Offley's English tour was the earliest walk-in I could find on a Sunday (11:30, I think) and even though I waited, I was happy I went. I forget my guide's name, but she was great. It's an active cave, so you can see the aging Ports. Learning the history was interesting. Even if you've done various wineries/distilleries/breweries, Port has a different backstory, and each cellar has a different backstory, so it was still engaging. I thought I would be bored, because let's be honest, visiting these places is all about the drinking, but I wasn't bored at all. I think the tour and tasting took a little over an hour total, but I was lingering over the tasting. The tasting room is absolutely gorgeous. I enjoyed my Ports. I opted for the Reserve tasting and tried the Branco, Ruby, and Tawny, enjoying the Tawny the most. I highly recommend Offley as a stop on your Port tour.

Each of them had their own unique character. I was trying to pair each with the proper food in my mind while tasting each. The White would definitely work with either poultry or fish. The Rosé would make a great spritz. The Tawny was our all-around favorite. It would make a great companion to any dish. The Ruby would really work with any meat. The Crusted was really interesting. For some reason, braised short ribs came to my mind. This experience is worth it. Try it out yourself!

We weren't hungry as we just had breakfast at our hotel, but we risked our gluttonous spirits. and went inside the market which eventually led us to this tasting room (Sala de Prova in literal English). We opted to sit at a window table with a very nice view of Porto. Got our 2009 Tawny and Reserve Ruby ports and we (despite being full) added garlic edamame and oysters (€3 each & ouch). Sipped, snacked and snapped happened. What a view. Ticked off port tasting from our to-do list. Quiet pricey, but I guess they do have to pay for the tower that they were located in.

We asked at the information booth, on the main drag in Gaia, where the cellars are that offer a more personal experience and stated that we were willing to travel a bit off the main path. She gave us a brochure (which is in the shape of a wine bottle) for Pocas Junior that had the address and map to the tasting room and cellar. We decided to take a 5 minute ride with Uber that cost 3 Euros, to experience what we hoped was a more personal tour and tasting. This Port house is located on a quiet street and is identified by a large "P" on the building. Once inside, we were met by a personable and professional guide who gave us what turned out to be a private tour. The tour cost 3.5 Euros followed by a tasting of two Port wines. Our guide explained in detail the process for making Port as she walked us through their impressive working facility. She was highly knowledgeable and happily answered our questions. She explained that this Port house is owned and run by a Portuguese family and also clarified the difference between a Port and a Colheita. We were treated with genuine hospitality, instead of simply being part of a large tour group. If you want to experience something unique and special, go to Pocas.

First of all, my wife and I were traveling with our 8 month old daughter which made us a bit nervous about doing a full day tour, however they were beyond accommodating to us even going to the point of offering to help take care of our daughter while at wine tastings, lunch, and even staying with her and watching her in the car when we stopped for a short photo spot. The places we visited for wineries and lunch were very much local hidden gems / family run operations which really made us feel a closer connection with the local culture which we really enjoyed. Our experience with them went way beyond the full day tour which was amazing, they even suggested an amazing spot for dinner that we did the next day, even offering to make us a reservation and arrange for a local taxi to drive us both directions. We had such a great time exploring the smaller family owned/run wineries that we asked for suggestions on other wineries that we could look to visit during our stay. Andreia and Valdemar's true hospitality and passion to help people really came through that they even offered to look into wineries that were open/available, make reservations for us, and Valdemar even offered to pick us up and take us to the wineries. The whole experience with Andreia and Valdemar was way beyond what we ever could have expected from a Douro Valley Wine tour as we came away with such a better appreciation of the culture and 2 friends that we made during our travels.
