After stretches we went into some hula moves (Ka'o, huli, ami, kaholo, etc.) the moves are a little different than the ones we learned at our first halau. Anyways I really enjoyed this class; I love how Auntie Ida instructs and directs the moves. Feel and move with the sound of the beat... 1, 2, 1, 2... (Dancing Tahitian and Hula) I've been dancing with Ida for about 2 months now and I've enjoyed every moment of it. The men and women of Kaleo welcomes you with open arms. At first I was very shy and didn't speak to anyone but after a few classes I've made new friends and enjoy learning the new dances. If you're looking for a halau to just exercise or even to use your talent to participate with Tahiti Fete this is the place to be. We practice twice a week and Ida offers Hot Hula classes too. I've watched them and talk about a work out. On a side note: RAW MANA Fitness is also in this facility. Check them out if you need a personal trainer.

After a long pandemic pause, my return to the San Diego Musical Theatre reminded me why I fell in…read morelove with this gem in the first place. Somehow, it's even better now! There's literally NO bad seat in this intimate theater. I'm not exaggerating. While the balcony seats at the downtown Civic Theatre might leave you squinting at tiny figures at premium prices, here I felt like I was practically part of the show regardless of where I sat. And at these super reasonable prices? It's almost criminal how much value you're getting. Walking into their production of "Hello, Dolly!" I was immediately struck by how the modest stage might compare to larger Broadway venues. This is a place where size absolutely doesn't matter here. The creative team masterfully used every square inch of that space, with choreography that had me wondering how they fit so much spectacular dancing into such a cozy setting. Those dancers deserve medals for their spatial awareness alone! What truly sets SDMT apart is the caliber of talent they attract. This isn't just "good for local theater"--these are performers who deliver professional-quality entertainment that had me smiling from the opening number to the final bow. The acting was so engaging that I completely forgot there wasn't a traditional orchestra. Did I miss it? Not for a second. The performers commanded the space so completely that any potential limitations simply vanished. While here are no actual curtains, it didn't detract from the experience, this adds to the intimate, immersive quality that makes this theater special. You're not just watching a show, you're part of its world from the moment you take your seat. For North County residents, this place is a revelation. The easy drive and FREE parking situation (though come early, as spaces are limited and you might need to street park) makes this infinitely more accessible than the downtown venue. No parking fees, no traffic nightmares, just straight to the entertainment. Walking out after the show, I found myself repeating "wow, wow, wow" like a happy theater mantra. I'm already excited for their next production.

Her teacher, Kelsey, was patient, kind, and incredibly attentive, creating a calm and encouraging environment where young children could learn and grow with confidence. Ariana loved her classes and often talked about them at home, practicing movements and expressing genuine excitement about ballet. The teaching style struck a beautiful balance between structure and warmth, helping her build coordination, musicality, and a love for the art without pressure. We had to pause due to welcoming a newborn and a particularly busy season for our family, but we absolutely plan to return once things settle down. San Diego Academy of Ballet left a very positive impression on us, and we would happily recommend it to families looking for thoughtful, high-quality ballet instruction.

