, homely, comfortable (unless you don't like sexual innuendo) environment with all the tarts/cakes by the window shop-front for all to see. Paper provided, owner loves a chat. Our food was delicious and in fact everything looks great to eat. The coffee was at about 80% (it lacked a bit of character which is just the bean choice) but quite good nevertheless. I can see myself being back every time I'm driving past! read more

My regular place is full, so I venture further down the street for some baked goodness for breakfast. The smell of fresh baked quiche had me do an about turn and float down the road like in a cartoon. I had found breakfast today. I felt a little dirty, like I was cheating on my regular coffee shop,so the name Queen of Tarts was appropriate. But oh my! That quiche. So good. Quiche for days. Hutt street is a small community, and I know people will talk, but I don't care, I want to lock myself in a dark room with this quiche and not ever come out, except of course to acquire more quiches. This little hole in the wall sports a sign declaring them as catering specialists and from what I've tasted so far, catering from here would set your function head and shoulders above the rest! read more

This my regular morning coffee stop on my way to work. A great way to start the day. I always leave with a smile on my face. The coffee is great and the food ( all prepared on site ) never disappoints. But most of all the entertainment provided by the owner Genetto is second to none. This is a cool little cafe. I've really only grabbed a coffee and a muffin here, and that's all I've really got to go on. The coffee was okay. I mean, they hadn't burned the milk or used a really bad bean, but it just wasn't amazing. But that's okay, because it's the muffin that I need to talk about. Actually, no, I don't think that words really could do justice to that muffin. I don't know if it was just a freakishly good muffin, or every muffin that this place sells is that good, but really, damn, it was great. Like Tegan suggests, maybe grab a coffee somewhere nearby.
