I took Kickbutt Karaoke lessons a few months ago and loved it! I am not a fan of group classes, but my instructor made us all feel comfortable and capable. She spent about fifteen minutes per student and even asked for our feedback throughout our lessons. She took her time helping us nail the high notes and achieve proper breath control in songs that are harder to sing. The best part, of course, is the performance at the bar. Each week leading up to the bar trip, we were given tips on how to interact with our audience and how to not just sing but how to give a performance. We also get to dine with the owners who are very passionate about their music school. I love it! I'd recommend taking the class, especially if you have anxiety about performing. read more

We rented a beginner's violin. When we returned it they said the bow was damaged and charged us $100 to replace it. We took the "damaged" bow to a shop to repair, and they said it was in good shape and didn't need any repairs. Our teacher also looked at it and said it looks like it's In good shape and a bow like that is only worth $20-$30. They won't talk to us about the problem so we're just out the $100 they charged us. read more

It was a nice store, although it's more of a music school. I was hoping for more individual sheet music, however they seem stock more books with a variety of pieces of music. I was able to find my favorite piece, Claire de lune!!! That aside they encompasses all genera's musically. The clerk was friendly, the store was clean, and organized!!! I have visited the store five times and each time there was absolutely no customer service. Every employee I came across, including an owner, ignored me as I walked in to purchase sheet music. Today, in fact, I went in and the person there was having a conversation with a fellow employee. I picked out my music, went up to the counter and had to slap the sheet music books down on the counter a couple of times to get her attention. Every time I go in I'm ignored and never asked if I want help or even looked at to acknowledge my presence. Unfortunately, this is the only place close to where I live where I can get sheet music, so that is why I've gone in and purchased multiple times. If there we're another music store near me. Now that people can gather in a limited way, my family chose to have my mother's burial service this week and asked me to play flute at the ceremonies. I haven't played in years having sold my flute years ago to pay bills. David at La Jolla music found an appropriate used flute for me to purchase. I couldn't test it due to COVID restrictions which is completely understandable. When I got it home, I found it wasn't a good fit for me. I emailed the store and received a quick response from David. He allowed me to return that instrument and select one that turned out to be just perfect for my needs. David was extremely professional and friendly. My son and I came in to check on a saxophone rental a few days ago, and unfortunately they didn't have any available. I left my name and number for them to contact me upon any returns, not really expecting a call. As promised, Eric I believe, called me the next day to let me know they just had one return from the shop. When I went to pick it up, the man and woman behind the desk were very helpful with all of my questions, which made me feel at ease due to my lack of musical experience. We started as customers at La Jolla Music 4 months ago, after the new owner (Jaw---a UCSD grad who is a musician) took over and the store moved across the street to new facilities. I am impressed with what we've encountered to date. This store isn't trying to be a "Guitar Center" with a ton of inventory. It's more a community business that provides high quality lessons and quality instruments for adults/children. I've found they offer excellent customer service and will order whatever you need, and they provide musical expertise and advice based on their experience as musicians. It feels to me like a music store that serves the needs of the community quite well. To give detail: Until 4 months ago, I'd never met Jaw or anyone at LJ Music. This review is objective and I was not asked to write it. What led us to LJ Music: We wanted to rent a coronet, which I discovered (from an exhaustive search) isn't an easy instrument to locate for rent. I called LJ Music and they had one to rent (this was August). I got busy at work and delayed calling them back for several weeks, and by the time I finally called, someone else had rented their coronet. My child was really disappointed, as she was ready to start lessons. Jaw jumped through all kinds of hoops to obtain another coronet, and he called me back regularly to update me on the progress of the instrument's order and arrival. Second: After the instrument arrived, my child started coronet lessons at LJ Music and I have been impressed by the quality and expertise of the teacher. My child is learning and advancing quickly. I've sat in on lessons and my opinion is that the teacher is highly skilled, makes the kids learn the detail and how to read music, and is really devoted to his students. My child likes the lessons even though they are serious music lessons that push her to do her best. Her teacher gets genuinely excited when she has mastered something and there is no B.S. to him. I think kids can spot when a teacher really wants them to succeed and is dedicated to them. From reading the Bios on the wall of all the teachers at LJ Music, I get the impression that Jaw has hired high quality teachers who know kids. Third: the new store and music rooms are modern, clean, well maintained---totally different from the old store. Very streamlined look to the place and everything is new and has good "feng shui". There's a sofa and chairs at the front of the store. It's a nice place to hang out every week while my child has a lesson. Fourth: my child decided to switch instruments after about a month of lessons (had been debating between coronet and saxophone) and Jaw was nice enough to loan us a saxophone so both instruments could be used for one lesson. Fifth: Jaw was great about switching our rental contract to the new instrument, when my child decided to switch from coronet to sax. He did it without any hassle and with a very friendly attitude. I thought that was pretty nice of him, particularly after he'd done that entire goose chase to get a coronet for us and here we were returning it after less than 2 months. Sixth, a guy named Jeff also works there (a musician who teaches there too) and I've noticed that he and Jaw are always very nice to kids when they come for lessons. With my own child: Jeff and Jaw always greet her and smile, they showed her how to clean and use each instrument and spoke to her with respect and as an equal (even though she is fairly young). They gave us knowledgeable advice about what we would need for the instrument (e.g., a few back-up reeds, etc.) They haven't tried to sell us stuff we don't need. The favorite thing is the tub of free Red Vine Licorice on the counter--a Red Vine given to each kid at the end of the lesson for practicing during the week. Conclusion: I think the negative Yelp reviews for LJ Music must have been related to the store under its prior ownership. I can unreservedly recommend the new LJ Music and I hope others will give it a try. Would be nice to see this business succeed so that a small independent music store will continue to survive in La Jolla for the benefit of the community. read more

The La Jolla Music from under the old ownership is completely unrecognizable from the new store! After the ownership and location changed, the store completely renovated. Now La Jolla music has a much bigger facility and has a nice lounge area for anyone waiting for a lesson. The employees are all very friendly and are willing to answer all your questions about lessons, instruments, etc. The teachers are also very highly skilled and work with people of all ages and all levels. This is great place to check out for music lessons or just to buy some sheet music. (They also have a good selection of Beatles stuff, if you're a sixties fan.) I agree with Alison P's review that all problems with La Jolla music were probably solved under the new owner. read more

We started coming here Fall 2014. Both our kids are taking lessons from Josh Voss. He is a fantastic guitar teacher! Our boy likes rock and our girl is into country/pop. Not sure why the ratings are low here, but we've never had a problem with the front desk, scheduling, guitar rental for a month, or lessons. This store has wonderful employees who are very knowledgeable and friendly - easy to work with. However, after renting from them for several years, paying on time, loyal customers, we weren't offered any better deal on the instrument than anyone who walked in off the street - and the price of the instrument many hundred dollars more than the other shops in town. Wish I had rented from the other shops, am now feeling trapped into paying substantially more than the instrument is worth solely because of the equity from our rental. read more

I am Laila Mirkazemi, I am playing the violin. I am in Kelly Duley class. I have been practicing with her for about 3 years. And I feel that I have improved so much after being in her class. She gives me such amazing, fun songs. These songs make me want to practice. She challenges me instead of giving me easy songs so that I can improve. I have loved the sounds of all instruments, and it would be amazing to be able to try another. If anyone is looking for a music teacher then this is the place.