The level of instruction is top tier with professional training for singing, dance, and acting. The level of fun and comradery is so high that he's come away with friends he still hangs out with a year later. The best part for the kids is the show they put on at the end of the camps or the rising starts production. For the short amount of time they work on the show in the camps (longer for the production), the kids put on an amazing show that blows the audience away. My husband found Creative Dance Theatre 3 years ago when we were looking to move to another studio…read moreafter aging out of the current school. I messaged with the owner and office manager and my child was able to attend a class to see if it was good fit. It was. First year they took tap/ballet and a yoga class. Year 2 was tap/ballet and cheer/pop, year 3 is ballet/contemporary and Acro. They have a wide variety of classes, with varying age groups, offered daily at various times, making it easy to find a class to fit your child's age and schedule. Because it is a small studio, it is a more personalized experience. Class sizes are a reasonable amount, the same teachers teach year to year, the owner and office manager are very responsive to emails (my primary way of communication). The school dance "year" follows SDUSD schedule. Starting in August and finishing in May. The yearly recital is held in May and is optional. If your dancer wants to participate they can, but if they prefer not to do they do not have to and their dance "year" ends at the end of the current payment cycle (end of February). In addition to dance classes during the year, they have added dance camps. They host birthday parties and have a summer session if kids want to dance during the summer. Since the summer classes are a shorter length of time it is a great time to try a type of dance that your dancer may not be as sure of. With that said if your child is at an age where they can do 2 different classes with an age range for example ballet/tap 4-6 years old or ballet/tap 6-9 years old if you start in one class and feel like your child would be a better fit in another you can swap. I think it is dependent upon the teacher agreeing. I feel like when we switched to this studio my child did the younger and older class and the teacher is like "they would be fine in either" so we selected the older aged class. The teachers do a great job of teaching a group of kids with varying experiences. They are patient and explain the dance steps and make recommendations or modifications based on the child. The classes are a stretch, warm up, dance and then dismissal. Since this is a non competitive school each child is met where they are and allowed to learn and grow at their own pace. The other thing, I have enjoyed as well as my child is that while there is an "adult" teacher there is also a "student" teacher. These are usually students who are in high school who also dance at the studio. Many of these student teachers have been dancing at CDT since they were the age of my child! Billing switched last year from monthly to 3 payments spread out at enrollment, November and February. If doing the block payments is an issue if you reach out to the owner and office manager they are very reasonable with finding payment terms that work with your family and budget. If you take multiple classes there is a 10% discount. The dress code is dance wear but they are very flexible in what the kids can wear. No pressure to buy from them or a certain studio. For ballet ( my child is not en pointe) I have ordered leotards and ballet shoes on Amazon. I also ordered tap shoes on Amazon, as at this age the size changes quickly. The studio even keeps a supply of shoes at the studio (usually previous dancers shoes in good condition) so if your child forgets them or maybe in between sizes you can "try before you buy." All of the information about the studio, pricing, classes, attire is found on their website. It is easy to communicate with the owner and office manager. If there was a downside I would say that it is not being able to communicate directly with your child's teacher if they might be absent (due to illness). I typically just email the office manager and owner and ask them to pass along the message but there have been some hiccups this year with some information being communicated and needing a response in one class but nothing was communicated in the other class. It was easily resolved by an email to the owner and office manager, and I understand they are busy managing a lot of teachers, kids, parents etc but it is truly the only compliant I can think of. If you live in the area, have a child in the area I highly recommend checking them out!

As if it was fate, I read an article by San Diego magazine that mentioned the Red Spade Theater. I had never heard of it before, but with an affordable ticket price, I thought why not? I pre-ordered the tickets online and we enjoyed the most magical evening with Sebastian! There is plenty of parking in the area and it's easy to access. The theater is so small and intimate. There were maybe 20 people in the audience with us and everyone had a chance to participate in the show. Now, I'm kind of a skeptic. I was trying to pay attention to all the different spots on the stage. When he'd tell us to look at the cards, I'd look at his hands or the table, but he wasn't giving anything away. After seeing Sebastian, I have to believe that magic is real. I swear things just disappeared right in front of my eyes. It was an incredible show. This is truly one of the best possible date nights in San Diego. This show was incredible and Sebastian is so talented. I'm in awe!

Our evening started at the small wine bar next door. It is a cute bar with friendly owners. There, we got a couple glasses of wine to start off the night, when the magician came in to start a few tricks at our table. He made his way around to all of the couples in the bar. We then brought our wine into the small theater. it looked like there was room for about 30 people, but our show had only 8 people. We filled the front row. The show was very crowd interactive, and I found myself on stage immediately. I realized that the magician had been interviewing people in the bar in order to be able to talk about them in the show. With an audience of 8, we were definitely able to participate quite a bit. It was mostly card and slight of hand. I appreciate how close up everything was, and thought he did a really good job. All in all, it was a fun show, and an interesting way to spend an evening. Perhaps I'll return after a while and enjoy the show again sometime. At $32, you can't beat the price. It made for a fun date night.
